ah i see craft the key & chest and then that key works, only thing is though, WHAT IF YOU LOSE YOUR KEY! OHES NOES
Then you are ****ed.
See, a drawback. Now it's balanced. Keep it that way.

Wrong sir, wrong. YOU stole the fizzy lifting drinks and YOU touched the ceiling, therefor it must be washed and sterilized! So you get nothing! You lose! Good day sir!

How could you lose it? I mean if you die it's automatically in your inventory, so how? I mean you could drop it, but you probably wouldn't have it equipped, it would probably in your inventory.

Yes but wouldn't it be easier for Notch just to implement the same same characteristics of a steel door, as in using a switch, and convert it to the iron chests.

That is true, but that kinda totally removes the "non-theft" part...
People also seem to be forgetting the "adventure mode" the game will have in the future. Some way to lock doors and chests with keys will be a crucial element in designing the BEST possible experience.

How is it OP so make it so that people can't steal your sh!t? Honestly it is a kind of fun element, but also, it sucks ass when you have pricks who all they do is grief. Perhaps if it was a monster only thing, then I would enjoy building defenses and mazes such to defend it. But a player will just dig through anything built (Because in standard MC, everything placed, can be unplaced...)
The amount of "proud" griefers is such that instead of posting individual links from youtube, heres just a list of videos that match keywords "minecraft griefing" http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... efing&aq=0
Yeah, that is exactly what is wanted in SMP. That, that right there, is the point of SMP, nothing else, there is no other reason to play with friends than to ruin and steal each other's stuff.
As for keys, I still think that it would be easier and wouldn't take up inventory space to have combination locks implemented opposed to keys. And to "keep it balanced" don't forget the combo then.
Isn't a bad idea.
This might have been said before, but couldn't they just destroy the chest and get all stuff?
What if theres "protection" on it. Meaning you cant break it. Or it will have the strength of Obsidian. (I doubt people are patient enough, I mean it takes a few seconds with a diamond pick-axe, so yeah)

I still like the idea of keys. So maybe you can craft a key ring to allow you to hold many keys and all you have to do is use the ring on the lock and unlock it.

sounds cool in theory but in game couldn't they just break it open it would obviously have the best stuff in it if it was locked. Also they can use tnt or somthing like to break into it thats a good idea for a mod though.

I guess that could work, as in only TNT could break it or something.
just crack the chest open -.- , remember kids , if you can't open it crack it open!
It was a good idea , but i think the thing that we can destroy practically everything ruins it
I said that only TNT would break it in my last reply (The post above yours), also if the chest is in your house in would be counted as griefing, right.
I had a similar idea cross my mind about iron chest, my thinking though was more oriented toward the doors then a new 'key' feature, make it only open when powered by redstone. people can lock it themselves then. really worried about someone breaking in to your chest, put a 9 switch combo lock on it, want to make it so it can't be opened by dropping a redstone torch in front of it? dig a block down, and put a torch to turn off any dropped torches. keeps with the current system, and adds more uses for redstone locks.

It could work but i dont want it to complicated. But yea that could work.

Personally I think having a key would be more complicated then using redstone. You have to have the key on you, and whip it out when ever you want to open your chest, and what if you have two or three or even twenty chests, do they stack? Is there going to be a key ring to organize your keys? Losing your key *previously stated*
Why not have it be run off of redstone instead? You can keep it as simple as dropping a redstone torch or a pressure plate in front of it for when you just want a fireproof chest rather then a safe. You could make it as complex as you wanted for storing your diamonds (I've been partial to making a 9 lever lock, that is settable in game)
Customizable protection for the masses in other words.
Would also lead to more tempting traps which people seem to like the idea of,
i.e. iron chest at the end of a hallway, a iron pressure plate sitting in front of it, obviously there to allow the use of the chest, *steps on the plate* "zomg tnt trap" /facepalm to oblivion
