There's a simple solution to being trapped at a range: Dig or build with blocks. Yes, the spearman will have a momentary advantage, but that's okay. The sword is generally superior when it comes to fair melee anyways. If a person's taken the time to arrange the arena appropriately, they should have the advantage.
Sorry, didn't see this when it was first made.
Aaanyway, I suppose that will fix it most of the time, I just know a lot of games where you can't break or place blocks because its a map, and there are other games where the mods are contstantly trying to fix broken traps and situations where people stick another player and then hit them from where they can't retaliate. This just seems to enable that.
Maybe its not actually such a huge issue, I just don't like moving in that direction. Even in Singleplayer, this would let you farm more things from a distance without getting close than a sword could, which just seems like one of those things that are just abusing the system. While farming Iron Golems is cool, it just seems wrong.

My Hunting companion sits on her perch ready to hunt, isnt she cute.
Bella has a special charm to her, I am lucky to have found her and and happen to be upon such perfect circumstance, to even touch such a beautiful, and powerful creature, let alone feed and keep all of my fingers.

And I think for a good many reasons that it should not. Unless you can convince me that it should be that way, with logic oriented towards game mechanics and not feelings or realism, I'm not planning on changing anything.
I fully support this! I've always wanted to have spears/javelins in Minecraft, not to mention that I have an affinity for halberds and polearms. It'd be quite refreshing to have a new weapon for us to wield, and I love your idea of the mechanics and the fighting style, it fits the weapon in question perfectly!
But with a bow, Skullcandy, you have to get the flint and feathers and string as well, plus it takes a little longer to draw back enough. It takes way more materials, enough that no one really uses it for a trap unless its to knock someone in a hole or lava pit from a distance, or they've gotten the bow enchanted with things that make it useful, which requires both experience (and a lot of it, usually), iron for the anvil, and books or more bows so you can get all the enchantments on one bow.
And of course, arrows, enchanted or not, can be completely countered with a shield. Spears are like swords, which last I checked, shields only reduce the damage from them.
And the spears cut through 10% of armor, to boot, which arrows don't do.

Another nice thing I'd like to see is spears being able do deal bonus damage to horses. As in medieval times, they set up spear walls and let enemy horses run into them.
I don't really have a reason to turn this into a game mechanic outside of realism, which is never a good reason.
I'm not even sure how that translates into game mechanics.
Shields already slow the player down. A spear stuck in a shield increases its movement slowing stat, reducing the player's speed further. This makes it so that the player has to remove the shield, sacrificing protection for speed. But also look at the TiCon javelin from earlier versions. It was well implemented, and if we just sacrificed the other metals and modifiers and left it at vanilla materials and enchanting, it'd still be a very good weapon both in melee and ranged combat.
What would the special attack (or full-charge attack, or whatever it's called) be for the spear? Like you know how swords do an area of effect and axes penetrate shields. Idk if anyone has mentioned it yet because I only read the first page and pages 7-8.
Some ideas:
- It could slow or stun the enemy for a brief time, like a half second. This would fit with the spear's playstyle by allowing for more defensive uses. It would also make the spear more useful against single enemies, or in groups, allow for players to make spear formations and defend more effectively by keeping enemies back.
- It could have a chance to dismount a player on a horse. This makes the spear more useful, so like how the axe is an anti-shield weapon, the spear is an anti-horse weapon. Could be useful for jousting as well, with two players on horses trying to knock each other off.
- It could give the spear a critical damage multiplier based on how fast you're going. This would add more risk vs reward to using the spear, since the playstyle encourages being cautious and moving backward, but you could potentially deal more damage by sprinting in and getting a crit. For jousting/horse battles this becomes more useful because of how fast you're going, so if you can time your attacks right, you could do a lot of damage on horseback.
- A combination of ideas 2 and 3, where the chance to dismount increases when you're going fast. This would make spears most effective on horseback.
- It could just give the spear more range, in which case doing a weak (not fully charged) attack with a spear would not have as great of a range. This might be super underpowered however because of the spear's lack of knockback.
- A combination of every single idea here so kids can splash their horses with Speed II and pull 1-shot critical stun kills on other horse riders from 20 blocks away. Jk lmao

Timeless Modding is kinda dead but idk what to put here now
Then why should it not? If you can give me those good reasons as to why, without feelings and speculation.
I believe having a weapon you can launch that deals more damage than a bow, but travails slower and with less range, would be a great addition, due to the fact that the only weapon we currently have that is a projectile is the bow and arrow.
More players will choose it over a bow being that it deals more damage, but with its lack of flight speed and range in comparison to the bow, the Spear Weilder must get closer to the target than he would with a bow, thus increasing the chance of being spotted and taken out.

Because there is no way to balance it that makes it better than a bow in any situation. In this case, you are literally giving up your weapon for a one-time damage use that can more easily be dodged. Anyone with a bow can easily overpower you unless the spear is a one-hit-kill, in which case it's overpowered. There is no place or time in which a bow would not be more useful for the reasons that it has a greater range, faster speed, and most importantly, more than one shot.
Being that a bow is a superior weapon in all situations, there is no reason for the spear to be throwable. To balance it to the bow, it has to be truly equal to the bow and have a different strategy, not be a simply rearrangement of numbers. But in that case, it may as well not be a melee weapon, either. Why? Well, I made this helpful chart demonstrating why a throwable spear can't work no matter what you do. Does this make sense?

While a possible 'special attack' might fit in with the other weapons, I don't think any of these quite work. A stun is annoying in a first-person game, and a bit overpowered. I have a weapon suggestion for horseback that I believe works better. Critical damage based on speed might be a bit too powerful and also doesn't really fit with the style of fighting (might work better for the other weapon suggestion). And given that not-fully-charged attacks reduce your damage to basically nothing, I don't think it needs a range bonus when fully charged.

I still feel it should be throwable.
