This idea is one the best ones around, it does bring new block with lots of uses and rare suggestions do. But like you said, it should be efficient like I've been preaching (lol) here for quite some time.
Okay, I worded my post wrong. I like the idea of the sawmill, when I first saw it I thought: "This sounds awesome!". But then I read it and it's basically useless. So I like the idea. But when most of the time it only gives you 4 planks: then just crafting them is more efficient. I personally think it would be great if it gave you 6 planks all the time, and maybe something like a 10% chance to give you 8 planks

Uuuh... droppers, hoppers, dispensers, special rails, pistons, and pretty much everyting connecting to redstone is automation.
Carefully placed water buckets to make a fall-damage mob grinder out of a mob spawner is indeed a creative combination of available mechanics, but a hopper ? You could do by hand everything that a hopper does, but it does it alone, albeit slower. The sawmill follows the same principle : it's hellish slow if you're sitting there looking at it, but the point is that you can just walk away and let it do its thing. Provided you designed the machine that outputs the logs to be sawn, which is a goal in itself. In fact, I would ditch the extra planks output, because then it may be a bit OP.
Now if you don't like this aspect of the game (and are probably annoyed by updates since 1.5), then your disliking makes sense. But face it : automation is already a core gameplay element in vanilla.
I don't think you understood my point concerning how automation detracts from vanilla Minecraft.
Does a hopper automate? Yes. Does it detract? No.
Does a sawmill automate? Yes. Does it detract? Yes.
So then there is some difference that I am perceiving between the two. The difference here is what they automate and the subsequent effects. The very concept of "automation" implies that it is an automatic version of something you can already do by hand, so this clearly cannot be my argument, yet you make it out at such.
Now let's apply a slightly more rigourous examination of the two machines.
A hopper automates the transfer of an item from the ground to an inventory (or from one inventory to another).
A sawmill automates the crafting of logs into wood.
Now we know what they automate - there will then be "subsequent effects" that will necessarily follow.
What utility is gained through the function of a hopper? A lot of things, because its function is general and simplistic, therefore making its application general and widespread. Its function is not specialised to a certain role, so it promotes creativity on the player's part.
What utility is gained through the function of a sawmill (besides traps)? One thing only: the crafting of logs into planks. Its function is specific and narrow, meaning its only application is convenience. And not even convenience, but convenience limited to the concept of a tree farm; thus the player's creativity concerning sawmills is limited to the tree farm (and traps). Does this convenience justify the implementation of the sawmill? No, it does not, because the sawmill as currently suggested does not accomplish much.

You actually have a good point, but I think it may be easily solved : someone else on this thread suggested extending the sawmill's use to other materials than wood. This way, it becomes a way to break blocks, whatever they are.
I've some more suggestions then :
- The crafting recipe for the sawmill does not include the blade. You can place the bladeless sawmill in any of 6 directions.
- You can craft four different blades separately, with the four core tiers of materials.
- You place a blade in the sawmill by right-clicking it with it. You can remove it by right-clicking again.
- The sawmill, when powered, breaks the block in front of it. Breakability and drops are as if you broke the block with the adequate tool of the corresponding tier. Breaking time is a fixed factor of the tool mining time.
I'm stuck with blade durability though. If it had one, it would need to be stored in an item, and the sawmill would be a TE, and thus non-movable. Which sucks a bit.

I come from a server admin perspective, so anything new that comes in subsequent updates, I want to be functionally sensible. I do not care much for the player or "singleplayer experience" as long as the feature is flexible and generalisable (which would give modders, plugin developers, and server admins an easier time). In other words, none of this "do this specific thing because I'm a player and I like that" bullcrap. I will not stand for a machine designed specifically for crafting logs into wood, but I would enjoy a machine that was added simply to introduce a feature, such as a machine that can interact with adjacent blocks to break and/or change them into something else. Notice how the latter is more generic but also much more useful than the former (because the former introduces a machine only to accomplish a specific goal).
If I had it my way, there would be no sawmill. It would just be a "crusher" block (likely a variant of the piston) that would have the feature of "block interaction" via breaking blocks (it should also pass some sort of BlockBreakEvent with the source being "Crusher" rather than passing an entirely new type of event, but I don't know how accomplishable that would be). I would also like to retain the trap aspect of the sawmill as is, but I'm not entirely sure (as of now) how that would fit into a crusher-type block. I would also like to add that block-crushing pistons have been accomplished in Bukkit plugins.
Cool idea! I really hope this block is implemented in to the game, because I have a few friends in mind that i could troll.... and also, it is a great machine that I could use to automate my log farm! I would never have thought about this myself, so i am glad that you did! I wish you the best of luck with this block and its implementation! But as always, Mojang (now owned by Microsoft ) are very strict about their blocks and they don't usually add things into minecraft that players make, but even if it doesn't get added, it is still a good idea!

