Lately minecraft has become, well, flooded with livestock that all outclass the noble pig. I am proposing an idea to address this issue:
Every animal has several uses, except for the pig. Cows drop leather, and meat. Chickens drop feathers, eggs, and meat. Sheep drop wool, AND MEAT. rabbits.. so on and so forth, pigs on the other hand are pork chops only. "But you can ride a pig!" yes, and a horse, since saddles are still dungeon and mine shaft only, I'll use it on my donkey (but a crafting recipe would rock for saddles.). I offer this add on for the forgotten pig, foraging. Pigs are well known world wide for their truffle finding ability, so why not add this to minecraft?
How?:
Sheep turn grass to dirt to replenish wool. Lets have pigs turn grass into dirt the same way and pull up say, mushrooms, seeds, coca beans, other treasures.
How often?:
Without prompting, a pig will root around once every 5 minuets or so, but if you feed a pig a mushroom they will go hunt down, the normal finds and even a few nice treasures. The pig will run around for 30seconds and pull up an item every 3 seconds. You can feed a pig a mushroom every 2 minuets after the ability has resolved.
Treasure you say?:
Yes, but don't expect diamonds... ever. some "treasure" examples are things like:
Leather items <50%durability with a slight chance for enchantments
Random saplings.
Apples
Iron items <25% durability with a slight chance for enchantments
Treasure has a bout a 10% chance of dropping while the pig is hunting. Treasure dose not drop passively
Well, if those are treasure, what will normally pop up?:
(listed from most common to least)
wheat seeds
melon/punkin seeds
mushrooms
biome correct sapplings
cocabeans
I offer these ideas to you, the Minecraft community in hopes that we can make a fun, and balanced game that leaves no animal forgotten, and keeps all of it's parts useful.
Honestly as realistic as this would be rotting food is better off being a mod. That being said I like your idea for pigs. Their pork chops should also heal slightly more than beef.
I think that a pig would be able to be fed a mushroom every 2 minutes, it would create particles and dig up a grass/dirt block as you described. I like the pig suggestion, but the food rotting is so-so micromanagement.
For the first... no. I don't want to care about food that much. I don't want to have to have some sort of arbitrary timer or something where it's like "You didn't eat food fast enough! All gone!"
For the second... it's a good idea at first glance, but coarse dirt doesn't turn back. Basically, any time there's a group of pigs in the wild, they'll ruin the landscape for a few things you could easily get elsewhere. You'll end up with an ugly splotched landscape that you'll have to fix slowly and painfully if you want it to look nice. I suggest you rethink this, since it looks like it could be very good, but for this problem.
I will have to completely disagree about food degradation. It's already slight challenge and tedious work to obtain and cook to fill up your hunger. And with our current Hunger system, it's a chance we shouldn't take.
But as for Pigs, that is something I would definitely like to see, it would allow better ease to collect mushrooms, cocoa beans, and possibly (not so useful) treasure.
I like the idea, but make the pigs either not find golden apples, or make them only forage with mushrooms. You can breed pigs super easy, and if you have lots of pigs, you'll find alot of apples.
Even if a golden apple is a 1/1000 chance, with 100 pigs finding ten items every 5 minutes? That's statistically equivalent to one gold apple every 5 minutes. Even if you lower the chance, people will abuse the heck out of it. People could just make massive pens of pigs that have hopper minecarts under them, and the person that does that will be rolling in golden apples.
You could at least make it non automatic. Make it so that the player at least has to feed the pigs to make it forage for things. That way its a bit more of an activity and not just passive collecting.
So either get rid of the golden apples, or get rid of the random foraging. Its really unbalanced at this point currently.
Might consider supporting if this issue is addressed.

golden apples removed, that was one of the points we where iffy on too. Also clarified that treasure drops happen only when given a mushroom to hunt.

Edit: Food Rot has been dropped and removed.

Half support.

Yeah, looking at it now, I agree and have edited the idea, It's group thought and team work like this that makes minecraft great.
No support, this doesn't fit into Minecraft. This belongs in survival games, not Minecraft.

Partial support.
So the world hates food rot, in single player I can see why. So the thread had been fixed to remove Food Rot
Sorry, but no.

Ok, then support. Good way to get seeds and crops and things in superflat.
support! nice idea, i thought pigs were useless too.
I'm back from my hibernation. Most likely gone so don't pm me.
Anything to see pigs being awesome. SUPPORT!
My sig got screwed up because of a forum glitch and I'm too lazy to go find the banners to fix it.
