It is in relation to Dwarf Fortress, but it should still apply here, since they're talking about real life.
I think the suggestion to make it as strong as iron, but more durable is a good suggestion, but there should be some way to make it harder to get, otherwise iron tools will become obsolete. You'd still need iron to make steel however.
Honestly, I have no idea why Runescape and WoW (don't quote me on that, I've never played WoW, someone told me this) made bronze weaker than iron...I blame them for most of the misconceptions.

this is true. i also blame runescape and wow for the misconceptions
Perhaps for the sake of making things both efficient from the item count aspect and realistic from the performance aspect, we consider something else. Alloying temperature. I suggest we come up with a recipe for a second level furnace; a forge. It requires more/better fuel and is made of, say, all steel.
With this item, we can extend the various materials a bit further and design it to take two or three inputs (for future recipes) and perhaps several fuels. Heck, we could even make it more like a 3x3 sized item (Built like the nether gate) to imply it's uber-ness compared to the regular furnace.
Tin + Copper = Bronze (stronger than iron, yes)
Iron + Coal = Steel
Perhaps redstone will serve as a reasonable fuel to alloy things? This would increase the rarity and cost a bit.
Maybe we could come up with some interesting items by combining rare Nether elements with redstone or diamond? Or maybe +1 style weapons by gilding them with gold to make gold more useful?
I think Notch needs to consider expanding the block ID by one or more bits.... ;-)
To make it a bit less overpowered, how about you first have to smelt enough copper and tin to make a block of each, then combine that? (9 copper + 9 tin = 1 bronze).
Good idea. yet 9 of each to make 1 bronze is maybe too much? how about 4 instead of 9 to make a block, or else the amount of Copper and Tin mined would be sky-high.
So, maybe use 4 instead of 9? (crafted like the brick block, 4 in a square) It doesent need to be too common, or else it would be boring to mine at the end? maybe about as common as coal, or slightly more rare.
Pretty much this for me.
I'd like it if you made bronze tools green. (it isn't realistic but style and quick identification is key here and they look way to similar to wooden tools right now.)
wow this is amazing! this actually happens to go perfectly with my oil idea (link in my signature).Anyway I really like it and I hope it gets implemented in-game.BTW, would you mind if I include this in my idea about oil?

I have a solution. In real life, bronze fell out of use because the tin trade became horribly ****ed over. We could abstract that away by having copper be quite common, not much rarer than coal and just a bit better than stone for tools, but have tin be relatively rare, maybe rarer than iron. Also, it should be noted that bronze for weapons is typically only 10-12% tin and the rest is copper. Therefore we would have a common resouce with high demand for bronze making and a rare resource with low demand. It could be required that you make the COPPER into a block but not the tin, and this would give you one bronze block. It's somewhat realistic and also balanced.
1. bronze isnt better than iron.
2. if they are both as common as coal..why would they be better than iron?
3. what we need is another ore between iron and diamond, and this doesnt seem like a good one.
at best this would be between stone and iron
Your tin looks a bit yellow-ish...
I made this same suggestion (within a big suggestion), you can use my tin block if you want it.
It looks a bit more realistic to me.
I'll upload my version of copper as well.
If you decide to use them, give me credit. lol

Easier to find then iron and is better then iron... over powered? You would never need to use iron weapons, tools, or armor then because it's much more rare. Also iron was favored over bronze due to it being easier to find. So if anything at least one of the materials should be rarer then iron.

I just put a fade to it, lighter and darker in some places.
Pretty simple actually.
Brass is made from copper and zinc. Zinc is found with other metals in ores. So maybe copper could also drop zinc (unless it could be made a byproduct of smelting copper)?
Brass is largely used in decorations and in bullet shells.
Edit: Also, with regards to bronze, isn't bronze used in SCUBA gear or something?

Good point... *Edits post*
Both copper and tin is found in so large consentrations that getting 3 or 4 ingots per 2 ore makes more sense.
...what? Did you expect something funny?
Go here and scroll down a little bit to the long post about the differences between iron and bronze, it explains it perfectly.

That way, bronze or tin ingots could be used for other things.Bronze, specifically, for circuitry.
