I don't know if you are still taking suggestions or not, but I have 2 new items that I wish to add to this request:
Razorgrass:
Discription: Razorgrass is a plant found in the nether. It is extreamly painful to touch as it is covered in razor-sharp, barbed thorns. It it bloodred and appears similar to thorny wheat, but without the buldge at the top of the plant.
Spawning: Razorgrass is found in clumps of 7-15 scatterd throughout the neather. Clumps spawn about once every 2-3 chunks, more often beside the lava oceans
Special effects: any mob that enters a block of razorgrass takes 1/2 heart of dmg every half second. if razorgrass is adjacent to lava, it will grow to a height of 2 blocks in 8-12 minutes. This allows razorgrass to be farmed. Due to the color of razorgrass, it blends in to the neatherrack it spawns on.
Smolderstone:
Discription: Made from the fossilized remains of ghasts, this porrus rock contains dangerous pockets of natural gas and gunpowder. It looks like a pale red sponge. It breaks as fast as coal.
Spawning: Smolderstone is found at any elevation in the neather, but is about as common is gold. After all, you don't want to scare the miners too much.
Special effects: If broken with any other than a wood/grimwood pick (wood doesn't make sparks) it explodes with force of 2 and sets fire to the area (this is between a ghast and a creeper in potency). If a wood/grimwood pick was used, it instead drops 4-8 gunpowder. Smolderstone is set off by other explosions and has no countdown.
I hope you like my ideas, feel free to modify then as needed.
Sabata, I agree on the mob point, but some of the new blocks were decent. Why do you think I expanded on the sapropod when I made my graphics?
Anyway, I'm willing to do some art for this thread if needed. I can also try to help with some of the mobs. Just throwing it out there.
I honestly forgot about the other plants he thought up.
The one that blows up if you step on it and the white tumbleweed were good, imo. Unique and still added to the feel of the Nether.
When this thread started I TOLD him that the flora and fauna were his strong points.
The more I read this thread though the more I'm willing to make the new thread myself.

Yeah, i think he is KIND of away from minecraft for the moment because he's a bit depressed that he lost all his work. Oh, the irony; the more he neglects this thread, the more likely it is that his friend will overwrite the data and he will never be able to recover the files.
But if you want to make a new thread, I can help with the art.
I'm talking it over with Grey to help in the formatting, and I'm going to attempt to cannibalize as much from the other threads (mobs, feel, this one) as I feel works (so sprites/grid recipes/etc).
I don't want to make it yet though, until I've gotten a fair amount of the target down (ie, psychological or physical scary, what to cannibalize, and so on).
I'll probably ask for a banner from you first though.
If you make the new thread. I'll start hitting all the old Ideas I've come across that I've noted down as being decent ideas for improving the nether.

I like everything except for the portal blocks i don't like anything the completely eliminates all the current forms of transport
Actually, I like the idea of an "emergency escape portal" but it would be made like this:
And instead of creating a full portal, it would just warp you directly back into the overworld (or if you use it in the overworld it would warp you directly to the Nether) but it wouldn't create any portal that could be used to come back, so if you teleported right into the middle of solid stone, you'd be screwed.
I have added one of the banners from the OP to my signature. I am already a fan of the Nether, and have been since its' inclusion; but I would very much like to see these new items and recipes.
Minecraft, I think, is already done in the development of game play. Sure there are going to be new mobs and items and things, but what i really look for is the visuals. Obviously if I cared about visuals i wouldn't play Minecraft lol, but in the visual sense the game is really lacking. there are only two kinds of flowers. That stinks. :sad.gif: I want to make a garden and have lots of beautiful and interesting things to look at in my world.(Not to mention searching for hours to find Lapiz Lazuli) *sigh* If this gets made it will be a glorious day indeed! A house made of grimwood and other magnificent and wonderously gorgeous! Sexy! AWESOME! MATERIALS!!! O_O i got a little carried away... whatever i like these ideas and support them fully.
I support the concepts this thread are about fully. In the Aether's thread, one of the biggest reasons Notch doesn't want to add an Aether yet is because he wants to ensure it's interesting - because the Nether is not.
So, what must be done here? It's rather simple - the Nether must be improved! At present, there is absolutely no variety in the Nether - it's all exactly the same thing. You go in, and you have a whole bunch of this peculiar material that burns forever. You have a whole bunch of lava pouring down from the ceiling, forming giant pools down below. You've got clumps of this fragile, glowing crystal all over the place, and occasionally you run into this sandy material that you can't seem to walk across quickly.
And you have really awful monsters.
And that's it. That's the Nether. There is nothing else to it.
What we have right now is cool. But it's not enough. We need more to it. Yes, I agree - biomes are a necessity. The current Nether is definitely what we want to have as the main overlying premise, of course. But there needs to be regions that differentiate, and occasionally SERIOUSLY differentiate. I also think certain mobs should be centralized in certain biomes (same in the overworld, but that's irrelevant at the moment). And I DON'T think ALL mobs should be hostile. There should be SOME sort of friendly mob, maybe one that's extremely difficult to find and very skittish, but valuable when you DO locate it (possibly tamable? powerful fighter? drops something fantastic?).
At present, the Nether is just a whole lot of the same thing, and that thing is only worthwhile every vaguely so often.
This is a support bump.
Glowing shrooms, dragons, and freezers.

By the way i love that music.

At least, it needs a reason to go underground.
And in reality obsidian is a very weak material. This game isn't based off of our reality, and a jungle can't exist next to a tundra.

It will be pretty soon here.
The trio that are making the Aether mod are also putting this in.
