Well, I have been playing some Warcraft lately and I started to think about Gyrocopters. After doing some research on wikipedia, I think they would be a nice addition to MC.
As you can see, it is a very simple and light vehicle. In MC, it shouldn't go too high (I don't know, maybe about 7-8 blocks above the ground at the highest height possible. This way it would be able to climb mountains, hills etc., however it would still be in range of the skeletons arrows.)
How to craft one: (Use your imagination, I am sure you can see it. Look at a RL one and compare) <---Rotor <---Propeller []
KEY: = Wheels = Pilot seat
But it FLIES! It doesn't match the theme of my Minecraft!
Well, if you have looked at the pictures of Gyrocopters IRL, you can see they are extremely simple (in fact, there are only 3 primary flight controls. I have never piloted one, but it doesn't sound that hard). So I don't see the problem with it.
But there are no ways to counter it!
Well, as I have said earlier, it is extremely light. So it shouldn't take a lot of arrows to take it down (maybe 4 or 5). Also, I think it is very likely Notch adds some kind of flying mob.
What about the fuel? As you can see, it uses a furnace as the engine (at least in this prototype). So it would use currently available power sources, such as coal or wood. Also, on the pilot's seat should be a "fuel bar", which displays how longer you can keep flying until you have to refuel it.
Fine, but it would go, like, thunder-fast, right?
Nope, not really. Maybe it could give you a 1.5x or a 2x speed boost. The Gyrocopter would be quite similar to the boat: gets you to place faster, but it quite fragile. But it flies
So, what do you think? With these characteristics, I don't think it would be OP and just imagine flying around your map, looking at the sun going down and laughing at the night mobs appearing down there, until you run out of fuel, crash and a creeper comes to you to check if you are alright.

i thnk its nice idea.i think though that it should have some form of defence though, maybe you'se arrows as ammo for a little cannon like thing?(i thnk it would be unfair to just be flying, and have a group of skeles take you down no contest.)

Yes, I thought about this too, but the idea of a flying vehicle, simple like this, already doesn't please a lot of people. If this thread lives (and hopefully it will), I will see if more people suggest this, If yes, I'll add it to the main post.
sorry, but I dont think it is a very good idea... there is electricity, ok, but further it is a game with not very much technology tools in it, it's about mining, crafting and building.... So I don't think this is a good part for the game...
p.s. sorry for my bad English... :smile.gif:
I have to disagree. You wouldn't be forced to use this, only the ones who like it would use it. You can keep MC Vanilla if you want to, but you are being extremely close minded.
The game is about a man that uses the resources of the world around him so he can make his life better. So why would he have to be stuck in the Middle Age? I am not saying that we should be able to go to Space, of course there is a limit. However, the Gyrocopter and the concept of flying machines is so simple that Da Vinci designed a helicopter in 1493.
Good idea, but how big would it be 1 or 2 blocks? Also how do you make the wheels?
I am not sure yet. This is just an idea, so I want to see if people like it. I'd say at least, but most likely, 2 blocks big. About the wheels, I am also not sure. Other elements would have to be implemented to make them, I think.
BTW I made this thinking about a 3x3 crafting grid. It would look much better if the crafting grid was expanded.
EDIT: About the wheels, I just had this idea: Hevea brasiliensis. What the hell is this? Well, there is a wikipedia article about it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hevea_brasiliensis), but long story short, latex is extracted from these trees.
Notch has recently added 2 new tree types, so I am sure he could add another one, but with more uses than just getting wood.
What is a Gyrocopter IRL?

This isn't too far ahead. Also, I am not saying this should be implemented ASAP, I just think this could be a nice future addition.
