What if... Oooh! Oooh! You can make a large grate by doing this:
and a Medium Grate with
You don't craft it, though. You place it. It can let larger amounts of liquid... and hey! What if it had durability that showed above the grate? With sand and lava going through, it depletes it!
ANOTHER IDEA? COME ON!
Yes, I have one more. You right click on it with 1 wool, and it makes string. Right click on it with a stack of 4 string, it makes 1 wool.
It would be cool if say iron grates looked like a solid block when off and clay grates also. That way you could have a trap where someone flips a switch and bam! lava or water drowns them. Otherwise people could look up see the off grates with water or lava and know whats coming.
I also thought this was a good idea because i think that minecraft needs more action blocks. I mean yeah the Lapis lazulli was cool, but it didnt door anything (sure its a dye, but ehh..). the note block was super cool because it does something, and has a more practical use. we need more blocks that arent just for "decoration", but have uses.
First off... im so sorry guys that i haven't been around to post and keep things up to date. Been spending most of my time working =/
But i wont waste anymore time and get right to work here ^^

alright! are you guys ready for this? I 'shopped up some concept art. check it out!
edit: @Nihilias, feel free to use this in your OP if you want! :biggrin.gif:
edit2: re-read the OP, question with redstone: should the "off" state be open, allowing things to pass? were it the other way around (the way its written currently), a grate just sitting on its own would not allow anything through, because without any redstone around, it is in it's "off" state
i had been thinking of doing something like this, but not like how you did it. I think this really does capture the artistic side of using grates =D
And hell yes im gonna use this on the OP after i finish this post!~
As for the On/Off states of the grates when redstone is used:
Im seeing grates being in the On position at all times without redstone... and when redstone is used, it resets itself according to the current charge of the restone wire. I'll make note of this in the OP.

back on topic: yeah, iron and ceramic need differences, but i think the mecanics should be left the same. have only iron is still what i'm in favor of.
so if we have ceramic grates and iron grates, with only the iron grates closeable, that would be 3 new block id's. I do not believe that is bad at all. (i've seen suggestions that would require upwords of 20 to 30 new unique id's...)
on of the good things about this, is another use for clay. not everyone likes bricks (i've only placed 8 excluding pixel art the entire time i've been playing minecraft)
I guess im starting to like the concept of ceramic grates always being open, and not effected my redstone. But that can be something for Notch n' Team to decide i think. I'll make note of it in the OP.

Other uses:
Making a fish tank. 7 spaces of empty space surrounded by glass with an iron grate ceiling with source blocks on it.
ON" the blocks and water flows, since there is water more than 3 deep w/e, you get your aquarium of squids!
OFF' the block if you want calamarie for dinner :biggrin.gif: or w/e ink and giggles n' stuff.
Repeater circuits, makes water fall in unique designs and patterns! (i really gotta go learn how to deal with redstone circuitry. >.<)
also, someone said that redstone would get washed away, this may happen with horizontal flows, but typically, there will be a space you can usethat wont impede flow,
ex.
Horizontal flowing - place up/down
vertical flowing - place to the sides
If your wanting every direction "(just to argue with me?)", then why would you have a block there?
these blocks are not so restricted, just thinking for a few short minutes I thought up a few things that (haven't been mentioned? if it has, credit to you as well :smile.gif: )
so I'm sure fixes* to problems we see can either be smoothed out by ideas from the nice people here. OR applied differently to fix the same problem with the mechanics already suggested.
PS: I don't know if there is a troll here or not, but this has got to be the cleanest/nicest thread I've posted.

Im so glad i have 'logic-tanks' like you, raiu_tree, and RouvenT here supporting this thread. I can have some good ideas at times, but im by no means a smart cookie. I would have never thought of nearly half the possible uses for grates like you guys have. Creative waterfalls with the redstone flood grates... genius! Can you imagine just how pretty you can make things with that idea?!~ *drools a little*

I'll try asking Orion, but i don't think our little drainage grates are grand enough to deserve something like that... i'll try asking though *nods*
Through a bit of research and curiosity I've learned that making blocks that are solid to some things but not others is a bit... well... difficult. That's why water doesn't flow through open doors currently.
One option that I had thought of though is that the block could act like a spring block when in contact with water/lava... when it's not it acts like just another block.
So, when water hits one side of the block, the block stays solid, but water flows from the other sides and bottom... unless there is a block blocking the way.
Cosmetic blocks are great if they are unique. A grate seems like it should have a purpose, though. Wool can be dyed now, so it's actually a great cosmetic material. Sandstone is a great building material. A grate can... be put on the side of a road... I don't make roads, I make walkways. They wouldn't look right with a grate.
Sorry, I can't think of a good reason why this should be added, other than as a cosmetic block. Even then, it's not particularly useful.
you seem to be contradictiting yourself a bit here (well, more than a bit...);
hey, dont worry, there are plenty of people who, like you, lack imagination.
... really "be put on the side of a road"? please tell me you are joking
uuunnnnnnng. i feel like i'm mean, i hate being mean. sorry if i am but its like 3:30 am here...
it'll be a shame if these grates get implemented, radgh. For you it'll just be another useless block upon many others. A real shame =/
sounds pretty cool, the way you presented it especially with that sexy grate bridge gave you my vote.

sounds interesting to be able to shoot through them, but mobs not able to see through them... hmm... but that might just over complicate things a little, and i can only imagine that'll be hell to try and code. I donno, what does everyone else think?
EDIT: Alright, so before i head off to work, i spent some time looking through Get Satisfaction, and for those of you who aren't sure what it is.. Its basically another board that Notch n' Team use to see what we think. So If you guys really do think this is a worth while idea, let them know about it here: http://getsatisfaction.com/mojang/topics/drainage_grates
Just post a reply about what you think, and hopefully if it gets popular enough, they'll notice it :biggrin.gif:
i also need to do a lot of editing on it since its in HTML instead of BBCode... So for the moment, it just a couple images and a link to our thread here :tongue.gif:

I want to see stuff added to Minecraft now!!
Any particular reason? I think it fits nicely with the idea.
I think Nihilias should get Orion-Pyro to make a support icon.

I would love this so much.
Reminds me of Dwarf Fortress.
Minecraft needs more Dwarf Fortressy stuff, I would kill for a drawbridge atom smasher.
