Before you begin the arguement of "It doesn't fit the timeline," stop to consider that perhaps minecraftia has a different timeline than Earth, and on top of that, Zeppelins somewhat fit into the feel of minecraft--much more so than if I asked for helicopters, jetpacks, airplanes, and the sort.
Last and certainly not least, this is an idea that popped into my mind and seemed to be somewhat reasonable, but I am completely open to constructive criticism and debate over the subject. I'm not Notch, and I'm not a programmer. If it cannot be done, then that's my mistake for posting this.
Onto the idea at hand-- A coal powered zeppelin (A extremely costly form of transport)
The zeppelin would be made of several other craftable components, all beginning with items that already exist in Minecrafia (Leather, string, wood, iron, coal, and furnace)
I'm not much of a designer, so I'll leave it to the people in charge as to how this could be build (How will the frame look in 3x3, how will the leather be made into "sheets" that will be stretched over the sides, and how it will piece together around a centerpiece furnace)
Keep in mind, the zeppelin, like many other things in the game, doesn't entirely make sense.
Pros and Cons of the Zeppelin (In-game, not pros and cons of it being added)
Pros:
-You can see a breathtaking aerial view of your map
-Faster than running
-You can fly over mountain terrain
-Perhaps torches could be placed on the final product to light it up a bit, maybe even with a large centerlight that could be crafted out of a torch and glass/iron/diamond depending on how hard Notch feels it should be to get a well-made zeppelin.
-Fun to fly around with some friends in SMP
Cons:
-Consumes coal in the furnace roughly 4x faster than a furnace would consume goal while in regular use (Making glass, stone, ingots, and the sort.)
-Long and costly process to build
-While it is faster than running, it's inferior to the speed of the Nether (Perhaps having it only move around 1.5*Player Speed?)
I'm aware this has been suggested before, but all of the threads I saw after I searched it presented it much differently than this, so I believe it's worthy of it's own thread.
Thanks, and remember constructive criticism is appreciated!
Edit: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9987 (A much more refined version of the idea that I didn't notice before posting this. Check it out.)
How much coal would it use compared to a powered minecart
Much, much more. (Both because 1 coal powers a minecart for around 4 minutes, and because this is supposed to be extremely costly since it's a multi-seat, flying transport.)

Hmm. Shame that I spent 10 minutes typing this >_>
