I have been playing Minecraft for quite some time now, and I absolutely love the game. I have noticed -as I'm sure just about every one else has- that there is currently no "purpose in the game", aside from getting diamonds, and then visiting the Nether using your new diamond pick ax.
I think it would be great if Notch added some kind of level-up system, turning Minecraft more of an RPG style game. I'm not quite sure how this could be added in an effective way however, but I'll share just exactly what I was thinking
-Everything a player does in minecraft will give him EXP. Digging up a piece of dirt would offer 5 EXP points, killing a creeper would give 50 EXP points, and building your first Nether portal would give 1000 EXP.
The only thing that I still havn't figured out, is what the purpose of leveling up would be. But I'll leave that open for discussion.
I personally want no sort of leveling up system in Minecraft. Because, imo, that would take what purpose there IS in MInecraft (building things from your imagination) and replace it with....100 Nether portals in a single chunk built for no other purpose than grinding XP.
The purpose of Minecraft is figuring out the purpose of Minecraft.
Think about it.

If facebook, Myspage, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens.

They said 1000 exp for buillding your FIRST nether portal. Or are you talking about smp?
Bleh. No thank you. Experience and grinding as a "purpose" is a pretty horrible existence. Also I would have to sit there and wonder in the case of killing things: "What if the creeper explodes on its own before I get to it? Exp? No? RAGGGEE!"
Of all the various things minecraft is, I can only hope it won't turn into a grind.
Personally even though I've only been playing Minecraft for a few months I think that it doesn't really need a leveling up system. Plus, in my opinion, it has a purpose- surviving. I think its plenty of fun doing your best and building buildings and then accidentally letting creepers blow up your buildings- okay well the whole creepers destroy your hard work isn't so much fun, but still, Minecraft definitely does not need a leeling up system.

Leveling and alternate races will never be implemented and Minecraft will not be an RPG. It won't, because it is not an RPG. It's not meant to be RPG like. It would also give beginners in a server an extreme disadvantage.
No. Please. I do not want to have to grind just to level up. The only "point" to Minecraft is to find out the "point" to Minecraft. As stated by most of the populace and Minecraft players. NOW. WHO WANTS TO HAVE A CREEPER WAR?!

Sadly it will be implemented by mod community. What for? For the SMP, which could be fun. However minecraft seems to be the wrong medium for a normal role playing game, as for what in the world would you level up?
Would you be able to destroy blocks faster? It would be kind of lame to have a handicap for being low level, and then can any level be really worth it? I can see some tenth of a second or so be acceptable, but when it gets into obsidian taking half the time, you kind of lose the purpose why it takes so long.
I'm sure everyone can appreciate taking more damage before you die, however then pvp wouldn't exactly be fair, and then monsters lose their fear.
I don't see any realistic statistic that if you level it up, will increase the appeal of the game.
I personally like the idea, but mainly because I'm thinking outside the RPG box for leveling.
Leveling doesn't mean you have to become stronger, it could just be a gauge on how far along you are.
And I don't think you should get XP for building or mining or crafting.
XP should be the result of killing mobs and again, just use it as a gauge on how much combat you've been through rather than an actual rpg styled "level up".
And sandbox games do better when they have goals tacked into the game, which Notch will add eventually, but it's not there quite yet. Mark my words though, there will be goals.
RPG elements doesn't exactly fit in the core game, but works as a secondary element.
It's better to have this as an option rather than a core gameplay, because most of the community can be so stuck up about this.
Maybe players can earn perks or traits when they successfully do something new?
Achievements?
Maybe they can equip titles that boosts certain functions...

Think about it.
Congratulations.

just because you're correct doesnt mean you're right

LOL.
A level 10 cobblestone will be stronger than a level 1 cobblestone...
The creeper won't know what hit him.
Freakin LOVE that saying.
