I... I want to hit "Quite frankley scarlet, I don't give a damn" even though I like the idea. Just because it's a great quote from a great BOOK. I dunno what to do
What BOOK is it from?

Hello? Eat my tarts? In this cosmic dance of bursting decadence, withheld permissions twist all our arms collectively. But if sweetness can win- and it can- then I'll still be here tomorrow to high five you yesterday my friend. Peace.

When people ask you to have an open mind, they are actually telling you to "stop believing what you believe," and to "start believing what I believe."
History never repeats itself. Events never happen twice.
I knew I wasn't the only person thinking about this. The gates are fine, but they should be able to be placed horizontally as well, it would make for some awesome water-based stuff.

I'm really glad people are into this idea.
As of now, the OP says that they are either blocks or horizontal half blocks aligned to the top of their occupied cube.

Alright guys... it appears we've reached that point with this idea where it seams about as flushed out as we can get it without over doing it. Im going to take some time later on to reorganize the OP, take down the bits of text that ask for opinions, and prepare it for the next stage...Getting Notch's attention!
If anyone has anything to say that hasn't already been mentioned, now's the time =D
With so many people who like this idea, and so many uses already being thought up, i really am starting to believe we can take this all the way ^^
Once im done reorganizing the OP, will all of you be willing to help get this noticed? For those of you who aren't exactly sure how, no worries!~ im going to edit something about it into the OP on what to do and where to go do it =]
I just have to question the "falling sand/gravel hitting the grate and turning into an item and falling through" property:
Under what conditions might this ever be true?
Why, if the player places a grate and then places sand above it.
Whereupon the sand turns into an item and is immediately picked up.
What was the bloody point?
You can never get sand or gravel on top of this block without manually placing the sand or gravel there, making the "harvest" useless.
The only other time would be if you:
Placed the block under a stone block, mined the stone block, let sand sitting on top of the stone fall.
Which makes me think that this was a lot of effort just to avoid suffocating by accident (except that you knew it was coming anyway).

Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable. If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME. Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.

lol, trust me, i understand your reasoning. But the point in sand and gravel turning into item form when falling onto a grate is more of an 'accidental' trait. Its just like with torches, if you place one under a pillar of sand where a block of dirt is holding up the sand, and you dig out the dirt, the sand falls and hits the torch. The sand gets turned into item form, since it obviously can't share the same area with the placed torch.
Torches were never designed for this in mind, it just happens. Just like with how i imagine it happening with grates. I guess i'll need to make that more clear in the OP.
someone else had posted this very same suggestion on Get Satisfaction some 2 months ago... i've gone through and read there post, and im convinced ours is better. Just not to sure how to show that to the moderators there.
I've filed a dispute and i guess we'll find out what happens =/

However, only players being able to shoot through it would kind of be unbalanced. If a player can shoot through it a mob should be able to as well.
But its not THAT overpowered :sad.gif:

For example, without control:

See the difference?
Gold is MEANT to be useless.
Wrong. It's meant for me to look like a pimp.
Easy.

Or,

Though the grates wouldn't be necessary for this type of contraption, they could still be used.
Would it block the water weaken the flow or what?
The way i imagine it.. Grates act like empty space to water. So water would simply do as it normally would as if the grates weren't there.
I'm really hoping this goes all the way to official release! :biggrin.gif:
