Being able to create anti-water forcefields with things like signs and ladders is very useful, but always looks weird. Why not have a dedicated block for this purpose, instead of having people rely on an unintentional technical quirk? I suggest adding a "Membrane Block". This gooey block allows players and mobs to walk/fall right through it but stops liquids. Possible crafting recipe: Slime Block + Magma Cream, to produce a reddish gooey looking translucent block.
So adding an expensive-ish block that it's only use can be replicated by a sign?
No support.
It's a little more useful than signs/ladders because it doesn't need another block to support it. And you'd be able to move it around with pistons, so it would be handy for making floodgates.
Plus it's not really that expensive. Once you have a slime farm and blaze farm, these blocks would be cheap to create.

You can place signs on other signs. I can see what your saying about the floodgates, but It's still not enough of a reason for me to support.

You could make an entire wall or floor with these. A solid grid of signs is a very risky construction, since the entire chain will collapse if any sign gets broken. It's kind of like building a roof out of sand and torches.
I honestly don't see a need because it's already possible, but what you're after is looks, but I honestly don't mind the look of signs for this function, even if ill-logical.

Never bothered me since I do simple things with em, but I guess that could be problematic for this on a bigger scale.
Question though: why call it a membrane block? A membrane is a protective layer which prevents things from passing threw, being, in this case not only water, but you.

It's a barrier that allows some things through but not others (such as a cell membrane that permits nutrients to enter).
So the membrane block allows entities to pass through, but stops water and everything in it (such as the unseen fish you can catch) from leaking through.

Alright that makes sense now. I was just questioning its purpose, like, what would be classified as harmful / prevented to pass threw, and what would be classified as good / being allowed to pass threw, and by looking at the intended function, it makes more sense, but to a membrane, this job is a very specific and odd category for them :|
If you make it invisible and a creative only block I might consider, but overall it just doesn't fit the game.
I might have agreed with you a few months ago, but now we have giant slime blocks that behave in weird ways. I think it matches the game as it is now. And it's much more fitting to have a logical explanation why water doesn't flow than a ladder projecting an invisible forcefield.
I like the idea, but could the recipe perhaps be changed into something else?
I agree with EnderCreeper168, because a membrane block just sounds odd to me.
Perhaps if it was like a think mud block... or a bubble block? Idk.
Also if used in "water elevators" for mobs, would the mobs continually refresh themselves with air? can they breath within your "membrane block", like they could within a "ladder block" / "sign block" / "whatever"? If so then it's not a problem (even if ill-logical), but if not, then it'll be changing things for the worse (due to them suffocating before arriving from point A to point B ), so it's kind of a big deal to clarify if mobs can breath within them or not, just so they can function the same as what they're supposed to be an alternative to.
If you're going to make an alternative for something with more logic behind its functioning, make sure its functioning is the same logically, so please clarify this
& I still feel like we don't need an alternative if already possible, sure it could be more realistically possible &a there's nothing wrong with that!, but it's Minecraft, a game not based solely on realism.
I am half-support of this idea. The reason is, it is expensive, as MUSHROOMSOCK said. But, it is a cool idea. More uses for it, and I will think more about supporting it.
