Rather than my previous ideas, I will give a small one, and then leave it open to disscusion.
Ink: when obtained (how?) Could be crafted into 1 pen (how?) then, when combined with a book, would create a Tome, a recorder of progress, things like deaths, amount of each block gathered, amount of each item crafted, days surivied, how many of each mob slain, etc. would be counted
Tomes would have pages, which could be added to with paper (how?) to increase amount of what is kept track of.
Tomes would have a different look than books
Tomes are NOT enchantable
Tomes could be locked (how?)
Tomes are placeable
Tomes can burn >=3
Any thoughts?

Why not just make bookshelves functional? Is there some reason that a completely new item is necessary?
This would be mobile, and it could instead act as a journal of sorts, so you can leave messages, books, remember stuff, and for looks.
Now, I DO like the idea of leaving messages on tables or walls without using a sign, however I think giving paper a use (other than just crafting books) covers that. Qwill has the right idea, I think.

bookshelves could have massive amounts of space? but would you rather have a large amount of place then leave room, or smaller but portable room?

I understand that, but there are already books in the game, why not just suggest to alter those? The way this is worded makes it seems like a whole new thing. Anyway, the only thing I'd ever use this for is aesthetics, which is all bookshelves are good for now anyway.

? alter? as in change their use?

Yes, alter. Books only make bookshelves. Maybe they could be placable and do precisely what you want tomes to do.
