Up until recently, I had thought that Ender Chests' items were available to all players with access to an Ender chest. For example, if I put an item in, someone else could take it out. Hoppers would be able to insert and remove items from the chest.
Yes, I can be really noobish at times
However, I had seen a FTB (Feed the Beast) series on Youtube with the color-coded EnderStorage Ender Chests. I thought that this would be a very useful block in Minecraft. However, I made a few changes.
Crafting:
is obsidian
is any color wool
is an Ender Pearl
When the arrangement above is put into a crafting table, it will give you a Colored Ender Chest. The Colored Ender Chest will have nearly the same texture as a normal Ender Chest, except the lid is the color of the wool put in the crafting table.
Mechanics:
Each color of Colored Ender Chest will have its own contents, and will not beplayer-specific.
Some examples (even though its fairly straightforward):
Someone puts an item into a red Colored Ender Chest. Another person grabs the item out, using a separate red Colored Ender Chest.
Someone puts an item into a red Colored Ender Chest. Another person looks into a yellow Colored Ender Chest and finds it empty.
Someone puts an item into a blue Colored Ender Chest. A hopper hooked up to another blue Colored Ender Chest sucks the item out.
Hoppers can also put items into a Colored Ender Chest.
Potential Uses:
In an SSP world, one can do something like the third example above. This makes for easy mining, as neither your inventory nor your ender chest will fill up.
In a co-op SMP world, someone could mine while another could process the items thrown into the chest.
In a multiplayer minigame, each team could have a "community chest" with the different colors for each team.
In an adventure map, all players could place their scoring items or valuables in the Colored Ender Chest at each checkpoint.
That's about it! Tell me if the idea is too vague or incomplete, and definitely tell me any suggestions you have! Can't wait to hear!

why would adding color make ender chests better? Why do you think Jeb wanted them the color black? There are some things that would look good colored but ender chests are not one of them. Also if you want to distinguish them from other team's ender chests, you can just put a sign on them. no support

I'm getting the feeling you didn't even read the post. The Colored Ender Chests have a different function from the normal Ender Chests, as each color of ender chest has a different inventory. They are not player-specific, like normal Ender Chests. It's not meant to be aesthetic, it actually has a purpose.

Actually I did read this, all of it, and you wanted input, so I gave you some input. I think ender chests should be the way they are. I just don't see the point in it.
Adding more colors is pointless and you're supposed to have the one enderchest. Having more would be overpowered.
Could you be more specific on why it would be overpowered?

You could fill 1 enderchest with even more enderchests of different colors. Each of those would have their own inventory added to yours. The only limit to how many inventory space you would have is the number of possibles dyes there are in the game.

I think I understand. You're saying this would be overpowered in singleplayer, right? I think you're correct. If you have any ideas on how to fix this issue, let me know.

Would be to op you could tp every item anywhere ,for example you could build a melon farm collect all mellons with a hopper wich leads into a coulored enderchest wich tp's them into your house so i think thats not a good idea NO SUPPORT
That's a sweet farm. I don't see how it's OP, as Eyes of Ender and obsidian are hard to get...
Plus, you can do that with Ender Chests already, if I'm not mistaken.
Don't listen to the detractors, they appreciate neither balance nor game mechanics.
My issue with the mod is that it has too many colour combinations (very OTT) and it is not private, which in SMP can lead to players stealing items from others unless you remember to lock all your chests (they are public by default). Also by default it disables vanilla enderchest. My idea for Colored Ender Chests was not intended to replace the vanilla Ender Chest, just to be an addition as a whole new block.
My issue with Vanilla is that it is too limited, both in terms of storage and more significantly because it cannot interact with hoppers, etc.Same here.
So this idea gets partial support from me.
Only reason why it is not 100% is that I feel that SMP behaviour MUST be different by default to avoid griefing (I play on a public vanilla server, which is very good, but there are still issues with theft and griefing now and then).
My suggestion would be:
Vanilla chest remains and is totally secure in all circumstances, no hoppers, etc, only opens your inventory.
Coloured enderchests default behaviour is to link ONLY to other chests placed by the SAME player that places it.
Coloured enderchests default behaviour is to interact ONLY with hoppers, etc. placed by the SAME player that placed the chest.
A single public network could be accessed by shift-clicking on a placed chest with an item (would link that chest to the public network), break and replace to make it private again.
This gives each player their own set of networks and means that you cannot steal by either breaking and replacing a chest or by placing hoppers.
Opening a coloured chest shows the inventory of the player that placed the chest rather than the player who opens it, allowing players to share.
Public and private network chests could have a different edge border to distinguish them.
The usual server access controls (Grief Prevention, Lockette, etc) can be used to control access to trusted team members for private network chests.I'm no stranger to the fact that stealing is a big problem on servers, but I was going for more of the cooperative SMP when I thought of these. There are a lot of server plugins out there that make certain chests player-specific and such, so I didn't think that was needed. If this is implemented, servers are probably going to make plugins that do exactly as you said. Thanks for your feedback though!

Anything that has to do with any kind of block update (in this case, growing melons) requires the correct chunks to be loaded. That means you must stay close to the melon farm in order for the automation to work. If you want it to teleport the items to your house, then you're going to have to be there. It makes it only a little easier, as you only need to have the Colored Ender Chest be there instead of carrying the items back with you. If you build the melon farm close to home, you might as well wire it up the old fashioned way, with hoppers and normal chests.

While I was pondering KinzofDawn's point that in SSP the player would have an extended inventory of 27 times the number of Ender Chests, I came up with a new idea: The Ender Hopper. Since the Colored Ender Chest acts like a hopper, I figured this would be a good replacement for it.
I'm going to make a new post just for this idea. Here's the link:

How does filling an enderchest with more enderchests give you more inventory space?
Edit: I misread your comment, sorry. However, I still don't think it's overpowered because in order to have all that inventory space, you'd have to craft 27 ender chests (that's 216 obsidian and 27 pearls, not exactly easy to get) and every time you want to access your "super-inventory", you'd need to place down your ender chest, take all 27 chests out, and place them down too.
