I'm a pretty avid redstoner, and earlier today I realized that I have waay too much gunpowder.
Right now, the only legitimate use for gunpowder is for TNT... why not give it another?
So, gunpowder wiring. How would it work?
1. Lay down gunpowder like redstone.
2. Activate with flint and steel. You can activate it anywhere.
3. The fire catches the gunpowder "wire", and the flame slowly moves down the wire.
4. Now, what can the lit gunpowder do?
5. Lead the gunpowder to TNT. The TNT should go off almost instantly- Faster than redstone sets it off, at least.
6. Lead the gunpowder to a pile of gunpowder. How does that work? Basically, it's like snow layers. Place down one gunpowder, then keep right-clicking it to add more. The more gunpowder, the bigger explosion.
Nice idea! But when you pile some gun powder, instead of and explosion, I think it should create a flame depending on the size of the pile of gunpowder. For an explosion, there's already TNT.
How about gunpowder wire can put flame able materials on fire ? for example : connect some wiring to wool and use flint and steel on it , it will burn the wool . then it doesn't have the same use as redstone .
Being a nerd is nothing to be ashamed of. Nerds rule the world! Who invented the internet? Nerds. Who created personal computers and smart phones? Nerds. Who made every video game you've ever played and ever will? Still nerds. Who sent probes to distant planets? Nerds, nerds and more nerds! I'm a nerd and I'm proud.
What about if gunpowder was invisible until it's been lit. When I say invisible I mean probably about as visible as a tripwire. This could give gunpowder a use to map makers or as a way to make a trap that would be potentially less obvious than redstone.
I'd actually thought of this too, a wiring that is not instantaneous, is single use, and instead of triggering machines, it's used for detonating explosives, i'd thought of layering up to 4 times myself, the more layers you add, the faster it burns, and the thicker the powder trail gets. it could be lit from fire adjacent to it, or from flint and steel directly, also, putting 9 gunpowder together for a 'powder keg' block which explodes instantaneously, but in a smaller explosion than a TNT block,
I like the idea. It would create a lot of new possibilities for traps that people can make. Gunpowder could be placed in an infinitely expansive line, unlike redstone which has a limit of 15, and each second/20 ticks it lights the adjacent gunpowder on fire if lit. You could also use a dispenser to light the gun powder with a flint and steel!
It's not a duplicate if it's single use. Also, no repeaters necessary. I don't like the pile-up thing though. But I do think this is quite a nice idea. However, gunpowder ignites incredibly quickly. It wouldn't exactly be a slow cartoonish burnup.
It would achieve the same effect as redstone, Thus, duplicate. All we would "get" out of this idea is a one-off slower version of redstone. If you need a repeater, then you are probably doing it wrong anyway. Further, you can use rails with a TNT cart and an activator rail if you need to extend the distance, for whatever reason.
Everything the OP has suggested can be done already, and far easier, faster, and more effectively.

Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.
The issue isn't just "Is it duplicate" but giving more options, and a way to use Gunpowder.
I mean, chicken and beef are duplicate, so is baked potatoes and carrots. But it's about options, and having uses for things.
They replenish different amounts of hunger. And they give reason to have farms. Runpowder has a major use already. Making gunpowder "wire" isnt a major use and is a downgrade from redstone.

"Gunpowder already has major use."
Sure, if you count taking up storage space...
"Making gunpowder "wire" isn't a major use..."
Let's apply your "carrots and potatoes" logic to this.
1. Gunpowder "wire" is single-use; Redstone isn't.
2. Redstone needs repeaters for going on longer than 15 blocks; This doesn't.
3. Redstone is mined, for the most part; Gunpowder is dropped from creepers and ghasts. (Excluding witches, because they drop both)
4. Redstone is activated with a lever, button, tripwire, redstone torch, etc; Gunpowder is activated with fire.
Need I go on?
"...and is a downgrade from redstone."
Calculators are a downgrade from computers. I mean, look at what computers can do-- Next to everything. What can calculators do again? Add numbers? Haha, how useless!
Sometimes, downgrades aren't always a stupid idea.

1. This makes it worse to use. Its a 1-off application. So why would I opt for this over redstone?
2. What application are you using TNT/fire ad longer then 15 block distances that would make gunpowder "wire" a better option?
3. Yes, and Redstone is WAY more plentiful then gunpowder. So how is gunpowder "wire" a better option?
4. Because a lever/button/redstone torch is so difficult to make? Arguably it is the less expensive option because flint/steel requires an iron ingot. A redstone torch just needs a stick and some dust. A lever needs a stick and some cobble. Redstone isn't exactly hard to get, and takes up WAY more space then gunpowder.

Calculators are the precursor to computers, cheaper to make, and highly portable. They are being phased out thanks to cellphones, but still. They are not a "downgrade" as they came before computers.
In this case, your downgrade of an idea IS stupid and pointless. Redstone is the better option in every situation you mentioned.
now now you guys calm down! your starting a flame war!
Anyways i support and can redsone its self light stuff on fire? no? well then looks like its not that great
What are you setting on fire that you need to be so far away? Why is slapping whatever it is with a flint/steel and running the other way not an option?

Especially if it could light things on fire around it.
Like he said, it's already a feature, as redstone. I don't think we need a duplicate feature. Do not support.

YOU CAN FREKIN LIGHT IT ON FIRE BUT IN ALL HONESTY
Ahrg!
i have no idea how to say this except for HATERS GONNA HATE AND IF U GONNA HATE DO IT SOMEWERE ELSE
