Sure the moon gives off a light level up to 4, but there is no way of differentiating between "moonlight" an "daylight" because its only categorized as "light", and like BloodyPhoenix said: just invert a daylight sensor.
Can't you just invert a Daylight Sensor signal to achieve the effect that you didn't directly state?
(Also, those spoilers are more annoying than they are useful.)
Not everyone knows how to invert things with redstone, and it is much faster, cheaper, and more space efficient to have a block that can achive the same effect as inverting a daylight sensor.
I support this, so I can make lights that turn on in the night and off in the day. I never really saw why we had daylight sensors but not night sensors, because night sensors are much more useful.

People who don't know how to invert daylight sensors would probably also not use the moonlight sensor anyway.
Anyway, no support as the desired result can be archived already by an existing mechanic.

Ever had something (or somebody) on your railroad that you did not want there?

Are you serious? It takes 2 extra blocks to invert a daylight sensor and is one of the most basic, I repeat, most simplest forms of redstoning. Are you honestly that ignorant and lazy to learn?
It is also ironic, since you would most likely use inverters in your circuitry anyway.

What might be useful is a moonlight sensor whose output signal corresponds to the phase of the moon (that's what I was expecting to see in the request). Such a sensor could be nice to have for activating circuitry only once every lunar cycle.
Questions:
Does such a mod already exist?
If I make such a mod, then should it operate around the clock, or should its signal rise only at night (i.e. when the moon is up)?

I've done it I'll soon be uploading a moonlight (phase) sensor. It gives zero signal during the day and [moon-phase + constant] at night. It can be used to activate or pulse redstone circuitry infrequently (like once per 8-day lunar cycle). I'm not sure what would need that, but with hundreds of thousands of inventive players out there, I'm sure somebody will love it.
Question for everyone: Would it be better to emit a signal strength at the high end (8-15) or low end (1-8) of redstone power? In other words, should I punch up the underlying constant to push signal further when there's any signal at all?
Inverting a daylight sensor will not get you the phase of the moon...
Or were you replying to the OP without noticing the dozen other replies that mentioned the same thing? Yeah, we're past that now. Maybe I should start a new thread and let this one die a merciful death.

command block, yo
(But it wouldn't be available in SSP, without cheats, that's the flaw..)

wow
such fail
so redstone
just inverturr

Constantly evolving, reaching further heights.
