I've been hearing rumors that Notch is going to make it so torches can go out. This is ridiculous. It would make our caves mob infested, houses hard to see, and anything else that you might think. Please. Don't do it, Notch.
I see no problems with torches going out. It will probably take a few in-game days for a torch to go out, so it shoudln't be too much of a hassle. Just go through and relight them with flint and steel, or just make new ones. It isn't that hard.
This is exactly why I think people should READ more and actually investigate into things.
First off, this is OLD HAT. This was a planned update on haloween. It never came through, partly because Notch is a silly. Or a LAZY, depending on who you believe.
Second, a topic title all in caps is never favourable. Just saying.
Thirdly, if you did any research at all, you would know that when the update is patched in, all existing torches would turn into lanterns, and lanterns would last forever. Torches would go out after an indetermenate period of time, probably based upon your difficulty, and lanterns would be made of a material, possibly from the nether, that is harder to get than coal.
So hush with your alarmism, and remember: Research. Because there's already and ENTIRE THREAD dedicated to this sort of talk.
How in the flying FUUUUUUUUUUUU- are we supposed to get to the nether without infinate torches? You try mining to within the bottom 10 blocks of the Earth within about 6 minutes or however long they'll last. NEAR IMPOSSIBLE!
Or 1-2 hours, as is more commonly speculated. You can easily get to the Nether in an hour, if that's what you're working towards.
And they may not require glowstone to make anyways, it's just speculation.
And Notch may add other easier light sources like campfires when finite torches are implemented.
So DON'T JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS! And also, this has got to be the 10th thread I've seen on this subject, it might be nice to use the search bar and just bump an old thread if you're not moved by any of the arguments within.
It's true that people should read more, because I also know that this isn't happening. It would be nice though, if Notch put in the mod that was made for moving light from held torches into the actual game programming.

Should we fail to answer their calls for help, we shall live in a world where creepers are afraid to give hugs. We must liberate them!
I like how people say "well, you just have to go and relight them with flint and steel every now and then, quit whining" but don't stop to think "how am I going to relight a torch in the dark", "how much time am I going to be spending running up and down my torch lines keeping them lit so that I am not constantly walking into ambushes", and "why/how does this actually make the game more fun?"
You are complaining about how torches will work even though no knows how they will work.
Torches will be fine. They will never, completely go out, they will still give off a little light. And you can relight them. They could last 7 ingame days or 1. no one knows.
You guys need to read, and stop flying off the handle based on your assumptions.

Muncher is right, listen to him, he can cure the blind and make paraplegics walk.
I'd be fine with it.
Hopefully the torches would last at least a couple of in-game weeks and would grow dimmer each day.
Torches give of 14 light? Well that light level could decrease each day and you'd have enough dim light to see where to go with your flint and steel and you'd know when to relight them.
Actually I'd prefer that they last longer than that. At least a month, so that you don't have to run around your base complex relighting torches very often, but a cave that you haven't visited for a long time will go dark in your absence.
I believe I heard Notch say that this a not a high priority anyway.
So overall, finite torches are simply a way to make the ENTIRE first few months of the game URGENT, which is something that many people would stop playing minecraft for, as it was not made and is not played to be an "urgent" game.
No. Minecraft is supposed to be urgent. It's supposed to be a very difficult survival game. Notch wants the game to be hard, and urgent.

Even if they dont let torches out i still want a lantern that works in your hand. i dunno if they planned for it to work in the hand but i want it to..and you can also whack with it but it only pushes back mobs.

I agree But i think they should it that they dont go out on peaceful that would make it fair for people who just like to build.

Well if they want to build they should go to creative....
But I do agree they should last forever on peaceful.

Just to dispel a bit of controversy, some people like the work for what you make formula that survival has. The tools, the peaceful mobs (or even the taking cover during the night.) You can't just shove everyone who likes to build into one corner.

Very much agreed. He also said if they went out we'd have to use flints to light them again.
FLINTS!
It's hard enough to find good steel, even if you can find gravel..
i dont mind if lanterns require something that we have already like glowstone but if it needs something like oil i will hate notch :happy.gif: coz i have an awesome home that is in an awesome spot that took ages to find while connected to a massive cave system with loads of evacuation points through hidden passages and through my mine while thourh portraits with a massive redstone circitry system connected to loads of traps
