Hello, I've posted this idea to the Get Satisfaction page already. But to get as much exposure as possible I've decided I'd also post my idea here(with added details!).
Basically my idea is that a Pitching Tool should be added to the game. This tool would be used to knock off chunks of a solid block, much like how eating a in-game cake works...But not exactly like eating a cake! For there wouldn't be just one set direction for which chunk gets knocked off. Depending on which part/side of the block your facing would determine which chunk of the block would be removed. You could of course remove chunks from all directions of the block using any combination of removal; you wouldn't be stuck just removing one side.
How this tool would be made:
[] []
[] []
[] [] Which Blocks this tool could be used on: Wood, Wooden Planks, Stone, Cobblestone, Brick, Sandstone, Diamond Block, Gold Block, Iron Block, Lapis Lazuli Block, Double Stone Slab, BookShelf, Moss Stone, Ice, Obsidian.
This would be extremely useful for... well everything. Building with huge cubes gets difficult sometimes. Although, even if you cut off the blocks and made it thinner, it would still take up a whole block space and you wouldn't be able to put anything in it. So it's really just for looks.
Well it would be great, I don't think something like that would be possible, or even suited towards minecraft.

Yeah, purely for making better looking structures and what not. But it would also add a bit more moving room inside buildings and what not, cause you'd be able to make thinner walls.
And for those of you who would like to bump up this idea on getsatisfaction here's the link to it: Link Removed
And here comes the next question. Where does the piece you cut off go to?
The piece you cut off would disappear completely, and if you kept cutting off chunks until there were no more chunks left you would not get the block back.
Maybe.
You see, I love this idea, and the many like it. It goes along with the whole chisel/sculpt idea, a tool that would let you take away corners of the block geometry. It's great.
However...
The problem is save size and performance. Having a slow computer, I'm very wary of impacting those things. The rendering of a world gets a whole lot more complicated, and the amount of data it takes up would increase hugely.
So my answer is yes, but only if Notch could do it without greatly impacting performance (which is unlikely).
P.S. Very nicely presented. You're a role model for the suggestions forum.

Choose your words wisely.
Defend your words flexibly.
Change your words fittingly.
Let prejudice, popular opinion, and preconception be free from your judgments.

The piece you cut off would disappear completely, and if you kept cutting off chunks until there were no more chunks left you would not get the block back.
Or the piece you cut of could become rubble and crafted into the block it was cut from like this.
=rubble
= insert block the rubble came from here.

At least you might have a warning, unlike me when a creeper decide it would be nice to a tea party on top of my door frame.
Oh, you should have said "Would you fancy a spot of tea and some crumpets, my good sssssssir?" to the Creeper.

Thank you very much :happy.gif: and yeah, I understand the concern for not wanting things that slow down the game. But I don't think this would be that taxing. But who am I to say? I'm no programer, and I have a pretty good computer, haha.

A hunter who chases two rabbits will catch neither
if you make the block smaller the grid needs tobe smaller aswel, at the moment i am fairly sure that the blocks snap to the grid, if you make the block smaller but not the grid you ould end up with a floating block :/ its a good idea and if it was implemented detail would be qaudroupled

No. What can be done is that it's made so that there can only be one block per current block, but the amount of block shown would be smaller. It's like with half steps, only on a smaller scale.

Ooo, yeah that would be a great idea!
but the smaller it gets the more info there is, it would be hard to save and load-ill ad more tomorrow but i gotta go sleep
I fixed that for you.
Anyway, I think this is an excellent idea. It would be nice for town walls and whatnot.

Well the grid size wouldn't change, just the size of the block. I don't really see how it would effect loading/saving that much.
Clay isn't solid.
