Minecraft should back up worlds if you load them with a version earlier than that world was created in. For example, if you load a 1.8 map in 1.7 or 1.6, it would produce a .zip file with the world before loading in it, called [worldname]_[number of backup].
If you've ever loaded a WIP map in an earlier version, or damaged a world by opening it without the right mods enabled, this would help a lot.
I agree, though I don't feel like you explained it particularly well. Maybe phrasing it more like "When/if you enter a world on a version before the world has blocks from, it would automatically create a backup and label it "(Worldname-1._)" This would allow for you to not have to worry about causeing errors/ destruction to the world by opening it up in older versions."
For logistics I see this being a slight issue though, as they would need to actually go back and update older versions, or just have a background program automatically running in the background.

Also take a look at this guide if you are requesting builders for a server/project.
Please note, if I deny a suggestion because it is already possible, then I mean it is already possible withing 10 command blocks (That do not spawn other command blocks) or up to 5 creations (Command blocks that spawn other command blocks) to make your suggestion.
If I critique your suggestion I am not hating on you. Learn the difference.

I'm a pixel artist who makes pixel things and maps! I also do line art occasionally.
I have two work in progress resource packs!
This is the second one!
And of course, by "work-in-progress" I mean "will never, ever be completed".

Tried to phrase it better.
