Congratulations to you, my good OP, for blowing my mind. This idea is fantastic (and well thought out :biggrin.gif:)
What would the use of a pet squid be, by the way? No offense to the previous suggestion of it dropping ink sacs, but that would be kind of like a pet pig dropping pork. I would think a pet squid might serve as a sort of submergible boat (a submarine, I guess) but the oxygen bar would get in the way...and if that was removed, it would just get plain silly (invincible underwater cruise ship, anyone?). Any thoughts?

Ask me about giant, Canadian, zombie-steampunk tyrannosaurus rexes.
I own one, and her name is Cuddlemuffins.

Awesomeness... duh... who wouldn't want a big squid tank in their house?
Another Idea: Creepers don't attack people you choose, for example you want your friend to come in but you don't want him and your pet to blow up when you introduce them to each other. Other than that, this is perfect.
you my friend (i call everyone friend i dont know) you have the most logical, functional and fun sounding pet mod i have heard. Only It would be fun to have spider saddle to ride a spider that climbs walls. Happy fun time. U get 5

thats a very nice everything you've got there, let me fix it [SSSS]
*You can pickup your pets.
*Pets are stationary.
*Pets cannot do anything special except be slaughtered or reproduce.
*Pets are only cows, pigs, and chickens.
Hopefully, no more stupid topics on "Pets" which can attack and gather diamond for you.
If you want to post a suggestion, make sure it would enhance gameplay, not make it easy.
1.Picking up pets as an inventory item? That's. . .really stupid. . .
2.NO stationary pets,
3.NU WAI!
4.I want a pet sheep.
(He never said they would gather diamond for your character, you idiot, give a valid reason why this is a bad idea)
This is pretty amazing. I've been hoping for a way to domesticate animals other than dogs, and this is really well-thought-out and balanced. Kudos to you, sir.
I was about to suggest the leash too =p. But still, amazing suggestion. This would be an instant download for me, if it was on the mod page. I've been working on modding for a while now, nothing too serious, but I may just be into making something like this if it's not being made already.

"We're kept alive, by artificial means. But have lost our souls, to a world of machines." Unnatural Selection, Ayreon.
It's the current design intent to make passive animals more persistent.
If they are more persistent, they will not respawn anywhere near as often as they currently do.
Thus, there will have to be a method for players to collect them and herd them around.
This suggestion could help a great deal in devising that method.
I'd suggest to the OP to review the suggestion and, with the above in mind, possibly revise it.
The concept of persistent mobs that can be herded is one that modders should already be working on, given that 1. we know it's coming to the game and 2. hasn't actually been tackled by the developers yet.
It's possible that this could become a significant community contribution.
Wow, didn't even see some of the replies until just now! Thanks guys!
It's nice to hear that in 1.8 or 1.9, animals will be rarer and able to be domesticated. Even if it's not as complex as this (which I always doubted a system like this would be) it'll still scratch that farming/companion animal itch that I was going for.
The various types of collars and animal foods seem a little complicated, and I'm not sold on the idea of taming monsters. But I like the idea of preventing specific animals from despawning.
What about this simpler variation...
If you build a fence around an animal, it won't despawn. Then, after three game days of captivity, the animal becomes officially tame. At this point you can put a name tage on the animal and it will never despawn, even if you remove the fence.

I wonder if Notch actually looks at these things.

By the way, I love your tag idea and tag recipe!
