i like this idea, mabey it would have purpose in sp if notch added a theif-like enemy
that could be an idea, like a mob that wont attack, only run. It's main purpose is to steal, 3 items at a time, eventually your chest would be empty, if you hit it it runs away with your items going 3x faster than a human, when you kill it, it drops all your items. This mob can spawn anytime of the day and usually go in pairs. i dunno now it kinda seems useless. oh,well. I THINK THE CHEST IS AN AWESOME IDEA THOUGH.
the only thing is, how would you make keys specific to your chest...
Maybe if you make a key you have to right-click, if it's the first time, and it will only work for that chest. if you right-click again it will unlock it.
Or maybe you would have to craft it like this:

Have you ever wondered if butterflies fart?
If they do fart, I bet the farts smell flowery.
I think flowers smell flowery because butterflies fart on them.
Just so all of you know, that guy above me has posted something similar to this before me, but I haven't seen it until he told me to look it up. Thats the truth.
Did you look up "Iron Chests" before posting this thread?

Also if you could leave your comments on suggestions for my suggestion that would be great.
Ya' know like saying i think that keys should be crafted like this: blah blah blah
Why not make it only open when provided with a redstone signal, instead of a key, like every other incarnation of this idea I've seen thus far? It still allows you to build a combination lock, and makes stealing (though not impossible) harder.

I guess that would make more sense but i kinda wanna just keep it simple,ya know so that it wouldn't be to much of a hassle, love the idea though.

Well, it makes it a bit easier to code, and allows for more flexible opening systems (such as putting a lever at the end of a long dungeon to force the potential looter to survive it both ways to get into the chest) than a key being the only option. It just seems to be more "minecrafty."

but then it would be really really easy to get into... break the surrounding redstone put your own (one block long) to a lever, hit the lever, then access it... too easy... and i don"t play SMP... see it's that simple
i 1/2 support this idea... cause i don't play SMP i have no reason to have a locked chest

like my avatar? it's pretty cool huh? you want it don't you? because it's better than yours...
well... TOO BAD!
When I think of keys in Minecraft I think of it allowing you to assign a pin number when you craft the key and the lock. This way you can have multiple keys for the same lock or multiple locks. There should also be redstone locks as well so you can lock and unlock iron doors. The pin would essentially act as the structure of they key, the teeth and groves.

I like this idea a lot! One issue, I think it is sort of unfair to always respawn with something. So my idea is that on a crafting grid you could put a random amount of stuff down, and then a black block comes up (so Notch doesn't need to make random blocks for all), put that black block on a stick and you make a key. All keys look the same, but you need the special key combonation to unlock it. It's a bit harder for people, but it seems nicer in my opinion.
Ehhh, a lock just doesn't seem feasible.
Awesome, yes.
In all honesty I would think a combination lock would be an easier addition, and then the problem with losing the key isn't present.
However, as always, just break the stupid chest.
The redstone idea is possible, i've talked with people about a redstone combination lock (not freaking worth it). That idea results in a building the size of a mansion just for the circuitry, and god forbid you want it to be in a sequence.
A simpler version but not order specific would be a bit easier but still is a hassle to construct and is easily by-passed.
Even now, I could make a simple locking mechanism that opens the door to the chest room, which is circumvented by digging through the wall.
The only way as it stands or as it will be with this addition is a mod that turns certain blocks into unbreakable blocks, forcing people to use your "counter-measures". There is nothing in standard SMP you can do, that isn't easily beaten by a Pickaxe, Shovel and 64 dirt. Which can be accumulated within maybe 3 minutes from start to acquire, then it's just go find the chest.

Nope, but your chest thread wasn't on the list on recent posts, so..... But i guess i should've looked it up now that you mention.
