A weapon that I would very much like to see being added to the game is a lance. This would add the ability to have jousting competitions in Minecraft which would be a fun game to play with friends or even minigames on servers. Also they could be useful weapons to wield on horseback. My vision of a lance would be around 3 times the length of a sword (seeing as that's an average comparison for real life swords and lances). It would be cool if they were swung in a stabbing motion when used.
Lances would come in all the tiers that swords and tools would. The wooden lance would have a very low durability and would break instantly upon hitting another players shield (which I'll get into later). The purpose of these wooden ones would mainly be for sport jousting. In real jousting the object is to either break your lance over your opponents shield or knock them off their horse so having the wooden ones break would be true to real jousting. It would be cool if the lance had a 30%-40% chance of knocking a player off of their horse for the sake of jousting but I don't know if that is possible or not.
The other tiers of lances would do the same amount of damage as a sword of the same tier but only when the lance is wielded on a horse. When carried without a horse it will do two hearts less of damage. The benefits of lances are their additional range as opposed to a sword.
A crafting recipe for the lance could look like this
Shields would also be a nice addition. They could play a role in the jousting I mentioned earlier as well as regular combat. Of course these would also come in every tier that armour comes in. Shields will gain their own slot in the character inventory. When equipped, the shield will show up on the left arm. It can be used by right clicking, much like when you right click now with a sword and you hold it sideways and sneak. Either that or it could be activated when you sneak (by pressing shift).
Shields will block all damage taken but will lose durability quicker. Also, when you right click to use the shield it will reduce the speed of your movement and turning speed. These two features should be added in order to ensure people don't just sit around in a fight with their shield up. I don't know if it is possible or not but if there was a way to make it so that when a sword hits the shield, all the damage is blocked but when it hits a part that is not covered by the shield it harms the player. If the shield right clicking to put the shield in a blocking position regular damage will be taken. Also attacks can't be made by a played if they are in blocking position. When in blocking position, you will still get knocked back, but there could be a reduction to the amount. Maybe 50% of the knockback will be absorbed.
When the shield in its blocking position it should cover the bottom half of the screen to reduce vision in order to make the use of the shield a little more fair.
When arrows are fired at a shield, there should be a small chance that arrows will go through them. Starting with a leather shield maybe a 1/4 chance, gold with a 1/8 chance, iron with a 1/16 chance and diamond with a 1/32 chance.
New enchantments could be made for the shield. It can still get the ones that are used for armours but maybe add some shield specific ones such as one that will further reduce the amount of knockback you get after being hit in blocking position. Maybe one that allows you to perform a shield bash while blocking.
A crafting recipe for a shield could look like this
(Leather shields will be a single wooden block surrounded in the same pattern by leather in order to make it more realistic. This would make it similar to a Viking's shield)
Finally, this is optional, but it would be super awesome if you could use the same system for dying banners and use that on shields. That way you could add a crest to your shields. Completely optional but that would be awesome.
Tell me what you think. And if anyone has anything negative to say or any problems with this idea they better also have a way to solve said problem. Constructive criticism is much better then just telling someone they are wrong.

If you want range, why not use a bow? They do way more damage than your lances, and have some pretty awesome enchantments.

When the shield in its blocking position it should cover the bottom half of the screen to reduce vision in order to make the use of the shield a little more fair. Or, use a sword block which barely obstructs your vision.

Anyway, this shield may not be great, but a sword blocking enchantment might be pretty cool.

Instead of simply knocking off/dismounting a player from a horse on a successful lance strike, the player knocked off should enter a special fall animation and land flat on the ground stunned for a period of time. This would make the lance especially useful against other mounted players over a simple sword.
Also lance damage should greatly factor in the current speed of the horse. It would be silly to just slowly trot around standing players and poke them with the lance.
I like the concept, I don't like the execution. I don't blame you though most people have not had experience with horses or shields in combat but it truly bothers me when combat suggestions come up and claim "realism".
Firstly, lances for tournaments do break I agree. There are also chances to be dismounted. However, the lances made for combat are essentially very long and powerful spears. The war lances (made for actual combat) SHOULD NOT break easily and should be very damaging. The lances made for jousting less damaging and more decorative. The horses should also have a chance to knock down infantry dependent upon their velocity and the player's velocity. Ex: Horse velocity = 15 player velocity = 5 player gets knocked over and horse slows down. If horse velocity = 5 and player velocity = 0 though the player should just get the knockback effect. EDIT: The lances themselves should also give a knockback or nausea effect if you're slammed hard enough(having been hit by polearms they generate quite a bit of force).
Secondly, shields are both offensive and defensive and if you don't block and attack at the same time you're a dead man. While it makes sense in terms of game mechanics that you can only attack or defend...with a shield (specifically round shields i.e. viking shields) are used to cover a specific area of the body while still leaving the sword open to do its work. I understand that this is Minecraft but it is possible to make a mechanic to block and attack at the same time and still be fair. I do appreciate the shield breakage although I think the quality of the shield(maybe you can make the shield better by putting more materials on it, for example start off with a wooden board and work your way up to a shield with diamond rim and boss) should play a much larger role in its durability.
To counteract the advantage of attacking and blocking at the same time, the shield should only protect a certain area; where you're holding it. Then if someone attacks you must aim the shield at the attack. It would require a fair bit of multi-tasking on the part of shield user to both block and attack in that same instant. If that is not enough the shield should also take up more hunger as it is used than a single weapon (or two-handed weapon? ^^).
TLDR;
Tournament lance - Made for sport, flashy, and doesn't do a ton of damage along with shattering on impact.
War lance - Damaging, powerful, brutally effective. Knockback on hits.
Shield advantage - Covers an area of the body vs arrows. Covers the same area in melee.
Can both be blocking and attacking at the same time. Can be used for offense.
Shield disadvantage - Uses up hunger. Requires multi-tasking on part of the user to both attack and block in the same instant. Gets knockback effect vs heavier weapons.

This would be great to add in the game! Support

This actually looks really cool, and it allows for some medieval roleplays to be more realistic. Support!

Support, great idea. I'm glad you aren't suggesting the usual suggestion with combat ideas.

I don't really understand the support.
Why use a lance or a shield when you can have a sword that does both?
You can still joust with a sword.

OK, why is there all this mindless support?
Nobody is even explaining?

I support! Gives horse combat a purpose, and a new, balanced weapon to boot!
My sig got screwed up because of a forum glitch and I'm too lazy to go find the banners to fix it.
