I think that it would be cool if you could find books in dungeons with crafting recipes in them. the books could be called something like: wood to diamonds (basic tool building),the dark fires (nether info and portal building), the secrets of dirt (plant info, crop info), combat and traps(swords, tnt, pressure plates), Redstone the beginners/intermediate/expert/ultimate guide(you need four books for redstone info), etc.

I would like it if a book contains multiple pages where each page can be filled with text or a picture (user has to choose). The picture would have to be selected from the screenshot directory (this allows adventure builders to include beautifully hand-painted book pages) and players to keep a journal, describe server rules etc. To draw a crude map, climb to the top of the world, look down and make a screenshot (F1+F2).
I would say that the player starts out with a single book in his inventory which contains some tutorial info and basic recipes (basically a partial copy of the wiki crafting page).
To open a book simply equip it and right-click. I would choose to display two pages side-by-side such that one page can contain an image and the other an explanation in text. The left page would have a curl to go to the previous two and the right page to go to the next two. An edit button at the top of the page allows changing of content.
Naturally books are stored in a bookshelf. Each newly created bookshelf would provide three empty books.

This suggestion is in my opinion one of the more vital and urgent additions to add to Minecraft as it adds the narrative it so desperately needs.
The content of books themselves should probably be stored independent of a specific game world as you might want to download or copy books from friends or Minecraft gurus to add to your own collection. Furthermore, you wouldn't want to retype your manuals in each and every world you create.
The exact form this mechanic should take and whether it should be supported directly in the game itself is unknown to me at this time. One could for instance think about having a copy-to-collection/remove-from-collection button in each book you read and the ability to reprint any book in your global collection (i.e. across-worlds) through a printing-press.
Something to ponder about.

I like this idea a lot! But I also think if you combine a book and a workbench (craft a book over the workbench) then it will record all crafting items you have MADE (not just happened to see when making something else)

I would say every player starts out with a special book which contains stats, crafting recipes (either all or only the ones you made), etc. The recipe you mention is a great way to recreate such a book should you accidentally destroy it.

One way is to make the recipe: quill&ink + empty book = written book
(which opens up the edit dialogue whenever the written book is crafted.
Modifying a book could be done by quill&ink + written book = written book.
I do think the quill&ink should have some durability in this case as crafting one for each edit would be a disproportional waste of resources.
Another option I had in mind was that editing a book is always possible directly from the reading interface, but copying a book or loading one from the players (world independent) book archive requires a quill&ink.
The recipe for this would be quill&ink + empty book = written book
which opens up a selector from a list of all books stored on the users machine.
Note: none of this requires a crafting bench.

I was thinking that you would place it on things like tables in your house. Maybe when holding the book, left-clicking would cause you to read it instead of whacking?