Sorry everyone for my seeming inactivity. I haven't outright abandoned this idea, I'm merely taking a break and slowing development a bit.
I really like the idea of a sawmill! I have been thinking about this for a while now and it may be possible you will not need any mods at all. What I am saying is, I am pretty sure this could be achieved in vanilla Minecraft. I am going to try out a few different methods and I will be back to show my results!
I support this idea. Although I think you should be able to craft several different blades. Such as stone, iron (even though that's what is being used at the moment), possibly gold, and diamond. Maybe the better the material the more they cut or the longer the durability. Other than that I fully support this.
Hm, judging by the poll, I'm the only person who voted the third option. I'm actually curious to know: what's the difference between the second and the third option? Should they not be one and the same? If something needs refinement, one would not support the idea as it is presented, but would nonetheless support the idea itself for what it could be. So in actuality, anyone who votes the second or third option would be saying both "yes" and "no".
The "but" in the second poll choice is a big qualifier whereas the third choice would be more accurately stated as "No, because I think it needs refinement," which then implies "If the idea were properly refined, then I would support the idea."

I support it but there are two problems, one is that I think that when you step on the sawmill it would hurt you more, since itss a saw, probably 4 and a half hearts every 5 seconds, I think that would balance.
And also like what Helderd said (maybe the blade would take damage, and after a whole lot of blocks it breaks and you have to make a new blade) I think you take out the blade from the crafting recipe, and you just make maybe the crafting recipe just without it, then when you make the sawmill, you make the blade, and when you right click an empty sawmill with a blade it would put the blade in the sawmill, and after about maybe 50 blocks, the blade would dissapear, which means it broke, you have to make a new blade and right click the sawmill again with the blade and it would put in the new one, also if you wanna just take out the blade from the sawmill you can left click the sawmill and that would take it out BUT if you hold left click it would just break the whole sawmill. If you break a sawmill while it has a blade in it, it would not only drop the sawmill, but also the blade
Just to mention something, at this current point, the only thing it does is automation. Literally, a fortune axe can do the same. (Unless the idea of more blocks being cut actually is done.) (Also fortune II give it 2-3 increase, and fortune III gives a 2-4 bonus)

And even if they were affected ummmmmmm lets see how many times would you need to enchant a axe to get fortune hmmmmmmmmm you can't tell but this is actually seriously overpowered. I am pretty sure using a few iron and a few wood blocks is a lot easier than getting diamonds, obsidian, a book, levels, lapis, and lots of wasted time for trying to get the right enchant.
This looks and sounds like a great idea, and I do hope more mid-tier items such as this come into the game. Potions and enchanting were really nice, but the journey to end-game should be equally content packed as the end-game itself (End-game being the part of the game where you are no longer playing through and discovering new things but rather enjoying these things such as mining, building, redstone and more, which in Minecraft's case is literally reaching "The End".)

Instead I thought of a much more useful concept. The saw-mill could be used for cutting any block you'd like into eights. The saw blade would be made of obsidian, so you can cut stronger blocks like diamonds and iron with out the concept being ridiculous of just having an iron saw blade. You then can make vertical half slabs, quarter blocks, eighth blocks, etc. But there would half to be some sort of GUI that would allow you to choose how many eighths you want to cut out of a block, in any type of formation.

The blade could have durability (like a tool), and allow you to create different types of blades (wood, stone, iron, gold or diamond) and even enchant them. Could make the recipe a little cheaper (4 tip blocks (e.g. iron) plus center block -> 6 blades).
The blades would last a set number of uses (as per a normal tool) and process wood at varying speeds. This could allow you to do something like using an Efficiency V diamond blade with a Haste II beacon to do instant conversion.
This would add a cost to running it, in return for the increased output.
Another suggestion, again not sure if it's been mentioned before, would be to allow the input to be made via a hopper or dropper into the side/top/bottom of the mill. This would allow you to create a fully automatic converter. Could also use the bottom as output (similar to a furnace).

I started reading this suggestion assuming I'd dislike it, but turns out it's pretty good Overall, I wouldn't change anything about the suggestion except for one thing - I dislike multi-step recipes. In particular, I dislike that you have to make sawblade separate to then craft a sawmill. There is no other purpose to the sawblade, so it's a wasted step in my opinion.
I say ignore the people talking about multi-tier sawmills, durability, various sawblades types, etc. That's all superfluous. Just make it use an iron block, some redstone, and whatever else you want (stone, wood, etc) and call it done. In order to get iron and redstone, a player would have already had to do some mining. Most likely they're already wearing a full iron kit, so being able to automate wood cutting and (potentially) getting some extra wood is meaningless from a game balance point of view.

I just updated this suggestion. It now provides six planks with every use.
