I propose a system of bartering be added to the game. Materials and tools could be worth a certain value and be traded equally. Like 1 diamond pick = 64 Iron or something. This new update would also introduce a new NPC into singleplayer called the Traveling Salesman. The Traveling Salesman will spawn at random intervals near the player and just wander around, if he isn't used within a certain amount of time he will wander off and come back later. The Traveling Salesman will carry coal, iron bars, crystal, maybe even tools and armor. Next up comes questing. I know this isn't WoW but it'd be lots of fun. NPC's could give quests like mine X ____ for me and you'll be rewarded. The rewards will be either special tools/armor or large amounts of a material. NPC's could also give quests like "explore this mine/area" or something. Anywho this is just a basic idea and it could use some CC. Be sure to drop in your two cents.

Plus, server shops are retarded. How can blocks magically appear in your inventory and how can you just throw money and get that block? The blocks are also unnatural. Server shops ruin RP style servers, if not most servers. It disables the great affect of supply & demand and it also disables the use of players making shops, hiring employees, and physically selling their items. This also relates to sign shops, which also ruin servers as well.
Traveling salesman - No.
The world you are in is supposed to be uninhabited by other ''humans'', or is thought to be from the beginning. Also, there needs to be a backstory of this salesman. I don't think the salesman would be a salesman because wouldn't he also think the world is uninhabited by other ''humans''?
Quests - Maybe.
The world you are in is thought to be uninhabited by ''humans'' but other people than yourself can wash up into that world as well. They will need to survive just like you and they might need help with survival. Still, the idea of it seems... iffy.

Maybe not server shops, maybe a traveling salesman would work better for MP as well.
The backstory for the salesman could go along with the NPCs that give quests. Oh yea, because a traveling salesman walking around in an uninhabited place makes SO MUCH LESS SENSE than a little flaming cage that shoots out zombies and skeletons. (herp)
Exactly quests could work, and the salesman could wash up along with the quest NPCs.
Quote from Diamond. U want it? »
quests would SUCK
shops would really SUCK
and currency will make half of minecraft quit
worst. ideas. ever
How would quests suck? They would be fun.
Why would a traveling salesman suck? Let's say you can't find any sand but you want to make an awesome lava pillar, and you don't have any supplies or tools because you just died, but oh! Who's that? A traveling salesman with all the glass you could want, and you just did a couple of quests so you have some spare money.
Sounds pretty cool to me.

You don't get it. The monsters are made to kill, and notch added dungeons to make the game more challenging and fun. This is also REALLY irrelevant to the traveling salesman idea.
Let me explain.
A traveling salesman, like the human in the game, has to develop some sort of logic. If most, if not all of the world is lacking humans, only 2 at most, why would he be a traveling SALESman. Who would he sell to if he did not know of anyone that lived in the created world? Also, wouldn't the idea of working together other than selling stuff to people for a living in a world filled with monsters that want to rape you be good?

I do get it. You're saying my suggestion is illogical, I'm saying the game in all it's glory is somewhat illogical itself.
If quest giving NPCs were added (I'm not saying they have to be HUMAN) then the traveling salesman would have a place in the world. People are greedier than you think. The traveling salesman could live in house and only come out during the day, so he wouldn't have to worry about monsters. And the NPCs who are tired of buying materials from a traveling salesman who sells things at an inflated price hire YOU (the player) to mine for them.
The logic is pretty sound.

Quests: No.
Shops: What the hell?? I can get **** for free by mining.
Currency: No need. Once again, I get crap for FREE.
If you want a large quantity of something and don't have time to mine, buying from a shop would be quicker. And doing quests you could get harder to find minerals for regular ones like stone or dirt or coal.

I dont understand what your saying, a shop that sells highly common resources?
I believe your grammar is failing.
Sigh, I see, you mean trading in the COMMON RESOURCES, for the RARER ORES. Still no.
I believe mining is alot faster then exploring.
Edit: GOD DAMN. I cant think today.

Let's say you mine 200 stone while exploring a dungeon. You meet an NPC that says "Get me 200 stone and I'll reward you!" so heck you don't need the 200 stone for anything, you fork it over. Next thing you know the NPC busts out with 20 *DIAMONDS, and now you're happy as **** and your work paid off more than it would have with that 200 stone sitting in your chest with the other 500 you have.
I don't see a down side...

Well first off:
Whats crystals? You mean diamonds? 20 diamonds? I doubt 200 cobble isnt is the same value as 20 diamonds.
Secondly:
Cobble stone is a great building material, unless 'crystals' are really useful, I wouldn't trade it in.
Why not just walk up to a player drop the items then they drop the items, trade complete.
I'm talking single player.

Sorry I meant diamonds. And with questing, maybe to an NPC 200 cobble is worth 20 diamonds.
Yes, but after mining for a week you have more cobble than you need.
Maybe YOU wouldn't trade it, but SOMEONE would. (me being one) lol.

I am really against currency, and quests depending on how theyr'e implemented could be fun but not if its like the typical MMO or rpg trash. if there ever are friendly/neutral npc's you can interact with I wouldn't mind a barter system. where they may be willing to trade you say 2 diamonds for 20 feathers so you gotta go out and collect stuff but cash makes stuff too easy. you just vendor all your junk and then buy whatever you want. its not challenging or interesting.

If you get cash from quests or selling things it wouldn't be too easy.
I suppose a barter system would be simpler though.
