Intro:
For the idea read down.
Time for round two. I got 1 reply with my last idea, but that's fine I'm not expecting much.
Also if anyone knows the best and quickest way to learn Java so that I can start actually making working versions of these ideas, please send me a PM. Idea:
Laser Pointer. Spot light. Please ignore the word laser I should have never used it.
Crafted: = Redstone (Is there a redstone smiley? I can't see one.
How to Use:
Placable object like torch. Shoots a beam of red light out and away from it in a straight line. This would probably just look like a straight red line in game.
What is it good for?
It will save a lot of guess work when lining up things that you are building over distances.
Could also use it as a beacon of some sort I guess.
Possible features:
Could last a limited amount of time or have a limited range depending on how much coal you use. But I think it lasting forever like torches would be the best option.
The way it would work is that the torchlight is channelled through the redstone and out the glass. Redstone isn't all that realistic anyway so I can't see to much of a problem with this.
And yes the line would of course stop at any point something passed through the beam.

Using glass lenses to focus and concentrate a beam of light isn't high-tech at all. Not compared to using some "red stones" to make a clock or large scale circuit board. In fact I'd say it's less complex than a watch, probably on par with the compass.
High and mighty much? Show me a thread that the main subject is an idea about a laser level that is intended to be used to line up blocks at long distance and I'll concede.
So unless you are also complaining that the watch is too complex for the game and its medieval time setting I'm going to dismiss your comment.

Hypocritical much? Calling him high and mighty then posting that?
But anyways, I agree with him! I don't want laser trip wire or anything like that.

Muncher is right, listen to him, he can cure the blind and make paraplegics walk.
Can I make it perfectly clear however and I apologise for this in advance. I am not talking about a trip laser.
I am talking about something that emits light in a straight line so you can use it to line up something you're building with something else in the distance. Why can people not get past the trip laser part?
Why not just ask for a second type of redstone that destroys itself when walked on like the original redstone did? That would make a perfect tripwire, and fit the theme just fine.
Miro, to line things up you could just make a line of dirt between the things. Yes, a lens is not high tech, but Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation is.

When I first saw lava I was like "Wow, so going to make a moat with that right now". But then of course, I burned to death shortly after.

True, But that is like saying with my previous idea (A mountable telescope to see into the distance) that to see into the distance you could walk there.
And I know that Lasers are high tech if they actually are a laser but I felt that people would understand me better if I just called it a laser.
The possibilitie of creating a Uncoloured beam of light emiting device is actually aincient.
to construct a decive all you need is a light source, (the strength of the light source is errelivant)
and a Convex lens. (the time frame of which this was invented was 1248 (roughly)).
the light source will emit rays of light which will pass through the convex lense which will then refract
and then create a beam of white light.
this is well and truly druing the medieval times considering the medieval times were 1066 - 1486 (roughly)
also the clock we see in game is essentually a handheld sundial, which dose not exist, the actual evention of the clock with the minute hand resided in th 16th century, so techniqually the U-B-L-E-D is a completly plausible device.
sadly as humans we have flaws these are that most of us are stubborn, even when the truth is presented infront of us. I understand that many of you, who believe that this device is impossible will continue to say it is impossible... but the truth is.... its not.
Also on a side note a handheld sundial is almost impossible considering the difficulty to actually hold it flat and accuratly in line, is well pathetically insane.

Where are you getting your info?? Refracting lights off of mirrors are not a lasers. Lasers work by stimulating photons. They were considered top secret in the 1950's and no one in the medieval era knew what an atom was, let alone a photon.

If by "breaks" you mean "falls in" and by "beam" you mean "lava" then sure!

Hmmm I won't make that mistake again.

Spotlight =/= Laser.
Clock = Clock.
Clock =/= Sundial.
Spell check + capitalization = Good.
