i think it's not a bad idea. It could be useful in SMP, and in SP it would help when the creepers come around. I am thinking maybe a password/passcode that you'd be prompted to enter upon right-clicking the chest? That way in SMP there still is some element of possibly being robbed if someone stumbles upon your chest, but they'd have to first crack your passcode. Not a huge fan of the key thing personally, it doesn't sound easy to code, and there is little to no element of danger. With a passcode, there would still be a reason to hide your chests, but they would be better protected from unwanted hands.
Im starting to think the same thing. Probably like a 4 digit pin.
Still need to take Adventure mode into account. Creators can put keys in chests that the player will have to find to unlock another chest or door to continue on in the game. Also keys are a little more authentic to an old school feel. Keys came way before combination locks.
...and hide my chests so there is no danger? I never have chests out in the open so there is never going to be any danger already, but I still want to be able to access them without having to worry about another play sneaking in and nabbing my resources while I am away or logged out. Having to keep a key on you, with the chance of loosing it adds to the survival element and gives risk to reward. A player can't just sneak in and take your loot but can kill you for it and this is much more bandit then griefer.
Also i like this key aswell. Mainly for your reason exactly, adventure mode. And maybe the key could possibly open an iron door. Hmm, IDEA.
PINCODE. As I said in my post. A key would be too complicated, and probably wouldn't work in multiplayer since they all have to be unique

Have you ever wondered if butterflies fart?
If they do fart, I bet the farts smell flowery.
I think flowers smell flowery because butterflies fart on them.
I like the Idea of having locked chests.
The following are my Ideas for different types of chests.
Limited unbreakable, player attuned chests
Allow for a limited number of unbreakable, keyed chests, maybe like 2 small or one large chest, or possibly a custom setting for the SMP server. The chest could only be opened by the person who created the chest. Both the chest and keys should be crafted with rare materials such as diamond, obsidian and records or saddles or some new rare loot only material so that they are rarer.
If you lose the key to your chest, you can’t open the chest again tell you are able to re-craft the key. A key crafted by another player would not work as it is attuned to the other player.
There could also be a clan based version of this chest where only people whitelisted could access the clan chest.
Unbreakable, combination chests
Similar to the keyed chest but anyone with (of who figures out) the combination would be able to open the chest. There could also be a limited number of these for each player. They should also be created with rare materials to make them unbreakable.
Durable, keyed and combination chests
Same as the unbreakable player attuned chests, but you could break into them only with a Diamond pick. I like the idea of having to use an unused diamond pick that is used up after the chest is destroyed. This is where I would keep my dirt on a PVP server.
Trapped locked chests
These would look the same as keyed/ combination chest but require a combination by other players. Not having the correct combination or breaking the chest would cause the chest to blow up.
Trapped chests
This would again look like a normal chest, but would blow up when opened by any player, including the person who made the chest.
Redstone activated chests
Another option would be to have a redstone activated chests that only open when connected to a specific type of circuit. The circuit could be activated many different ways; switches, buttons, plates, etc… whatever the player setup. However bypassing the circuit and just powering the chest would not open the chest (unless setup to do so.
An example is a chest that will only open with a redstone clock generator set to a specific speed. Or possible only when specific switches are enabled another type by a logic gate.
These could be worked around, but then the person who broke into the chest would deserve the reward of the items in the chest.
Edit: Corrected scentence structure in the Trapped locked chests section.

I love this! I might copy and paste this into the thread. Lol. But yeah. Thanks for the suggestion.
After finding two dungeons today, I was thinking it would be fun if the dungeon chests were locked with combinations / traps. This would provide continued suspense / danger after clearing the dungeon, and allow for the possibility of additional rare loot items.
