(I originally posted this idea in the Small Suggestions thread and it got a lot of support, so here's the thread. Thanks guys <3.)
My idea is simple, Farmers should have random saplings available for trading. It's a small, yet crucial addition. For the PC version, it'd be a nice way for starting players to get trees from biomes they haven't explored yet. For the console version, it would be the only way to get new trees in old worlds. My world was made quite a while back, but I eventually found a way to obtain everything that's newly added. When dark oak and acacia trees will be added, I currently don't see a way to obtain them in my old world. If saplings are added for trading, it would be our solution.
Since saplings are a bit more important than simple crops, I'd think they'd be a tier 4 trade. (I think farmers lack a tier 4 trade anyway) Farmer trades are cheap, so it shouldn't be more than 2-3 emeralds to trade. Simple right? Any suggestions or criticisms?
The only problem is that this would ruin flatworld survival. But I suppose the player could just not trade for saplings, or maybe if it takes enough emeralds, it would make sense because that is late/end game.
Hm. I don't support because I hate it, because it's a pretty good idea, but I don't support because, minecraft is losing its "adventure" part. For example, Moss stone, was once found only in dungeons, but now you can craft it very easily. Before having mossy cobble was like, "DUNGEON! Chest! Spawner! Mossy cobble YEAH!" now it's more like: "Hey look a dungeon... Chest... Spawner... And cobble.". If all items could get obtained that easily, it'd lose the fun. But maybe they could sell the sapplings of their own biomes, or somehow detect if they have a jungle besides their biome -for example- and sell that. But really, if you REALLY want that amaizing dark oak tree in your house, or a Beautiful Acacia tree besides your artificial pool, Go look for it!
No idea why the people above care about flatworld survival and I think having it as a tier 4 trade means that you won't have to go so far out for saplings. Sometimes you will need to go over 20k blocks to find each tree.
I was one of the following people who supported your suggestion in the Small Suggestions thread. It's a small idea with a rather balanced and clever use. Also allow it possible for Villagers to trade with saplings to players.
