I still hate all the ideas, seriously if you cant get off your ass and find the minerals/supplys without 'salesman help' then don't play minecraft. Salesman would make the game **** it would almost entirely eliminate the purpouse of mining.

IF IT IS A BARTERING SYSTEM THEN IT TAKES JUST AS MUCH WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A salesman wouldn't make the game ****, I don't think you understand the idea.
You have 500 sand that you DON'T NEED and the salesman has 20 diamonds you CAN'T FIND so you trade. You still did work, but this time you got something you WANTED.

Once again, 100+ of a common material isnt worth 's. Sand is useful for glass... So I dont see why you dont need it, I could make a sick greenhouse with that.
And yes, a salesman would make the game crap, the time it takes to look for diamonds is alot funnier because I can find spectacular caves. Not just finding a merch and get my crap in 5 seconds.
Quests: No.
Shops: What the hell?? I can get **** for free by mining.
Currency: No need. Once again, I get crap for FREE.
If you want a large quantity of something and don't have time to mine, buying from a shop would be quicker. And doing quests you could get harder to find minerals for regular ones like stone or dirt or coal.
Wait... Did you just imply that dirt, coal and stone is hard to find? LOL.

It's not. It gives the player and incentive to dig up 500 dirt to trade for diamonds, instead of digging down to the core for diamonds. the two are not equal in danger, or the amount of work.

Currency doesn't sound good, but I've always had this idea (and I'm pretty sure I've posted it like 2 times before) on how trading could work.
It could be a random person running around, but it would be much better if trade was implemented for Pigmen villages when they are added (or any other neutral mob village)
Basically, you go up to a pigman (not a zombiepigman, mind you) and you pull out something they might value a little. No dirt, not cobblestone or sticks. Things like string, tools, seeds and food would be fine. By "pull out something" I mean you put equip that item to your hand, so that you are visibly holding it from a 3rd person view. A pigman might take notice of your item in hand and will approach you (by following you until within a relatively small range, maybe 3-4 blocks away) with an item that they want to offer you in trade for yours.
This way, there would be no talking involved, just a silent interaction that takes no words or special actions into effect.
If you agree to the trade they're offering to you, you can drop the item on the ground in their direction, or maybe even directly onto them (just in case you walk into a village and have 3 different offerings for whatever you're holding) to get them to drop what they were offering in your direction, and then you can pick it up and walk your separate ways.
To keep trading not completely uniform (and to give the illusion of them having working lives, where they need and don't need different things at different times, even though they would probably just despawn all the time anyways) the pigmen would often offer different things for you items. I mentioned earlier that you could walk into a village and have 3 different pigmen offering you 3 different things. This could work by having each individual pigman randomly select an item from the list of things for the item they want. There would have to be a number system so that if you're holding a gold ingot, you couldn't only choose from 1 flint or 1 gunpowder from 2 different pigmen, it would be more like 5 flint and 2 gunpowder. Numbers wouldn't have to be fixed either, it's all slightly random, but within fitting ranges.
Also, not every pigman would want what you've got, but there would be a higher chance of getting a pigman's attention if you have a rarer item. Really, walking into a town with a diamond block in your hand is gonna attract quite a few pigmen.
As for quests, I don't know how that would work. Notch once mentioned using coal or something similar to draw on walls, though. Maybe pigmen could draw silly cave-man sketches of items they would really want inside a house, like a diamond or something. I don't know, that's might not work out too well. Notch has also been asked about quests, and said he would want them to be done randomly, and not preset.
The currency of mine craft would, if it was logical enough, fail. If I give 10 people 1 gold bar each, it would be worth alot right? Say I give them all 100 gold bars, then, 1 gold bar would be cheap and if people can go get more for FREE, the economy would fail and it would be the 1930's all over again.

No it makes the player dig 500 iron and trade it for diamonds or coal for diamonds....its not like 1 dirt = 1 diamond..also he is not always there so your wasting your time
Yes, a human other than yourself in an uninhabited world is MUCH more illogical than monsters coming out of a dungeon. It is a paradox. A self contradictory statement. It makes no sense at ALL even in a fantasy. Monsters in a fantasy make sense. This however, does not. The IDEA of Minecraft is that you are ALONE and have to SURVIVE on your OWN. Get it now?

Bull ****. Say 64 dirt sells for 1 gold. Diamonds cost 30 gold. It's much easier and safer for me to go dig up 1920 dirt, then dig down, risking monsters, lava, the void, falls, and perhaps not even finding diamonds. Then I could sell my 1920 dirt and buy my diamond.
boom minecraft just got ruined.
Also I agree with the above post.

No, a smart notch wouldn't make diamonds traceable for dirt. Dirt has no use and thus should be untraceable. It was more like digging up Lots of iron and trading it for diamonds.
Also what is up with the two not equal in danger bit? Are you kidding me? Life is full of things not equal. That and any smart person wouldn't even trade 1728 units of useless dirt for 1 diamond. Now, trading an equivalent amount of iron ingots + a few more iron (to make up for the "danger" level) for an equivalent amount of diamond would make it a fair trade.
In-fact, for 3 diamonds, an equivalent amount of iron one would have to gather is around 24 iron ingots. Yep, 8 iron pickaxes has around the same use amount of one diamond pickaxe. However, since you want to factor in "danger", let's say the required amount is increase by 50% rounded up. so that would be 36 iron ingots.
Or f you want to go by rarity and not by the strength of the items, 500 iron ingots for 1 diamond. Items of no use should not be trade-able. Items of different qualities should not be trade-able with items of other qualities. Items that are renewable should also not be trade-able at all.
If you say "oh but that removes the rarity and adventure for it!" well too bad as well. Things don't always work like that. If I gathered enough money, I can walk down the street to a jewelery store and buy some rare stones or even high quality gold if I got enough.
Also, muncher, you need to stop putting words in people's mouth. So do you Misterspork. Notch never said Minecraft was about surviving ALONE.
The official description of minecraft is to "Survive in a hostel word, build during the day and fight skeletons at night."
No where in there says survive ALONE. Stop building ideas of what you think minecraft is. Notch is even adding in villages. Some unfriendly and some friendly. You can even give stuff to the friendly ones. So much for being alone now?
Edit: there is mods for SMP and SSP that adds shops and bartering. They get positive feedback even if they are not overly popular.
Oh and here is something, Just since you dislike a something added to the game doesn't mean you need to use them. I dislike the Nether and think it is completely useless right now. doesn't mean I think it should be removed for the game. It adds a new side to the game as well as open future possibilities.
I propose a system of bartering be added to the game. Materials and tools could be worth a certain value and be traded equally. Like 1 diamond pick = 64 Iron or something. This new update would also introduce a new NPC into singleplayer called the Traveling Salesman. The Traveling Salesman will spawn at random intervals near the player and just wander around, if he isn't used within a certain amount of time he will wander off and come back later. The Traveling Salesman will carry coal, iron bars, crystal, maybe even tools and armor. Next up comes questing. I know this isn't WoW but it'd be lots of fun. NPC's could give quests like mine X ____ for me and you'll be rewarded. The rewards will be either special tools/armor or large amounts of a material. NPC's could also give quests like "explore this mine/area" or something. Anywho this is just a basic idea and it could use some CC. Be sure to drop in your two cents.
*EDITED*
