I think the ores should be given the names of real-life materials, or at least well known mythical ones.
Minecraft doesn't really seem like the kind of game to have it's own made up materials.
Even if they're wildly unrealistic in their portrayal; coal, iron, diamonds, obsidian, etc-
They're all real things.
I would like the concept of the nether ores better and also think they'd be more at home in Minecraft if you gave them established names.
EVERYTHING ELSE IS INSANELY AWESOME.
But the Nether is made up... so the ores should be made up, too.
Whaaaat.
Nether is totally a synonym with "Under" and "Down".
And it's hell.
Totally not made up.
Well, the glowstone, netherrack, soulsand, and zombie pigmen are made up. A portal made from a frame of obsidian set on fire is pretty made up. And, instead of following the standard of gaming, be original and maybe even set the standard.

-And not to mention that there was never such a thing as "CREEPERS" in other games or anywhere else. I personally believe that Minecraft will be best if it has not only some originality... but also some invention... -in addition to having real world items and materials in the game. But you see, that's what makes Minecraft so cool. You could never mine 20,000 acres with a single diamond pickaxe. Nor could you ever grow trees in only three days. Also, no where in the universe does any liquid flow eternally... except I suppose wine from the holy grail, where ever it is.
What would be the point of playing a game that contains only real life materials? You might as well become a real-life miner and go collect it for a living.
Please don't get me wrong though, Masocristy, I like your view on uniformity for Minecraft. You're right about that. Oh, -by the way... thanks for the "EVERYTHING ELSE IS INSANELY AWESOME" quote. People like you boost our morale here, and personally you give me a reason to continue updating this thread.
-People that like to tear down bad ideas unintentionally keep the good ideas from growing.
Hm...
Still can't say I like it, the namings, but I guess your arguments make sense.
I think I feel like making up monsters is more of a regular videogame convention?
And materials isn't.
But that's just probably own preferences and tastes.
It would be better if they didn't have generic metal sounding names, I think.
Names that didn't end it -ite or -ium.
I like Grimwood just fine, though, so this probably doesn't make much sense.
(I don't mean to insult by calling them generic, just didn't know what other word to use there; I hope you get what I was going for.)
But wutever, just my ideas.
Edit: After I sent that post, my ideas cleared up a little.
-I just think the naming conventions don't fit minecraft! But in a different way.
Creepers might not be real, but their name is still, I guess, real? Notch didn't tag them with some exotic sounding assortment of syllables, just gave them a more down-to-earth label.
-Same with Zombie Pigmen, and even Ghasts (They are obviously eldritch Boos, c'mon. Ghosts) Same with the Nether.
-And SoulSand and Glow Stone and, well, I guess Nettherrack doesn't really fit. I always thought it was a typo (For Nether Rock) or I thought it was off that he gave it such a weird name. But then this is just my tastes coming in again.
-The names aren't too outlandish, though. Durodium is durable, that's plain and simple. Thermosetite is hot, that's fine. Charoite kind of threw me. I thought of "Charred" and thus coal but that didn't fit. I also thought of Charon, who is from the underworld and ferries people on a boat (which makes for the portal block). Kitrinite stumps me, though.
-Maybe if you could just reformat the names a little? I'm not asking for complete uniformity in this case, I think. Making up names would be cool but- Giving them names that are just a bit less ..made up sounding? Not sure how else to phrase that, but I hope you get what I mean. Still obviously making up names here, but using real words.
Hello? I was just looking at your picture on the original ideas page with the new stuff. What are those new foods and those upgrades? I would just like some info on this please. Two of those new foods look kinda like jellybeans, and those new arrows aren't described (except for the poison one), and what is that bow? The boat? I think the boat should be a boat that crosses lava, especially for Nether travel. Crafting recipe:
[] [] [] [] =
= Grimwood = The new boat.
New food:
Jellybeans
Healing power: 2 hearts
Appearance: Looks like bone meal, but red.
Mint
Healing power (raw): .5 hearts
Appearance: Just basically a green rose.
Can be crafted with a bucket of milk to make tea.
[] []
[] [] =
[] []
= Tea = Mint = Bucket of milk = Sugar
Tea
Healing power (cold): 3.5 hearts
Warm: 5 hearts
Can be warmed by putting in a furnace for a bit.
Looks like a bucket of milk, but the milk looks green, light green.
This entire idea is tremendous. I love it all, and I have to say I'm really impressed with all the thought you guys have put into this. It would be a shame if Mojang didn't at least take these ideas into consideration.

When is this thread going to be updated? You said you'd do it soon, but it's been like 2 weeks since then.
I think this is a great idea, but you really need to be ontop of this if you want it to be implemented.

Yeah. We haven't updated enough of the code yet...
Sorry guys, but I'll have to extend the revamp completion until Thursday. There's a lot there and life priorities come first. HOWEVER, I WILL BE REVAMPING AND ADDING A BIT MORE EVERY DAY... SO YOU'LL SEE SOMETHING NEW PRETTY MUCH EVERY DAY.
THE MOBS WILL COME FIRST, THEN THE BIOMES, THEN THE EDITING OF PREVIOUS IDEAS.

