What if it increased attack damage instead? It could be like the soup in LoZ: WW, it fills your hearts and increases your attack power until you get hit once.
This is Minecraft, not LoZ. Plus, some people get hit way too often in this game, so that wouldn't really be all that helpful.

Yeah, this is to increase your max health. lol

I am thinking a heart per apple cause it makes the challenge long and hard, but very rewarding, as alot of things are this way in minecraft, also, it takes twice as much food to heal the golden hearts, adding more balance.

I don't think it should wear off, because if you think about it, you need 9 Gold Ingots for 1 Block of Gold, and you need 8 of those, so that makes 72 Ingots, and you also need an Apple, which is only ever found in Dungeon chests very rarely, and Dungeons aren't common either. It'd just be devastating if after all that effort a chance encounter with a Creeper outside your base meant that a large portion of your time has been wasted for no reason whatsoever.
I'd say it should just be, like you said, like Zelda, giving 1 Extra Heart per Golden Apple, and they don't disappear when you die.
5 Diamond Blocks to you, sir, for an excellent Idea that could actually work and keep the gameplay balanced.
It will definitely come in handy if more mobs and torches that don't last forever come into play.

When eating one, can you regain the extra golden health with normal food, so it's like a life container in Zelda, or do you just lose the extra slots? If you lose them, this idea doesn't work at all.
I just found out about an apple tree mod :ohmy.gif: People could use this to get more apples than they need and all they'll have to do is find some gold and voila, 20 hearts!!

Notch could just make apples somewhat more common, the finding of gold makes it a challenge. :biggrin.gif: Some gold for fancy things in your home, and some for increased health.

I like the idea, but the hearts should be permanent. People say "dying is harsh in MC, that's how it should be" - but is it really? Not if you're prepared. Unless you're moving your base, or are on the way back from a massive mining expedition, you're not likely to lose anything close to an entire golden apple when you die. And if you were specifically prepared, with your good stuff in storage, you lose almost nothing. But you can't store your life bar in a chest.
So if golden apples were lost on death, I would never make any. Because playing it safe is fine some of the time, but occasionally I like to leave my diamond tools behind and go for a crazy dash through the nightime / caverns / nether.
I totally support this one, had quite a similar idea a while ago.
I don't think you should lose your extra hearts at any level of difficulty - it would be the PERFECT permanent goal in minecraft - not story-driven in any way, not restrictive in any way, but still rewarding and useful. I think though that one golden apple should only reward half a heart, so that you'd need 20 apples in order to reach your ultimate goal.
I did really like your suggestion, so I made this small animation, showing the health bar of a player who has collected 5 golden hearts so far - should serve to better demonstrate the idea. You can use it if you want.
Nothing in Minecraft is permanent. Anything you gain can be lost. Not having golden hearts lost upon death means that once the player reaches the max all golden apples become useless items. The only way to keep them useful is to eventually have some loss of their effect.
Given that the effect can be lost, golden apples should be made quite a bit cheaper (perhaps ingots instead of blocks.) Consider how many suits of gold armor could be made with the current golden apple recipie. That gold armor would be much more useful than a single extra heart. Even leather armor would be better than that extra heart.

No. The goal of this thread is to make gold apples worth the insane cost, not lower the cost to current power levels.
