-Golden tools and armor give off light
-Golden torches that are better than normal torches (or maybe use gold for lanterns)
-Golden blocks repel monsters and attract animals
-A golden/redstone cave finder (would ping when near a cave and get louder as you got closer)
Let me know if you like these ideas and post your own!
EDIT:
thanks for all the input. I have remade the list based on what I have seen in the thread
-Golden tools are better than iron and worse than diamond
-Gold is used in lanterns
-A golden/redstone cave and dungeon finder (gives off one noise when near a cave and another when near a dungeon)

I like the second, but not so much the first here. In particular, using gold for lamps/lanterns, though I suspect they'll use Iron instead, if they actually do get implemented.
-Golden blocks repel monsters and attract animals
This might be a little too much, but the attracting animals part definitely could work, especially a gold block with a torch on top -- maybe it could be a way to keep animals near a spot and away from your crops?
-A golden/redstone cave finder (would ping when near a cave and get louder as you got closer)
Ambience already tells you when are near a cave, but perhaps a gold compass could alter the compass properties to point out large mineral deposits (might detect coal, iron, gold, redstone, and diamond; but not obsidian) or to point towards the nearest portal while in the Nether?
Gold is a little under-used, I agree, but the difficulty is coming up with good ideas for how to use it. Some, like the tools giving off light, are a little silly, but it would be nice to have more actual use for gold than the clock and gold blocks for construction. Perhaps Gold Ingots could make Gold Slabs using the same recipe as a stone slab? 3 gold ingots across - 3 gold slabs?
Maybe Gold could be strong against Zombies and Skeletons, but otherwise be equal to wood/leather?

All those ideas seem a tad silly to me except the cave "ping"er.
I think you're on to something there! Definitely would help in random mining.
I can see the layout looking something like a golden compass.
Good idea on that one! I approve!
A few of mine are:

gold torches would be torches coated with gold that are brighter (minecraft isn't realistic) or have gold used in lanterns

Repelling monsters seems unfair, because half of the game is about surviving monsters. It's supposed to be a bit challenging.
