Think of it.
It's night time, a usually ten minute long period. But oh, you're being lazy and don't want to wait for daytime. And there are icky monsters out there! Why combat them when you can just go lay down in a fluffy little bed, close your eyes, and wake up in twenty seconds with the zombies and skeletons all burned up?
It defeats the purpose of those guys in the first place.
Second:
You're in a cavern pretty far from your base, deep underground. You don't have a watch or a compass, so you can't tell which way to go / what time it is. Slowly but surely, your sleep bar drops. Suddenly... BAM. You're out cold because you didn't manage to get out in time. Sure enough, a couple creepers decide to play their favorite game involving blowing you up while you're asleep and can't run away. Poo, you just lost all the diamond you mined.. and since you hadn't exactly expected on staying so long, you didn't bother to have backups. Damn.
Third:
It'd waste time you could use for stuff. I always use night time to craft things. Like glass. And I check on my crops at night. So. Yeah.
Fourth:
No. Sleeping should only be used if there is to be an anti-nether place to go to. :<
1st: Maybe make them disappear and not burn up? And when you wake up, theres sheeps and evil chickens waiting outside...
2nd: When you know your about to fall asleep, why don't you build a shelter atleast?
3rd: Sleeping will only minimum involve 10 seconds if you want to fully deplet the sleeping bar, if you don't you can wake up after 5 sec and craft ur stuff...
4th: Ok... I agree with the place to travel, but not with the "No":)
This is starting to get me all depressed.... If you guys will just LOOK at my post on sleeping you will see that I pretty much covered all of these issues. ALL of them. http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=152797 I think sleeping can be added to the game in a way so everyone is be happy. Being tired should have a negative impact. And players should sleep. Though sleeping should not put you in harms way. Read the WHOLE post and you will understand.
If you're deep underground and your pick just broke and all you have is your bare hands, wouldn't exactly be easy to make a shelter from gravel and stone you can't pick up. :/
Now your'e just making a wierdos scenario, I belive noone enters a mine with no pickaxe at all or any resources, and if the pickaxe gets broken you will get resources, atleast some... and you know that you need to make a shelter and sleep when the bar gets empty...
I like the Idea in the "regeneration" way that you get health for sleeping.. but having a "sleep-o-meter" would make it teadious you are mostley a looooooooing way down in the mine and well what if you are encountering monsters and the meter says "sorry sleepy time" it woud make me a bit..sad. but the regeneration idea is brilliant.

/ my mind is never be quiet.. And peapole wonder why im wierd.
I like the idea of sleeping, but the way you're taking it, it demands too much attention from the player.
In the first place, i don't think that we should be able too sleep just anywhere, it's just too easy to make a 2 block high hole, close it up and wait 10 sec until you get a full life bar. It would be unbalanced.
In order to limit the player on sleeping i think we should only be able to do it on beds, and make the bed somehow unique (proportional to the number of bases). For example, pillows (a part of the recipe), would be found only in dungeons. As frequent as saddles.
I think we can find a better solution than this one, but for now it fulfils my objective: The more the player explores, the more they get to build bases or outposts. And sleep on them.
To avoid the "cheating" of people carrying their beds with them, i agree with the placeable bed that don't return the materials when destroyed.
Even though, getting a full life bar this way is just too easy. it would be better if we just got one heart over a night of sleep. This way, the payer would get a full life bar over a minecraft week of resting and the farming and cooking wouldn't loose it's value since sleeping in the middle of an adventure is not possible.
Once someone slept a whole night it should not be possible to fall asleep for the next day, so that people do't sleep over and over again until they have a full life bar.
About the sleeping, i would prefer if there was a fade to black and fade from black.
And it would be really cool if there was a 1% chance of getting into a dream world. Every time would just get boring.
The only problem i see is in multi player. The time cannot go faster for the other players just because one is trying to sleep. And sleep in real time is just stupid.
If anyone finds a solution to this, i don't see why sleeping should not make it to the game.
But is a problem hard to overcome...
Making the sleep last for 10 seconds with the minecraft time on the same rhythm would make sleep almost useless since one of it's main purposes, i think, is to give the player a way of avoiding boring moments of waiting for the sun to come up, or the furnace to end smelting.
1st: Please read the whole post before replying... I know you haven't read closely because it says that you regenerate hearts faster the softer you sleep, meaning that when you sleep on stone, it will actually take 40 seconds to heal half a heart, but the sleep bar goes down as fast as always...
2nd: Pillows would be nice :smile.gif: And sleeping everywhere isn't safe, so why do you disagree? Sleep only gives advantage when sleeping on wool or in a bed(bed is best).
3rd: That sounds nice, but I don't see the problem... When you cheat in a sandbox game, it's more like you don't cheat, you do stuff because you have set the rules for it...
4th:Understand what you say, it will take 40 seconds to fill up the hearts completely(It is mentioned in the OP!).
5th: Maybe, but 1% is very little: Lets say you want to go to the dream world for the first time, and you try to sleep over and over again, no dream? And as mentioned in the OP you can quit your dream whenever you want to...
6th: Sleeping in multiplayer is allready mentioned in the OP!

Well, why do you want to encounter monsters when you know you need to sleep, you get used to the sleep bar just like the hearts bar and oxygen(underwater) bar...
And as mentioned in some replies over, make a shelter when you know it is time to sleep...
And thanks for replying, you got me thinking of caffeine and other stuff keeping you awake for some hours more :smile.gif:
My suggestin is that A)we should be able to shut this off.
:cool.gif: Mayby near the end of your sleep bar you should start halusinating. Peacful mobs atacking you. bad mobs spawning in the day. Randume dirt and rock blocks turning into gold and dimond(Turning back when they git into your invintory) Water and lava become lava and water.

My solution to you: READ BEFORE POSTING!
Gahh, so tired of players not reading closely -.-
