Dispensers can use fire charges to shoot out ghast fireball attacks. What if they could also use the guardian laser attack? I suggest that if you craft together a fire charge and a prismarine crystal it produces a "prismarine charge". This would be a consumable item dispensers can use to shoot out the guardian laser. The beam would travel out in a straight line for up to 14 blocks, damaging the first player or mob it hits. It would take several seconds to charge up before dealing damage, and could be obstructed by blocks, the same as when used by a guardian. I think this could lead to some cool traps and defense systems. And I don't think it's overpowered, considering that you can already launch fire charges out over a potentially unlimited distance while this is limited to short range.
Would it lock onto mobs and players? It would be worthless if it didn't.
It would not lock on. That would be a little too powerful I think, especially if you have a whole bunch of them fire off at once.
It could still be pretty useful for traps and defense systems though. You could have a hallway that fills up with lasers if someone touches a tripwire. Or have a battle arena where lasers flickers on and off, forcing combatants to dodge them as an environmental hazard. Or have a bunch of lasers fire off the second a wither loses its shield. There are a lot of uses, even if it only fires in a straight line.
And there are a lot of uses, like making a dodgeable obstacle course, that are impossible if it locks on.

Dispensers can only dispense things in the the one direction it's facing,
So I'm assuming this type of defence would only be good for narrow halls, right?
I have a feeling such a thing can be easily avoided 'cause all you have to do is get out of its line of sight every so often. Maybe it could be more effective if it didn't need to charge?, like an instant lazer?
Why would we need a fire charge to make a prismarine charge?
To be frank, I would rather we could craft it without one.
I really think people shouldn't be making suggestions about prismarine and the other features from the 1.8 snapshots, they aren't finished yet, so you can't officially try to improve it.
I like this idea, but the laser should lock on to players and mobs.
Partial Support.
I'd actually prefer it go straight, rather than lock on, since it's more fun to engineer a system to aim your shot (perhaps using multiple dispensers) than have it auto-aim for you. Plus, dispensers can't auto aim with arrows or fire charges, so it just makes sense to keep that limitation of the device.

Usually I'd agree with you, but this seems completely removed from any ideas currently on the table. I wouldn't want to suggest changes to what Mojang is already working on, but a completely new addition seems okay to suggest.
I'd support this idea. However, would it be possible to have a very narrow range of the laser? It seems like having it be able to lose a target that quickly would mean that it would be easy to escape from that laser in any trap scenario by digging down or up one or two blocks.

I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this, which this margin is too small to contain.

Use this command with a command block. Have it activate from a pressure plate, and then it will shoot a very highspeed fireball that will hit its target almost instantly even at a fairly large distance from it, when someone steps on this trap.
/summon Fireball ~ ~1 ~ {ExplosionPower:2,direction:[5.0,0.0,0.0],Motion:[5.0,0.0,0.0]}
Change which axis the velocity numbers numbers are on to aim it (make sure the Motion and direction have the same values). Increase these numbers for even greater speed. At about 10.0 the thing is like a laser (which is what you were wanting). Increase the ExplosionPower for the shot to cause even more damage from the explosion that happens upon the fireball striking its target (and gives it a larger blast radius as well).
I think it should target, otherwise it would be fairly useless. Plus you would still have to refill it, and fire charge's are annoying to get. 50% support.
When a dispenser holding a Prismarine Charge is powered, it fires a continuous stream out of the dispenser, and if something hits the beam, it takes damage and the beam shuts off. If the dispenser is unpowered and the beam did not hit a mob or etc., it will not consume the Charge as not to waste the charge.
This idea seems very good, but the idea of throwing a prismarine shard with a fire charge doesn't seem very creative. Rather than coal, gunpowder, and blaze powder, how about prismarine shard, prismarine crystal, gunpowder? I think it would work better.

I think that it should be able to lock on mobs, but only if they are directly in front, or one block to the left/right of the dispenser.

Don't be afraid to report vague, wishlisty, or redundant (Maybe all three) suggestions. Leave a post saying what's wrong.

Diamonds to you!

agreed. if it shot into a straight line, the player could just move a little and doge. other than that it is a great idea
