Communication/online friend list would be awesome. But the whole world sharing. How would that work? In order for two people to play together they have to do so over a server. That means either the player would have to host a server to share his world... which is already what playing on a server basically is... or Mojang would have to have servers constantly running, hosting all of our countless worlds so we can invite people into them. You know what that means? That means we'd most likely have to pay for such services. I agree that improvements should not go beyond the true essence of the game and in this instance that essence is its accessibility. Sharing worlds is already very possible, maybe an automated, in-game function would be nice, but so far I think all of the source for Minecraft is simple enough that the feature isn't really necessary.
That no-brain piggies thing explains a lot.
1-Explains why they are so morrons
2-Explains why they come to us when we kill them
3-Explains where do zombie pigmen come from
4-Doesn't explain why this guy has sig'd me
Yes on Social Overhaul, no on trading for obvious and already mentioned reasons.
I think it would be awesome to see a list of online friends, their statuses, which server they are on (and the option for server owners to hide their server name where it would normally appear on the list), and with proper (granted) permission invite users to your server.
"Hey man, I'm on my first night and I just run out of torches; mobs are gonna be flooding my bathroom all night. Can I have some coal?"
"Sure bro, but my tree farm just got burnt down, and I need a few saplings."
That would never happen. It ruins the point of the game. I'll tell you what would happen.
Here have these 60 TNT I gave myself with invedit worked diligently to acquire.
[/qupte]
Uh, I don't get what you're getting at.
*opens trade*
"Hey, who are you?"
"Here have these 60 TNT I worked diligently to acquire."
"...why?"
"I didn't INVedit them for sure."
"Why would I need that?"
"SO YOU CAN ILLEGALLY OBTAIN TNT AND TOTALLY GRIEF YOUR MAIN SSP WORLD, THERFOR RUINING NOTCH'S PLANS, MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA"
Trading things generated with INVedit isn't a crime, as long as anyone can actually get INVedit if they have an IQ over 5.
It's horrible to give one hacked items over trade, right? no.
They can easily download a LEGAL and ENDORSED inventory editor to get the materials in the first place - it's what everyone's been doing. So what's so bad about giving a free trial into someone else?
And lets say I bought Minecraft for a friend who has never played it, he gets in and I give him some torches and armor.
He loses his first impression of the game.
That's not a fair trade.
Why would that ruin his impression? He KNOWS you're trading with it, it says "trading with ragdh" right there at the top - not that he actually spawns with it in his inventory without a clue.
And why would you deliberately be giving torches and armor to a newbie just to ruin his first impression? That would be on YOU, not the trading system. Trading is optional, you can ignore it all you want.
1) Everyone saying "eww, steam" - I know social networking can get out of control, but the costs are greatly outweighed by the benefits of being able to connect with your friends in Minecraft. It's an absolute must in any multiplayer game. I'd be surprised if a friends list doesn't exist by or before commercial release.
2) Trade box is an absolute must - but obviously people shouldn't be able to trade items between worlds. As long as people can only trade items within the same world, by meeting physically in person (like in a MMORPG), there's no problem with that. This is especially vital for RPG/RP servers, where trading is common.
3) As others have said, ranking doesn't seem necessary.
4) Additional suggestion - guilds. Let players join guilds, and have a guild page, where they can read updates, visit the guild server, and let guild leaders create and assign ranks and powers to their members.
5) Additional suggestion - some sort of global blacklist for griefers. How exactly this would be implemented would probably require an entirely different thread. In some form though I really want this, this way on servers we don't have to panic and get paranoid every time someone new comes in.
6) Additional suggestion - a favorite servers list. Players can bookmark servers. This is another one I expect to see before release.
Good idea in theory but in reality could cause more trouble then it's worth. Player Q buys minecraft for first time. Player Q spots online and clicks it. Player Q is confused, it's super effective. Player Q is annoyed with fact they have to join a server. Player Q stops playing minecraft. Player Q speaks bad about game to selective friends or worse starts a crusade against minecraft for having all this online stuff but no free servers. Others jump on bandwagon of minecraft hate and soon the ignorant loud speaking minority have there agents find ways to do stuff in minecraft to conflict with there values. Soon a selective small group not buying game because of a friend could morph into masses based on nothing or cheap imitations that are just a shell of minecraft flood market made by big companies with budget to advertise games across everything and possibly even take away minecraft players who are fan zombies to specific publishers or worse consoles. Then a meteor hits the earth causing mass extinction... and not being serious just saying everything could have unforeseen consequences. Not just a idea must be thought of but what overreaching impact it could have. Plus I generally miss the days of games that could stand on singleplayer alone when now if you own console most games in some way promote multiplayer more with short singleplayer, multiplayer only achievments and making singleplayer so hard it begs for co-op.
This is a great idea. I sent an e-mail to Notch, maybe increasing our hopes. Hopefully, I get an e-mail back saying " ". And putting my two cents in, I really see no problem with a trading system. Obviously, it would be better in Single Player, and maybe could only occur between friends? Anyways, great idea :smile.gif:

That would be useful. Sometimes you just can't trust people, trade system would be great. The online status would help me a ton, but I don't like the colored text idea. It would get confusing on servers that use ranks with colored names.

So you say 1.4 is fail because you don't know how to update your server? WTF
Thats like saying all cars fail because you don't know how to put gas in them.

You just made me tingle bro, you know... down there..
Someone could really abuse this trade system. Say one person is a mod on one server and likes to play another but has no items. well the person could log on to both with seperate PCs and trade a bunch of diamonds for a log.
YES! I really really really really want the "Invite friend to world" thing, that way I don't have to set up an SMP server (requiring an extra computer) just to play a casual game with a friend (it's a world that we only ever play on if both of us are playing at once).
100x for you!

I dont see how this would ruin minecraft especially as you give no evidence on how it would do so...anyway i support this idea

At very least Mojang needs to add skin-changing in-client. This "friends" feature would be even more badass.

I like friends list with online status and in-game skin upload, but trans-world trading would probably break the game.
Also, there should be in-game voice chat.
