My idea for minecraft is another liquid substance, oil! Oil would be a blackish color and flow like other liquids. It would flow faster than lava but slower than water. Similar to underground water, it could be found flowing, or in an underground lake. Oil should be flammable though, so if you light a flint on it, it will catch and eventually burn out.
Oil could have many uses. First you would need a bucket to hold the oil, similar to water you click and the oil over that block is removed, the other oil would flow over it of course but you couldn't take oil from that block anymore. Oil could make oil lamps, power furnaces, or perhaps (if ever added) used to fuel the engines of a car. The lamps would be similar to swords and spades, they run out of fuel over a long time (but the lamp itself doesn't wear down unless you use it to mine, which isn't recommended)
Lamps would be constructed like this
First you need the lamp. []
Note: the iron in changeable, perhaps the better material you use, the longer it burns?
Or possible []

= bucket
Then you would use the newly crafter lamp and add oil

= oil = lamp
The lamps could be hung on walls also, they shine brighter than normal torches and never burn out when placed on a wall though.
When you hold the lamp as a tool the cave would light up like this:

Edit: sorry it didnt turn out right, just picture a pyramid shape of light coming out form the lamp
The :biggrin.gif: is the lamp and the is the light, the further away from the lamp the lower the light level.
Fuel would be used to power engines for new vehicles, motor boats would require this as a fuel, you could also make minecarts that run themselves with this as a fuel, the creation of the motor vehicles would be relatively easy , first you would need an engine, the recipe could be something like this (Note: since redstone powered tracks were made to propel vehicles forward this idea is outdated)
[]
(note: its just an idea maybe minecraft could make metal pipes or bring back gears that could be used to make an engine) you could add fuel by placing the bucket of oil in with the engine in a crafting table, or even in the inventory, then simply place it behind the vehicle you want to add an engine to
Eg.
[] [] [] :biggrin.gif: []
[] [] [] is engine is the vehicle
Oil could also be used if minecraft allows metal objects to "rust" buckets could rust after picking up and dropping perhaps 20 water blocks, you could just add the oil in the inventory with it to oil the bucket and make it usable again. Maybe you could also use the oil on metal tools, like on steel picks to increase the time it has until wearing down.
The laws of oil (not made by me)
Quote from Gunnar120 »
If notch decides to change his mind about no oil, here's my Idea laws of minecraft oil physics:
1----- It flows one unit in every direction. The flow blocks would go at a 45 degree angle to the ground.
1.5--- From a spring when falling vertically, its would fall straight vertically and not spread at the spring like water.
2----- Walking / swimming in it makes for incredibly slow movement.
2.5--- 2x as fast Suffocation
3----- Infinite oil springs can only be found naturally; they can not be made with 2 oil buckets
4----- Oil in a bucket x1 can power a furnace for 25 smelts
5----- Oil can be used to make Torches
6----- No Vehicles.↙(Period)
7----- If oil (lake or otherwise) is set on fire, it will spread for 5 blocks in every direction before dieing out
8----- If oil meets water, they will stay seperate like real oil and water
8.25- If oil is poured on water, it will float on top
8.5-- If water is poured on oil, it will sink to the bottom
8.75- If it meets lava, it will burn. Refer to Law 7
9----- Re-read law 6. Read it thoroughly. Vehicles require long and horrible code
10---- We will all cheer if adds oil.
1) unrefined oil, or crude oil, can/should be refineable into a general "refined oil" (gasoline, petrol, diesel, kerosene, etc.) which is 10 to 20% better (more light, longer fuel time, etc.) than crude oil, but cannot be placed as a block, or dropped like a liquid.
2) sugar cane can also be turned into 'refined oil' which is identical to the one made from natural crude oil.
[I.e.]
sugar cane ---> sugar
9x sugar ---> sugar block
sugar block --(furnace)--> refined oil
Wow so many good suggestions!
I like it but i think oil would be harvested through a bucket and when making a recipe you would get a bucket as a by product.

Maybe you right click with it and it places the oil in the recipe, leaving the bucket in your hand?
I don't like the idea of engines, but I think using it to create oil lamps and power minecarts is a great idea. You could construct an oil rig! Oil could flow under the seabed but be as rare as gold, and when you find it, you can either take ages carrying it out in buckets, or use an oil rig (New item).
Oil Rig
[] [] []
When you place a rig, it collects all the oil in the area of a 10X10 block radius, and deposits it at it's base as Oil in "Oil buckets". These buckets are like regular buckets but are one time use. The rig is also one time use and onse the oil buckets are collected it breaks.
To power a minecart, you would need the engine as you stated above, and "Petrol".
Petrol
= Oil
Also, finally,
Thank you I really appreciate that, I really like the idea of an oil rig too, It would help alot, and with the engines, I think it would work with the minecarts, and maybe with a boat maybe it looks like a motor boat, but instead of propelling you forward automatically you can move faster.
You were kinda ambiguous with your opinion on the engine, you said you didn't like it then said you liked the idea of an engine in a minecraft.
I didn't word it right. What I meant, was that I didn't like the idea of cars as they're to modern for minecraft, but I think motorized boats would work, and motorized minecarts would make awesome roller coasters.

Go to the ideas tab, and post it there. It's more likely to get noticed by Notch there.
I think this is what notch is going to use for laterns, maybe.
but anyway I approve.
edit : I think lamp should be this = bucket =wool

Let's see...
First of all, movable lighting is shite in minecraft. Your hand lamp idea is out.
Second, notch is planning on making lamps, and he mentioned they most likely won't use iron.
Iron, while abundant, is already too useful- I'd say smooth stone in place of any iron you're using, with the added bonus that they won't melt under a lamp's flame.
Not sure about oil. Seems a bit new-agey. Maybe rename to crude oil, to fit with minecraft's theme.

Crude oil could be better I guess, and the head lamp would work well with the better light mod (I've seen videos of it), Maybe instead of smooth stone a new mineral? Perhaps copper or something else?

I never really expected cars, I just said that meaning if they ever did.
Not sure that would fit but its an ok idea.
