If you have played minecraft for a while like I have, you should remember the Alpha version. This was between Infdev to Beta.
In the later versions of Alpha, we were introduced armor. With the armor, you got a meter on your HUD. This meter indicated how much durability you have left on your armor. When Beta came out, that feature was changed and now it is based on how high of a level your armor is.
I would like to have an option in the settings that allows you to toggle between how high of a level your armor is, to how much durability is left on your armor. I feel like the durability was a better use of the hud space because it is pretty obvious which armor tiers are better than the others.
To make this better for new players, the default armor bar will be the one we have now. When a player is new to the game, they can learn and memorize the armor tiers and then switch to durability if they want to!
On one hand, like Endercreeper168 I think it's pretty simple to just hit E and glance to the left of my character. On the other hand, I don't think it's necessary to have the armor bar always visible at all... why is it even there? Stick it in the inventory and make the armor bar show up for a few seconds whenever it changes (i.e. whenever I equip/unequip armor or if a piece breaks). Probably more effort than it's worth, though.
No support because honestly it's not worth the effort on Mojang's part to code this when we can take a second or two to check manually.
Don't forget that back in Beta, the armor bar not only indicated durability but also indicated protection like it does now. It was a completely different system back then.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
I would like it if I was notified if my armor broke, I never pay enough attention to the armor bar, I fill it up, and don't even noticed it changed when it did.
So... Something close to this... Partial support, I guess...
