This may have been suggested many times before, but I think that fish shouldn't only be edible items. Fish would have 1 health point so they would have the same amount of health as a tiny slime. You still could go fishing and collect normal fish item, but underwater if you killed a fish mob all it would drop is XP and and 0-2 prismarine shards.
I want this so bad but Mojang rarely ever listens to these suggestions.suggestions. Maybe a mod somewhere out there has it.Confused about the prismarine drops.

They would drop prismarine shards just so there is a reason to kill them besides XP
I never liked the idea of fish mobs. It would only look nice if there were lots of fish, which would lag the game incredibly. I also don't like how the fish just vanishes into xp if you kill it, it makes no sense.
However, I do want visible fish. I think they should be implemented as particles that move randomly through water. The amount of fish could be lowered with the particle setting so there wouldn't be any lag. It would also remove the possibility of interacting with the fish, keeping it semi-realistic and not making fishing rods obsolete.

Support. Why not add this?
Its a nice suggestion, but I don't see why it drops prismarine. I think that prismarine should only be obtained via ocean monuments. Overall, I do support. Does it spawn in lakes and stuff?

Hence rarely.
Knowing how 1.8 had become an extreme problem with optimization, I wouldn't consider the addition of a feature that accumulates that lag. Such example are these fish, in which if they were to count as an entity, there would be a terrible lag. As well as, if they were to be as disposable as any mob, it would remove the sense of fishing. If you can kill fish with your sword, why can't you catch it the same way?
I do not agree with the prismarine drops upon death; as stated, they should be a unique drop characterized by the water monument. The addition of the prismarine drops would also exponentially degrade the value of the shards.
Although, the idea of realistic fish has been redundantly suggested in the past, it is simply not feasible. A system where the fish would only be aesthetic particles is pleasing, but again, particles and water rendering do not do well together.
I think fishing is fun the way it is also prismarine shards?
Are these fish guardians?
and as the person above me i think there would be lag aswell
Saying that a mod has this stuff is totally against the forum rules. This is a suggestion, so there is no reason to say that " X mod has it, so there will be no reason to add this stuff, just download it". This is a suggestion for Vanilla Minecraft, not just a user-created addition for Minecraft survival.
Anyways, I think adding visible fish may be a good idea, but considering that it will add too much lag to Minecraft may be a terrible result. And, why do they drop Prismarine shards, I'm confused because it's from Guardians already. Instead, I think they should drop themselves. And movement near them will scare them, making them run away and escape. And, another thing, when killed, they should not disappear like a puff of smoke, instead they should float before doing so. I do like this idea, although I think it should drop its respective fish item 25% of the time when killed, and a prismarine shard 2% of the time you kill it. I support this idea.
Plus, as an addon for this suggestion, if you drop a fish item into water, it becomes its respective fish mob. It doesn't apply if you kill the fish, however.

Yes, I think this is the best approach. Making each fish into it's own separate mob entity would be way too CPU intensive.
I have thought a bit about how to make it as low-CPU intensive as possible.
A school of fish should be counted as a single 'mob' entity, the center of which would be used to determine the movement of simple 2D "fish" particles that would move in simple semi-random paths around the center, favoring movements that makes them stay near the center. That wway you could have lots of fishes without lagging. Overall it would be a pretty lightweight to process, the school of fish entity would require more CPU than 1 cow, but much less than 1 entity per fish.
Fishing rod odds should probably be affected by how many schools of fishes are within range.

This seems like a cool idea but as you travel you'll reveal more ocean and make more lag because of all the fish and squid floating around. Lag is probably the biggest problem but could be fixed. And maybe you could do something with fishbones? Support.
I've always thought this a good idea ever since I saw the forgotten mod! I think instead of Prismaine Shards maybe raw fish and also you could go hand fishing (just my thoughts though)! Fully Support
