I think it would be rather swell if there were more mysterious things to be found underground, an example of these mysterious things could be various forms of schematics that unlock the ability to craft new devices.
Examples of things to be built with schematics.... :
Boiler: Central steam production unit which can be used to charge up steam powered items, (must be fueled with water and coal but uses them slowly, you could possibly lay a piping system that feeds water into the boiler).
Steam Drill: A drilling device that can cut through stone more efficiently than an pickaxe and must be recharged at the boiler.
Spotlight: A placeable light emitter which can be aimed from atop high mountains in the night to scope out various wildlife and nocturnal critters.
Placeable Mines/Traps: Pretty much self explanatory, critters step on these and unsavory things happen to them.
Two things one how would this be crafted and two how do mines relate to the other things
the schematics would be found not crafted... and the things you make with them would be crafted with a likeness to their purpose...
They're related to mines because a steam drill would technologically fit in the world of minecraft (more than say a jackhammer) and it would be superior to a pickaxe in effectiveness... It would need a power source (the boiler). And traps although they've probably been mentioned are simply necessary and this would be an interesting method of discovering them
This is a singularly awesome idea. I congratulate you, as you are now one of the few people who can impress me and/or get me excited about an idea. However, I think that the schematics should be found close to the remain of a long dead miner, killed by some gruesome creature of the night. The skeleton would act as a spawner for some sort of cave mob. Perhaps this? viewtopic.php?f=1&t=54538 This would add a whole new level of complexity to Minecraft, and I sincerely hope it's implemented.

Awesome addition to the idea! I just think there needs to be more underground exploration motivation in the game

I agree. I bought Minecraft for the exploration, but found that the whole mining part was a bit neglected. It'd be great to see some plants and mobs exclusive to caverns. This is one of my first posts, so I'm glad you like my "addition".
