I am suggesting some revisions to the note blocks; these are summarized here:
1. Long note v short note
2. Wind sounds
3. Easier to tune
1. Long note v short note
Note blocks should be capable of holding a note longer than a tick or two. I suggest that notes play until the redstone switch is turned off. The percussion blocks need not be affected by this.
2. Wind sounds
A greater variety of instruments would be good. I am proposing that these instruments are added:
Trumpet (above gold block) - bright brass sound. Would allow stuff such as bugle calls.
Flute (above iron block) - mellow wind sound. Calm and relaxing.
Theremin (above netherrack or slowsand) - chilling electronic sound. For creepy music.
3. Easier to tune
Rather than right clicking to tune, a right click should bring up a menu in which tuning is selected. This will make tuning very much easier.
I think they should use actual...you know...notes. I want to see something like (As apposed to different colored notes coming up) A, B, C, D, E, F, G, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D etc. (The numbers in front of the note indicate the octave.) This way, it can still be used by non-musicians (They'll figure it out) And actual musicians can transpose songs or write their own.
It would also be nice to string note blocks together so that when one finishes, the next starts, that way we don't have to make overly elaborate redstone circuits, and then we'll have to trigger each block separately! >_<
It would be great to connect note blocks with redstone together, and when one is triggered it plays, then it sends a message down the outgoing redstone wire kind of like a button instead of having them touch directly to do the transfer. This could be really cool in making a song play with just one button without an overcomplicated work around.
I have no issue against the redstone circuitry required; I feel that a working music-machine that plays a non-repeating song is a masterpiece to be created by somebody who is good at many things.

Some way to see where it is besides raising it up one note at a time and watching the note come up in a different color isn't that easy to use.
