Minecraft is a great concept that lacks any definitive endgame goals or achievements. I think I might have remedy that can make the game much more interesting and exciting as you progress and not slowly become bored until you quit (for a couple weeks). The engineering side of the game can become much more complex without added difficulty. I'm talking about being able to build functioning machines or props; each with unique mechanics and purposes. This seems very possible and reasonable to me if done correctly.
*Concept: crafting taken to the next level. Create usable machines that just can't be made on a crafting table
What it is: Blueprints will ideally be used as building guides that involve many materials being placed in an exact way to give function to a form of blocks. The interface will be very simple just as it should be in a game like Minecraft. There will be no text. Only multiple views (including isometric) of the desired machine or prop. The materials needed will be colored accordingly (I explain this better at the end).
HOW DO YOU GET A BLUEPRINT?
One way could be creating one yourself and what you get could be randomized. The materials would probably include the new ink turned blue, paper, a feather for writing, and something else to make it a rare phenomenon.
Alternatively it could be a drop off a new boss mob or it can be simple to make but require that you build all of the simple things first to prove your engineering prowess.
WHAT CAN BE MADE?
The possibilities are endless if you get some minds on the topic. However I have thought of a few things that could be of use...
. Flight - Mechanical wings (could require jumping off a cliff)
Two seated plane or jet
Hot air balloon
Large Zeppelin (can fit many)
Rocket!
. Water - Submarine
one man speed boat (maybe with jet skis :biggrin.gif:)
Large ship (maybe equipped with weapons)
. Props - Television (basically a painting with looped animation. can be switched on/off)
Jacuzzi (bubbly and steamy)
. *Mining - A large powerful drill that drills straight down in a 3 by 3 or 4 by 4 square
I'll add more later if this gets a response but you probably get the point. Also don't say the tech is too advanced because the jukebox was invented in 1889
HOW WILL IT WORK?
Once you're lucky enough to acquire such a gem you will find it simple to understand and fun to work on. You equip the blueprint in hand and then right click to bring up a full screen picture of it. Like I said earlier there will be multiple views of the object (top, front, side, isometric) and also will be a key or legend with the amounts of each of the required materials that you must fetch. That is all it will do. It is up to the builder to comprehend the task at hand. This could take a very long time to do, but that is what makes it such so epic. Once everything is gathered and placed on a surface in the exact way that is intended the player right clicks their blueprint on the built object destroying the blueprint causing a shiny visual indication, and giving the object its function. Exciting, right?
I feel blueprints would give the game a lot more depth. It also does't strike me as an impossibility either. I've discovered that a lot of minecrafters enjoy building models of these types of things anyway so why not bring their creations to life? Give the people what they want. I hope this idea at least sparks some creativity. Some feedback would be nice to.
When I was reading ur post at the beginning I was like oh brother because you said achievements(minecraft is a sandbox game) but I kept reading and loved the idea
hmm maybe if npc's are added you could show the blueprints to one and they'll build it for ya like a house made of erm...stone or wood but there'll be a price of materials and/or payment
interesting idea. However, i think it would give the creation more value if the materials are painstakingly gathered and placed perfectly. Would give the result more of an impact. Plus I dont think there will ever be npcs to talk to ><
This could be absolutely brilliant if implemented correctly. The possibilities for blueprint-only machines are near endless...there could be a whole tech tree, even.

AWW YEAH!!!!!! I WOULD LOVE BLUEPRINTS THEY SEEM LIKE A GREAT IDEA you could make machines to make make these things like an auto miner in a quarry this could mean easy without the dangers of should give you

I like the idea but maybe tone down the tech a little bit, i doubt we'll be seeing speed boats and jets in minecraft but there's nothing against stuff like actual trains, large sailing ships, an maybe larger plows driven by livestock.
actually the tech might not be too much. well maybe the speed boat was a bit much. With the steam engine being invented well before the jukebox this could all make sense. The drivable harvester and the power drill could run on coal that powers a steam engine. People who try to keep it "medieval" have to realize that you are basically being dumped in the middle of nowhere with no explanation of your situation. Now would an actual person skip straight to making rifles and explosives or would they make a pointy sword and armor first? You're basically going through the entire human technology tree over time so why not take advantage of the fantasy aspect of the game and advance into more interesting tech. Now I'm not saying there should be anything past the initial use of engines, but there definitely should be that. With that in mind maybe televisions will be cut out. The idea of a train (conductor's cabin + storage carts +caboose with fuel and whatnot) is actually a very cool idea :smile.gif:
The way I picture blueprints is more of a guide to help you in building.
You first build an item or block that lets you make the blueprint. When you click on that, you get a pop-up window where you can plot out your design, layer by layer. This would be simple and colour coded to easily tell what areas are walls and what are the empty space inside as you build. Part of making this design is making one cube of one layer the orientation point. When you have designed your blueprint, you are crafted a little block that looks like a surveyor's scope on a tripod. Placing this block will place the tripod down, representing the orientation block on the blueprint. When you right click on the tripod, you will see a transparent overlay in the real world of the blueprint you designed at approx %25 opacity (maybe constantly right clicking can cycle through various levels). Then you just build inside the projection. Walking more than 25 squares (or a number of chunks?) away from the edge of the blueprint will deactivate it from view.

I think that items should be created on the 3x3 crafting table, but then later put together.
Something that involved this you idea, like this: (making the image)
Could be very cool.
Something like this is what I am hoping for! I figure a system like that would excel at setting up traps
A few things I thought would be cool...
-Combine a dispenser and a box for a dispenser with a large capacity.
-Build a funnel like object to place over a chest so that any items dropped into the top of the funnel are placed into a chest or minecart with a chest that is under it.
-Traps and trigger components to lay out:
--Trigger: tripwire with string and lever, activates redstone
--Trigger: Discreet pressure plate (stone plate under whatever material to disguise it as, the pressure pad will have it's texture swapped)
--Trigger: Booby trapped chest (Small chest plus wooden pressure plate), activates when opened.
--Trap: Spike block made with three spears (a wooden pole (three sticks diagonally) with a dagger (one stone/iron/etc. and a stick diagonally) ) over a dispenser, triggered by redstone, can be oriented in any direction.
--Trap: Spiked deadfall log (log over log under rope (8 string with a stick in the middle)with flint pieces to each side of each log. Falls straight down like gravel when triggered. Does 1 heart damage if you walk into it, 5 if it lands on you.

Given the current technology in minecraft, it takes place somewhere in the 1800's. so no speed boats, but maybe a paddle boat. no jets, but maybe a zeppelin or hot-air balloon.

An interesting idea but I don't think it suits the style of minecraft at all really. I don't really know where the tripod scope would actually come from and the fact that it projects a kind of hologram to help you build is too much. However, I did like you build ideas. I was hoping to make the experience very raw just like all the other activities in minecraft. you have a piece of paper. that is all. you open it up like a map and figure it out yourself. sure there are minor details to make it work perfectly which need to be worked out. Details like if you were to build a boat on land how could you move it or if you could break down these large creations into single blocks for easy transferring. It's not complete but I hope it can be some time.
