It'd be neat for all the human(oid) mobs, but having them on other mobs would be... quite dumb. Ghasts wearing armor, no thanks, I'm good. I'm sure some of the not-so-humanoid mobs might get away with helmets, but even then, it's pretty goofy and unnecessary.
I know it's goofy, Minecraft has it's fair share of quirky features. Such as naming any mob Dinnerbone will render it upside down and naming a Sheep _jeb will make it glow the colors of the rainbow. Players enjoy seeing these funny features.

Comparing your idea to a couple silly optional easter eggs means nothing. Programming in every single mob to accurately use armor because "well it's funny" is dumb.
Meh. I don't even like for zombies to wear armor ! It's as cheap as hanging the name, texture color, hit points, and damage of a mob and calling it a new mob. I'm constantly wondering just were are the huge enslaved dwarven mines and enslanved gnome factories that mine and craft all that undead equipment ? lol
I'd rather we have new, rarer, tougher mobs or whom crafting and wearing armor makes sense, rather than mindless undead. Wth non-negligible drop rates, too. Instead after a while I get 1 zombie out of every 4 wearing armor around my base.
I don't see why not. Makes things wackey, and more possibilities. Though I think I like the idea of a spider that wears armor is dropping its chitin carapace, so a breast plate would be better, no booties. And how could a chicken not drop a breast-plate? Lol
I know I'm four years late in the party, but I definitely support this. The potential of this idea wouldn't be limited to a neat easter egg, a joke feature, or even one more gameplay feature. It could also affect mapmaking and command creations.
If a mob could render a helmet, it could also wear blocks and custom player heads. The armor mobs could wear would include dyed leather armor. You know how you can take a zombie/skeleton/zombie pigman/husk/whatever and put a head, armor and weapons on it so that it looks like a new mob? If this was implemented, the same could be done with many other mobs! You could turn a slime into a hopping dirt block, a cat into a baby tiger, etc. I know there are more efficient ways of doing this, but most of those that keep things mostly vanilla involve Optifine and/or resource packs, so it would be nice to have an easier-to-use alternative for users who prefer not to use the existing methods.
It would also be nice as a gameplay feature, though. You could equip armor on mobs you'd want to protect, such as villagers, cows, wolves and golems. At the same time, hostile mobs such as creepers, slimes and endermen with extra armor (saying this because Endermen can already wear helmets even if they don't spawn with them, iirc) would provide an additional challenge, while also rewarding lucky players with their armor when defeated. Maybe new types armor exclusive to these mobs could be added as well in order to motivate players to fight them.
Only issue I see is that there are mobs where player armor would just looks weird, such as spiders. Perhaps more armor shapes (wolf armor, spider armor, etc.) could be added, which could work similarily to horse armor. This would partially defeat the mapmaking utility, though. But anyway, I definitely support this idea.

Wow, that was fast. I hope you don't do this to every single person who doesn't support your ideas just so you can skip explaining yourself.
Don't be so quick to jump to those conclusions, I did mention that all the humanoid mob having this would be good.

Originally, he had it so they could wear a helmet.

I only support villagers having armour, because they won't fight and they won't run either.
