So, we all know that putting half slabs down everywhere prevents mobs from spawning on top of them, but if you use half slabs for the floor boards on your base, it causes many odd things to happen such as placing a chest on a half slab will cause it to "float" along with... . Well, pretty much anything.
Even you float while walking on half slabs, which I find quite annoying.
So, my suggestion is this...
Make half slabs so that items, when placed upon them, will appear as of they are actually on the half slab, and not floating.
I don't know much about coding, but I do t think it would be too difficult to do this.
I definitely support this all the way. I've had this problem a few times in my early days, and I never use half-slabs as a floor anymore. This should definitely be put into Minecraft!

Right-click slab on a top half of a block that's next to it, so it appears to be a normal block on the floor.
This will be VERY complicated to make as essentially you'd need to subdivide the grid into 8 smaller blocks and allow 'blocks' to merely be a combination of 8 'sub-blocks'. It will bloat file size too unless it is done well.

I do see how it could be tough to do the change, for this to happen.
I don't do programming, but I know they could do this.
As the last two people who pointed out above me said, it will be extremely difficult, but with M$ buying minecraft, there might be a lot more going into the game anyways.
See, it looks the same as planks in floor. Do it yourself.
Btw I have Minecraft PC.
What I think he was agreeing with was that is look horrible because they float if you have the half slab on the bottom. Now place the half slab on the bottom, and place a furnace on top. Now that would look horrible.
and that is against the purpose of the OP's initial post:
(It didn't quote your entire post.) Now, it may prevent mob spawning, but what if you want a dark adventure map, that doesn't have mobs spawning in it, just for the map to be dark? With out the "Magical Anti-Mob" properties of the half slab, how will you do this? Peaceful? No, that will make it so that you can't die from hunger, and what not.
Also, placing torches everywhere makes the mobs go away, but it looks horrible. There's glowstone too, but that takes a while to actually obtain. Mining obsidian, or placing water on top of lava in the shape of the portal does work, but still takes a while to do just to obtain some. I also think glowstone looks like complete crud. (Don't want to swear lol.)
Doing so would basically require Minecraft to be rewrittten into half meter cubes, instead of full meter cubes. Most blocks would still take up a full meter, but they could be placed half a meter apart etc.
Not that there's no reason to do so, various visuals with half slabs, stairs and flowing water may well be improved if this is done. However I don't think there's enough of a need for Mojang to implement such a fundamental change yet. Those issues are mostly just aesthetic. Also there's the issue where if we get smaller units for block placement, people will soon want smaller blocks, quarter slabs, etc and then the whole problem is here again just at a 1/2 scale. I think it's reasons like these that Notch regretted adding half slabs to Minecraft in the first place.
