While watching a stream, I noticed that the streamer was getting really unlucky enchants on his gear. Stuff like Blast Protection IV (which you don't really need if you know how to fight creepers, ghasts etc.) and weak tool enchants.
That started me thinking, what if there was a system in place that allowed players to 'roll' for enchants, but here's the catch, you have to 'pay' for these rolls with an item, such as diamonds, lapis etc., or even things like ghast tears, etc.
I feel as though this could work, as these items are fairly rare and it would mean that players could get the enchants they need/want, but without making it too easy.
As I was typing, another idea popped into my head, but this one is more far-fetched. Say for example you think your enchanting table is cursed because you're getting crappy enchants, how about taking it to the local village wizard to get it reset? For example, you want an enchanted diamond pickaxe with Efficiency III as the main enchant, but you're getting silk touch, which you don't want. We all know that enchant's going to be there until you eventually give in and take it, but how about going to the village wizard and paying emeralds so he can reset (basically randomising the enchants you get, meaning you'll get new ones) so you have a better chance at getting the enchant you want.
I think these would add more to the game, as lapis is fairly rare and it adds yet another use for it, or using emeralds to reset the table, which are even rarer.
Give me your thoughts.

The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.
Yeah, i'm usually unlucky getting three options I don't want. I would like to be able to refresh the options. I like this, but you're a bit unclear of the wizard. Do you mean the priest? I also wouldn't go for different items to refresh trades, I would rather spend XP without wasting a tool, or a certain amount of lapis.
It's not the fact enchanting is hard, it's the fact that I don't want to waste a enchanting a tool, and would rather have the option to shuffle the enchantments up.

Enchant a stone shovel? Costs just a bit of XP + some very cheap resources.
I'm going to go with no support on this. If you don't see an enchantment you want on an item, there are tons of other things you can check for good enchantments instead. For example, if I want a Fortune 3 pick and I see that I will get Silk Touch, I just ask myself "Alright what other gear do I need to enchant?" Usually I'll still need a good Shovel or Axe enchantment, or something on my Sword or Bow. Or my Armor. So I check all the other stuff out (let's be honest, you have it all crafted anyways), and enchant something else. Then the next time I have another chance for Fortune 3.
The way I see it, there is always SOMETHING you need to enchant besides the tool that you need enchantment X for. Unless you're just enchanting it and storing it in a chest, but then you don't really need to enchant it anyways.

This would change everything about enchanting. The enchanting system is fine and easy as it is, especially with the new update. If that's not enough, you could always use books and combine them in a anvil. Also, what Badprenup stated, is also true to begin with, you will need something else to enchant before enchanting what you needed in the first place.
You can already roll enchantments by spending XP and lapis to enchant a junk item; enchanting anything at any level will reset the enchantments offered, so make a wooden shovel (the cheapest tool, one log makes two) and enchant it for 1 level/lapis to reset the enchantments.
Consider also that even if you enchant several junk items for every item you enchant you will still spend FAR less XP than under the old system, where you never knew what you were getting until you spend 30 levels on it (you only spend 306 XP to make a level 30 enchantment for 3 levels; with the old system you spent 825 XP, a difference of 519 XP; spending one level at level 30 costs 107 XP so you can enchant 4 junk items and still spend less XP - and less diamonds - without using books, which are impractical in 1.8 due to the anvil costs, although in older versions combining level 1 enchanted books was a cheap and effective way to get "common" enchantments like Efficiency, even Efficiency V).

After 1.2 it has been made easier in so many different updates.
Always using best possible gear is already normal and easy in endgame.
No support, enchanting is easy enough already.

Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
