My mind was just wandering and I remembered Notch saying a while ago that he MIGHT add beds in the future. So naturally, I began to think about all the possibilites and features that come with beds.
Dreams
This is by far my favorite feature of beds. There are three variants of dreams; "Good Dreams," "Neutral Dreams," and "Bad Dreams," also known as nightmares. They can be created based on weather (only if Notch adds it), monster sounds outside your house, the day's events, etc. A good dream is caused by positive events happening during your day. Finding diamond, building something, heroicly killing tons of monsters, snow falling (who doesn't like fresh snow on the ground?), etc. A good dream may reflect upon these events by either duplicating them in your dream or creating a similar scenario. A neutral dream is essentially just a normal day. In this dream your character may cut down trees, craft random objects, eat food, and perform other basic/minor activities. A bad dream, my favorite of the dreams, is probably the most prominent of the three. Rain falling as you sleep (again, only if Notch adds a dynamic weather system), monster noises outside your house, monsters outside your window, being wounded that day, dying that day, and well this list can go on longer than the others. In bad dreams you may be attacked by hordes of monsters, have your home blown up by creepers, be trapped in a lava-filled mine with the lava slowly building up, dying with an inventory filled with rare items, and the rarest occurence of them all; Herobrine appearing in your dream. The final dream-related feature may be going a little too far, but I like it. Occasionally we may have a dream that lightly predicts our future, and I'd like to see that happen in Minecraft. Not sure how, as it seems impossible, but it would be neat.
Crafting
Beds wouldn't be crafted as a placeable item. They would be crafted into multiple parts, and would be placed in order to make a customized bed.
A piece of bed frame (Functions as one half-block):

This creates four legs for the bed frame to rest on (Half-block, too):

A pillow (Also functions as a half-block):

And a blanket as the last piece (Acts as a type of block, with the same thickness as a painting):

Sleep
You activate sleep by right-clicking on the bed. Sleep will only initiate if you have all the parts of the bed put together, so placing a pillow on the bed won't make you sleep. While slumbering, your health is very slowly regenerated (a full night of sleep heals one or two hearts) so that this can't be abused. In addition, this may be odd, pajamas could be crafted the same way armor is. Pajamas will yield more hearts healed per night, and the more pajamas you have on, the better chance of more hearts being healed. They would, obviously, be crafted from wool. I think this whole bed system would give a better use to wool, since it is so abundant.
Not sure what you mean by "help." I'm not making this, it is just a suggestion. You can contribute by adding more ideas that I can include into the original post, though.
Beds could have one awesome use, whenever you save in a bed the world simulation CANNOT kill you next time you start the game.

So, you think minecraft is medieval huh? TNT(1863)/Dynamite(7 May 1867) and steel railways(1857) in medieval times? I call BS, sure there's armor and swords, but it's NOT medieval. Either give me a source or cram it!
Nice idea. Supported, although what would dreams really do? It's a nice little touch, but would they function as anything other than the obvious? Would you control the player as he went through the dream or would it be a sequence of small cinematics?
Definately not useable in multiplayer, unless when your asleep you are a character in a dream world. Then all the people on the server who had good dreams would be in the same cave completely made from diamonds, all the people with average dreams would be plonked in like some area from the world together and people with nightmares could be like in arena together with shitloads of zombies, or a diamond caves that slowly floods with lava and you have no escape.
This would mean that all sleep events would have to last the amount of time the night does..

Spiders be climbing in yo windows?
snatchin yo people up?
CLEARLY we have a... RAPIST in Minecraft. Hide yo sheep and hide yo cows and hide yo squids 'cause they rapin' errybody out here.
It would be all you'd have to worry about is getting beat to death by people wield pickaxes while you sleep(unless pvp is off).
What? That's nowhere near how this would have to work. With the whole dreams thing, this would have to work similarly to portals. Beds could be "occupied" and be unusable, but your actual entity wouldn't be there anymore.

Sounds good for anti beaten to death in your sleep, but how would that actually work?

I'm not about to defend the whole dream-bed idea. Sounds interesting, but I doubt it's very practical, even if it is possible. For the occupied thing, the bed could have a model of your character sleeping on it, and the bed and model would be indestructible. Not all that difficult. The portal thing would be the only way to have dream-states possible, especially in multiplayer; That would work as I said it, similarly to the Nether-Portal.
Say you die in your dream, well it could like eject you from your dream, like only half way of when you were supposed to help... possibly loose a heart or gain no hearts?

Yes, beds are flammable.
Support!
Dragons need to be implemented. No arguments.
never mind. it would horrify players.

Great idea, but you necro'd the topic.
I created this topic over a month ago, long before beds were confirmed.