-"Healing ability: Put charoite beneath your pillow, especially if you are prone to disturbed sleep or fears which surface in dreams. In combination with amethyst, it will help to release these fears."
And again:
-"Mystical power: Charoite is said to be useful for the cleansing and purification of one's energy body as well as for the transmutation of negative energies within oneself.
Charoite transmutes negativity and cleanses the aura. Charoite facilitates the release of fear and dissolution of negative energies encountered in the process of aligning with your soul's purpose. Work with Charoite to foster a synthesis between the heart and crown chakra, walk your spiritual path with awareness, and manifest your soul's wisdom and light in daily life. The purple color of Charoite, among its other roles, helps to bring us closer to spirit by showing us that everything, even the thoughts we hold as true, can be dissolved and replaced with more empowering energies.
The color black in this stone grounds the purple ray, and enables us to explore the nature of our fears; while white represents the connection to spirit."
(-Of course, I don't believe in any of this stuff... or those cultish ideologies some people like to call "New Age Religion"... but I think its an incredibly thing to put into a fantasy game like Minecraft.)
Hence the purpose of the Sanctuary Block... Charoite supposedly removes negative thoughts, fears, dark auras, emotions and inspires good feelings, positive thoughts and joyful atmosphere. Therefore the Hostile Mobs dislike it altogether and furthermore cannot come near it.
I have also been considering the possibility that it HEAL players who stand within its protection radius. It kind of has the effect of the Peaceful difficulty setting. If I added that concept however, I would have to be careful... a healing block might be a little OP. However... If I changed it so that you couldn't be able to move the stone after placing it, I think it would really balance the issue. Also, it would heal only at an extremely slow rate... like one half heart every thirty seconds.
With kitrinite, I however have to agree with you. I cannot seem to remember what correlation it had with its name. I'll have to change it.
One question though... what would you call it?
Also, I'm renaming Thermosetite to Infernum. Infernum sounds a hell of a lot cooler. -Ooopsies, those puns were not intended. But I also think Infernum makes a little more sense to use, because I already have Kitrinite and Charoite... which both end in -ITE.
Yeah. We haven't updated enough of the code yet...

Kitrinite makes me think of kittens, if it was KINtrite, I could imagine it as, 'akin to Charoite'.
Also, yeah Infernium is awesome.
I had an idea for a block called Deinos, which looks like a Netherrack with eyes. The eyes are actually bacterium who make a limestone mound (the white) and the Bacterium is the Iris, the Pupil is Bacteria that has become old and turned black. It would be mined for Deinos Bacterium (also know as Deinos Dust), which is used as Yeast in Netherbread.

Hmm... interesting concept. Farming something like that would be better than mining it... you know... with a hoe, instead of pickaxe... or perhaps that's what you meant. I actually like the idea of a yeast, although the game currently has a bread recipe that is considerably simpler. I like the idea of harvesting another Nether fungus/bacterium a lot as well... and for food especially. However, I need to find a purpose for saprophyte before going on to something like yeast. What would be good for saprophyte? Someone has suggested it to be used as lava Sponge... but however cool that might be, it just doesn't really match what saprophyte is or what it does. Hmm...
Based upon some things I've read, researchers claim that Indian Pipe, (the flower I based the Nether Saprophyte on,) has medicinal properties... specifically as a nervine medication.
After much inspiration on account of PwnageguyXD's suggestion about green nether flowers and tea, I figured... why not use that for Saprophyte? In the next revamp I may imply that after harvesting saprophyte, it could be made into ground tea leaves and then mixed into bucket of water along with sugar, in order to make a tea to serve as a form of powerful, yet elongated-timespan health restoration. In other words... each drink would heal you up to 5 hearts, but over a long period of time... like half a minecraft day or so. Its not only a delicious beverage... its also a medicinal one.
It could be the beverage at hosted tea parties, along with Slime Jello dessert and cake.
Oh ho ho!
I guess Charoite is ok, then!
Well, actually, the name is still kind of weird...
But its connection to a real life material excuses that, I guess!
As for Kitrinite...
Well, I dunno.
It seems to be filling three unrelated roles.
A quick sacrificial mineral for a short lived boost in power, fitting into the portal block and the nether's anti-coal.
Coal doesn't really do anything but burn, you can't even make blocks out of it.
Its related to the portal block, though.
Ir there anything about a bright lime color in there?
That'd be kind of a stretch, though, since it ignores the other two functions.
(Unless the significance of the lime color somehow incorporates them?)
It could be the beverage at hosted tea parties, along with Slime Jello dessert and cake.
The Slime jelly should be craftable. A single jelly could be eaten by itself, and crafting them could make a placeable item, like cake, which could then be eaten bit-by-bit. These would be great for the food shop I am making, which was originally just a bakery...
I had always felt that the nether was kind of lame, and this update would make it a hell of a lot more usefull and awesome to go to! I support this suggestion 100%
I had a cool idea. what if there was a liquid in the nether that flows like water but UP. you will also move faster while going up and the liquid is completely opaque. It will spawn in little pockets surrounded by netherrack when you open the cavity it comes spewing upwards.
like this: = this liguid = nether rack
Sapropype are strange whitish plants with a bell like blossom that grow on soulsand blocks. A use for this plant has yet to be suggested.
I know they aren't on the Soul Sand, but here was a little graphic I made of it.
Perhaps they can be crushed up to make a Beige/Peach dye. As simple and underwhelming as that sounds, there are going to me tons of people happy to see it, due to the massive demand for flesh colored dyes by pixel artists and moral makers.

Charoite is a REAL and believed sacred mineral. Read about it here at this webpage or (google) it: http://www.all-that-gifts.com/se/charoite.html
And I quote from this page (*clears throat):
-"Healing ability: Put charoite beneath your pillow, especially if you are prone to disturbed sleep or fears which surface in dreams. In combination with amethyst, it will help to release these fears."
