So, this is rather simple, but I think that Gunpowder should be usable as a really fast fuel source; instead of the speed of a normal coal, it should be almost quadruple that. However, one gunpowder would only smelt two items, and here's where the danger comes in; it has a chance of exploding each time a gunpowder is used.
This chance wouldn't be huge, and neither would the explosion, but you would lose any items in the furnace, as well as the furnace itself and maybe a couple of blocks around it if it exploded. It would be smaller than any explosion already implemented.
This would be a risky thing but useful if you need something really fast. My main reason for this is personal experience; I often have trouble waiting for things to smelt (due to my ADHD and need for everything to happen immediately), and I have tons of potatoes and other modded items that need to be cooked so that I don't starve. While waiting for them isn't THAT tedious, I personally feel as if a more exciting smelting might be useful. Worst case scenario, I lose a stack of potatoes because I was reckless with gunpowder. I also don't think that this is Overpowered because of the chance of losing your stuff and the rarity of gunpowder.
Anybody else think this is a good idea? Anyone have any suggestions to add?

This would be a pretty neat idea to implement into the game, giving gunpowder a unique use. One way of solving the slowness of a burning furnace would be to craft better furnaces with materials such as gold, iron, diamond, ect.

Yes, but I'd rather stick to just the gunpowder idea. Throwing new furnaces into the game means more to code, and while I like the idea of perhaps a Reinforced Furnace so that it doesn't explode (iron around a Furnace) and maybe increases efficiency (by 50%, so coal smelts 12 items, gunpowder smelts 3, etc), I don't think other new furnaces are realistic or Minecraft-y. That's just my input though. I may add some of this to the main post tomorrow.

An issue with this idea is how easy it is for gunpowder to be obtained. A single creeper can drop 0-2 gunpowder, and even more if the player is using a sword with looting. Additionally it is possible to make large mob farms which yield a lot of gunpowder in hours. A player could make coal completely irrelevant by setting up some of the most basic of these farms. While having a lower burn time, I don't feel like that is enough to make this feature balanced with the rest of the game.

Except that it could explode, and you lose your items that you were smelting. I would still use coal for anything valuable like iron ore; I just want this to be smelting mundane items such as getting smooth stone or baked potatoes.

Wait... WHAT??? Then why would I use this if it could destroy whatever is in the furnace? Sorry, but I don't think that's a good way to balance it out. It's way too underpowered, as coal is way easier to get, smelts 4x more items, doesn't randomly explode, and therefore makes this alternative fuel useless. So, if anything, this should smelt more than coal to be a good add.

And coal can be found in big veins practically anywhere, while looting is a pretty rare enchant, such complex farms require large amounts of effort and time to build, even in creative. You also don't need to remember this special technique to kill creepers without blowing your crap up, or for witches to not kill you with their OP potions, nor would it require you your bow and arrows, but just you, your pickaxe, and a bit of time looking around in caves and stuff, and find way more coal in less than an hour. You can also renew coal by making charcoal with a lot of wood around out faster and more easily.

I can't imagine for the life of me why anyone would use this. I don't care how fast this smelts, I don't want any of my furnaces emulating a Creeper. Even though the explosion is small, I still wouldn't to lose any good items I'm trying to smelt. It's just not worth it. If furnaces work too slow for you, then just find something else to do in the meantime or use more furnaces.

While I agree that this feature could be abused, you could accomplish the same thing you are talking about with a blaze farm, though it functions at normal speed. Blaze rods act as fuel for 12 items, making (char)coal irrelevant. Additionally, you could create a Wither Skeleton farm for coal, and an automatic wood farm hooked up to a smelting device, though these require more resources than you'd have earlier in the game. Plus, I doubt too many people would want to risk blowing up stuff just to get things 4x faster.
Edit: But, if people REALLY need a way to smelt mundane stuff fast, use a super-furnace.
Just a question to anyone suporring this....have you ever touched gunpowder with a match? If you put that in a confined area.....BOOM!
The rate of cunsumption is too high and the flashpoint so low that it would not smelt anything. Put gunpowder under a piece of cardboard...which is made of paper btw...light the powder and all you get is dirty fingers when you pick it up to look at it after the flash of pretty lights.
Being that gunpowder in a confined area guarantees an explosion do to the gases it produces, combined with the lack of sufficiant heat to melt enough lead to make a BB(much less a ingot of iron), i must say:
Although it's a sort of useful item to increase the rate of how fast a furnace would usually melt, it would make using it a risk due to the furnace's ability to explode. This would make Players rather hesitant to use Gunpowder and loose their smelted items, whether a small chance or not. At one point you could be cooking some Raw Beef or smelting Iron, only to eventually find that your Furnace has exploded and has destroyed your precious items. It's effective, but too risky.

You do have a point… Basically, gunpowder would just explode if you shoved it in a furnace and set it on fire; Where has logic gone? This stuff comes from explodey-destroying creepers and is used to make the classic tool of destruction, TNT. I would NOT put that in my furnace. This is not a realism game, but this is basic logic; Set explosives on fire, they go boom.

Gunpowder itself does not explode, but it burns at an accelerated rate.

As gunpowder is a lot harder to obtain than coal and is also more effective, and is proven to not explode as plain gunpowder itself, I suggest you remove the explosion thing and make it smelt a bit more than coal.

24 wood planks burns at the same rate of coal, but not as efficient.
So with that said, coal is useless as fuel because lava is more abundant then it (in the nether, I don't count charcoal either and farming WS is out of the question) and burns longer, and wood is easier to obtain.
To solve the issue about the USE of it compared to coal, wood, or lava: XP perhaps using gunpowder doesn't speed up the process, but has a random chance of BURSTING with flame destroying the items in the furnace, but not anything around it. The only advantage would be that you earn DOUBLE the XP when you risk losing it.

The issue with this is that I imagined it exploding due to pressure. When that quickly burning fuel builds up pressure, BOOM. It would still explode.
I personally think that increasing the burn time would be logical, but it would only be not overpowered if it had a setback. Personally, I would say that the chance should increase the longer you use it as fuel; first time a gunpowder is used 0%, second time 2%, etc.
This chance could decrease over time, like an overheat chance.

Yeah minecraft gun-powder is linked to typically all explosions in the game, other then the ender-dragon/wither's death animation. It's relative enough to include an explosive attribute to whatever it does.

But at least those things make sense balance-wise. It's not a sensible idea for a furnace to randomly explode while you are smelting valuables. Also, a bucket of lava would definitely induce far more heat pressure, but for some reason, the furnace doesn't explode with the lava in the furnace, releasing the lava to destroy anything in its path. I wonder why...

yes it does not explode when it is in open air but in a tight closed space such as a shotgun shell or a furnace it will explode because it will not have access to the air it need to become a fire. as for the idea, it would be a good idea but it just does not seem right, everything in the game even remotely linked to gunpowder explodes 100% of the time so using it to smelt does not seem very safe
