So may possibilities but the default should be the Steve skin and how would you able to change it? You said that a possible use was in Survival and because it involves using commands to spawn the 'player' in, it's cheating. So remove that unless if you're talking about custom maps.

I disagree that Steve is the default skin; it'll look too much like a regular player and could potentially be distracting. It's a tool more than a mob.
As for changing the 'player's' skin:
Quote from Bloodyghost9» The syntax could be /summon player {SkinOwner:Notch}. To use mob skins such as zombie, skeleton, etc you could say /summon player {SkinOwner:mob.skeleton} or something similar. Also, if you wanted the player to have health and be able to die, you could say /summon player {Invincible:0, Health:20} which would be 10 hearts (20 half hearts)
The idea is that you'd spawn it in and make anything that it will interact with/ trigger. Then if what you've made is to be used in survival, then you'd go into game mode 0. Its up to the player whether they'd use it in survival, I was mainly thinking of it in servers, role-play maps and testing.

This could REALLY come in handy, especially for people who create Adventure maps and have more complex fun with Creative mode. It may also come in handy for some servers for purposes such as minigames with AI and etc.
Good idea, though AI should be a bit higher. Simple AI, but higher, maybe. My idea is that the 'player' can have AIs ranging from nothing (it just stand where you summon it) to quite complex (chasing mobs, running from mobs, pacing, wandering, attacking) Why not? This isn't a lol feature, as mobs react to the 'player' the same as they do to a real person, passive mobs are attracted to it if it holds wheat, carrots or seeds It should have just low default AI, but yes, higher AI or just simple any AI preferred should be possible by commands.I'll have to adjust the OP, but my idea is that by default it has no AI. So, for example, a player with AI 1 might just wander, while a player with AI 2 might do something different to spend their time? Like it.Exactly right. Do they collect drops?I haven't thought of that at all. One one hand it could be OP if you set up several wanting around your farms, yet you'd have to use cheats to get them in the first place. On the other it could be a cool RP feature where you send a servant to collect something. Much rather, though if the skin was default Steve or Alex, and they could fit it in with the command. Simply, maybe, a 1 for Steve and a 2 for Alex somewhere in the command? The reason why I have the boring grey skin is that the 'player' is first and foremost a tool, a blank template to customise how you like to suit your map. If it was Steve/ Alex it'd already have some feeling of personality and background

This could be good in adventure maps as a demonstration for example in parkour maps.

My Avatar is a Dalek, therefor your argument is... EXTERMINATED!!!
You know who can tell me something I already know? Me. All the time. I'm really good at telling me stuff I already know. I don't need help in that department. I don't know about others, but I can't imagine I'm alone here.
I don't know, it's up to what people prefer and the 0.000000000001% percent chance Mojang notices this. I'm only assuming here, but the coding for breaking/ placing blocks through commands could be really finicky; first you'd have to specify which 'player' you want it to do (more difficult the more there are), then you'd have to say if its to break or place, then the coordinates of the block.
Agreed

Is there an official mine craft sub-reddit that this could go in? I don't use reddit ATM, so I don't know the best place to post like you suggest.
Question - should the 'player' trigger endearment if its head is looking at them? I think so as mobs react to it exactly like a real player.
/r/Minecraft or /r/MinecraftSuggestions would probably do

My best suggestion:
Mobs actually being varied???
