Right now there are only two ways for trees to appear in-game.
Part of original world generation.
Planted by the player.
The problem here is that if you go through and cut down an entire forest you have to manually replant it. I think that a good addition to the game would be auto regrowing forests. I have thought of a few ways to do this.
When a sapling falls from a tree and it is not picked up there is a chance it will be "planted" automatically and grow.
When leaves decay they have a chance of planting a sapling below them. -this i think is the best choice-
Somehow the game remembers where a tree once was and has a chance of growing a new one.
This would allow us to cut down trees without worrying as much about replanting. It would also make the game slightly more realistic.

[quote]On one hand I would like this as it would be convenient when mass harvesting forests. On the other hand, replanting even a huge forest takes like 30 seconds to a minute, and if people were just trying to clear a forest to build this would be an inconvenience.
This is a good point... any ideas on how to solve this issue.
Update 2:
Quote from mariofishnextthis is a really good idea, oh i have something to add to this: trees can have stages so it would start a small tree then get bigger and bigger.SO
So you are looking for a stage (or multiple stages) between saplings and actual trees? That is a great idea. -Adding this to main thread-
Maybe you could add a NBT to grass / dirt. It represents a boolean stating something like: hasTreeSappling. If your remove the grass / dirt for like a... House. It will also remove the chance of growing a tree. Which could solve the problem. (And if you re-add grass / dirt. The boolean will be false. Which means a tree wont grow on it unless you plant one)
also a really good idea. -adding it to main thread-

you should make it that if you want to clear the forest you have to put a block under the trees log and then you can remove it and place dirt and no tree will gorw
The suggestion isn't horrible, but I think tree planting should be a completely player-oriented job with no automation behind it. I say that for two reasons:
1.) The game gives you more trees than you will ever need. No need to overspoil players with more automatically growing trees.
2.) What if I want to quickly clear out a forest and then leave and do something else? Then I could come back to automatic-planting of saplings and trees grow where I might not want them to.
The first question in your poll should be reworked. Having nothing but numbers for a "Do you want this to be added?" question is... strange.

I am almost on the fence, but after playing on a server with TreeAssist it was nice. I might go along with a planted sapling spawns where the previous tree grew IF the first / ground level log is cut first. That would give an option for folks who want to clear cut with no re growth, but still streamline the cut, but it'll grow back process.
Otherwise I am accepting of the fact that it's just the added action of needing to replant trees if you want them to grow back aspect of the game, and just continue to deal with it.

not sure i understand this. do you think you could re-word your idea?

When you approach a tree and cut the log touching the ground/dirt first, then a sapling is planted on that spot. If any other log of the tree is cut first, a sapling will not be planted where the tree was.
I don't see how automatically planted saplings is sort of faster than manually planting them. I've cut down nearly a large area of forests and never had trouble or spent a long time re-planting trees, it's quite easy, really.
At first glance, I think I like the idea of saplings that drop having a small chance of planting themselves after a while. Like, when the time comes for it to naturally despawn, there is like a 5% chance it will plant instead, if able.
None of it overly excites me, however. As said, we have more trees than we need. I can understand wanting to re-forest an area for aesthetic purposes, so perhaps some way to mass plant an area with saplings instead?

i know realism is not the point of the game but i think a natural regrowing system is much nicer than some kind of mass planter type thing

and at one point I had cleared three small forest biomes and the land had just been decimated and everything looked ugly and
just torn up because I also use buildcraft and I quarried the land after cutting down the forests.
I am the appitamy of a deforester and i'm proud.
After too many forests you would have to move on to new forests and I would have to get up in the morning in minecraft,
travel 300 blocks, Cut down a few trees and go back to my base of operations to simply store the few blocks I got before I had
to go home.
And I was too lazy to plant more saplings I just burned them so I had a place for the quarries.
This would make the grind easier for me.

When leaves decay now, they can drop saplings so if they should take root, that is basically same as 1.
I would definitely not like 3. because if I clear an area on purpose, I certainly don't want it to revert to a forest.

mainly just different ways of approaching the creation of such a mechanic. also it would have slight effects on the players one way or another...
