interesting but here's a problem. a human being can go without food for several weeks. ignoring the hydration, and mental problems (a human can only go 72 hours with water or some other means to stay hydrated and someone determined on surviving lasts longer then someone without the determination) hunger shouldn't be a major problem until at least the second weak. this not to say that there would not be drawbacks to not eating. some of these drawbacks would include moving slow, alerting mobs due to stomach growling (Attracts aggressive mobs and scares away passive/neutral mobs), not being able do as much damage as you normally would, etc. these conquenses grow in effect as time goes by without food. i have a chart to show the drawbacks and when they happen (Previous effects still remain unless a more advance for of a previous effect is induced)
The Chart
Day 1 - Light stomach growling (Five block radius)
Day 2 - Slightly increased growling (7 block radius)
Day 3 - Slightly slowed down (Movement speed 95%)
Day 4 - Increased growling (10 block radius), Minor decrease in movement speed (90%)
Day 6 - Medium growling (30 block radius), Low decrease in movement speed (80%)
Day 8 - Heavier growling (40 block radius), Decreased movement speed (75%), .5 Less damage done, Minor decrease in mining speed (95%)
Day 10 - 1.0 Less damage done, Decrease in mining speed (85%), Decrease in movement speed (70%)
Day 12 - Heavy Growling (50 block radius), 2.0 Less damage done,Heavier Decrease in mining speed (65%)
Day 13 - 2.5 Less damage done, Heavy decrease in movement speed (60%), Heavy decrease in mining speed (50%)
Day 16 - 4.0 Less damage done, Major decrease in movement speed (50%), Major decrease in mining speed (40%)
Day 19 - 5.0 less damage done (Make even diamond swords worthless in this state), Crippling decrease in mining speed (30%), Crippling decrease in movement speed (40%)
Day 20 - Rare passing out (1 in 1000 chance every 5 min.)
Day 24 - Occasional passing out (1 in 500 chance every 4 min.)
Day 27 - Common passing out (1 in 100 every 3 min.)
Day 29 - Almost constant passing out (1 in 50 every 3 min.)
Day 30 - Death (Vision fades slowly to black and when the screen is completely blacked out you get the death message)
Passing out
Passing out causes your vision to fade to black and make you lye on the ground 1 block high and 2 blocks across in the shape of a rectangle. Aggressive mobs can still attack you in this state. Being passed out causes 3 min. to pass by at x10 the normal speed and can cause you to fall if you not in a flat area away from the edges.
Filling hunger and detecting it
different foods fill different amounts of hunger as this chart will show
Raw pork = 2 days
Cooked pork = 2 days
Raw fish = 2 days
Apple = 3 days
Golden apple = 10 days (its rare)
Bread = 3 days
Cake (when added) = 5 days
You would still have the hunger indicator but the color of the indicator would start Green (completely full) and would slowly change color to red going through the colors in between. The skull hunger indicator would only appear on days 20 - 30.
That's about it, thank you for your time.
that makes hunger sound very complicated and sounds like it'll take months, even with notch's chuck norris-like software engineering capabilities
also, "passing out" could be very annoying, you cant do anything for 3 min? might not sound like a lot of time, but doing nothing for that long truly is
1. something being complicated does not mean that it is bad. complication just adds another challenge to the game. and this would still be able to be toggle on and off.
2. 3 min. would be passing at times ten the normal speed so you would only notice 18 sec. pass
3. its supposed to be semi-realilistic, on my point is that a human dies after WEEK of starvation. hell there a people who have lasted about weeks before dieing
the fact that it's complicated, is the fact that if that way is used, you would have to google the effects.
"hmm, what happeneds in 5 days google? (close minecraft, open chrome, search, ect)"
also. 18 seconds is still dumb. why would you wait 18 seconds in a game, you're just sitting there doing nothing when playing a game? i understand consequences. but waiting in a game shouldnt be one, unless you're being trolled

2. this is a suggestion. a suggestion is not always going to be kept exactly the same when its implemented. this suggestion could be completely changed and could just be the base for a better implementation. from what ive gathered quite a few people don't think or realize this
3. to be honest i cant think of any transition at all for passing out. and one of the upsides to it is that it give the mobs a chance to attack you while your passed out

Some guys said that in peaceful it shouldnt be in.I disagree!Eating is real thing, and peaceful is like sleeping and waking on an unknown place. It should be there on peaceful!
Yeah I agree with you, in fact I thought of this idea while playing in peaceful mode because I was making a farm, and realised it is useless in peaceful because you never get hurt. However, some people see peaceful as a mode void of any danger at all, and they like it that way. That's why it must be an option.

waiting in games, its just way too annoying. have you ever played metal gear solid? you know the part where you're in jailand you need to wait for the guy to break you out? i was screaming at the screen saying WHY WOULD IT MAKE YOU WAIT. i dont want minecraft to be like that too.
and you would have to memorize the hunger effects. that's too much information to just remember.
and that's the point i'm trying to make, i disagree with a majority of that suggestion, so i'm telling you what i disagree with. no reason to be defensive
So every ten minutes your hunger gets worse? So you essentially have to eat every ten minutes or eat a lot ever 30 - 40. You would no longer be playing to survive you would be doing nothing but hunting for food.

Thats why you set up a farm. You only need to eat 1 piece of food for each level, it's not hard at all to obtain that. Whether from a pig, farming, or fishing.

I can see where you're coming from. You're talking about a hunger mode focused on realism, correct?
Well, I mean no offense, but one of the main reasons that so many hunger suggestions have been disregarded is because the OP tried to make the idea too realistic, instead of fun. The result is a complicated, **** easy or extremely difficult idea that nobody wants.
Now understand where I'm coming from. When I devised my idea for hunger, I was thinking in terms of how easy it would be for the player to understand it, creating a balanced challenge that's not too easy or too difficult, and as little intrusion on the regular gameplay as possible (which is why I don't think hunger should affect the health bar, or slow the player/screw up the screen/make the player wait). The last thing I was thinking of is realism, because too much realism can just be tedious and unfun.
So that's why in Minecraft, hunger should kill you after 3 days.
I've edited the OP with a little note about the length of time it takes to die of starvation. The time I said in the OP isn't set in stone, and could even be changed depending on what difficulty you choose.
I say 7 days from completely full to dead. if you are in the top 2 levels you do everything 10% faster, and if you are in the bottom 2 levels you do everything 10% slower. 1 day cycle is 1 level lower, 1 food item is 1 level higher. Simple as that.

I once saw a chicken push a creeper off of a cliff. I never looked at chickens the same way ever again. That is of course until I needed feathers.
it sounds great, but i would like to see a more complex version of this. for example, bread isn't more satisfying than a pork steak is it?
how about a bar, instead of the icon, that goes as slow as your method does, but different foods effect the bar differently.
when the hunger "bar" is absolutely full, it will show as blue, and no matter what food was eaten to make the bar blue, you will stay full for 20 min. When you are full you feel the health and energy running though your veins, and are more energetic, opposite to the starvation nerf, all destruction of blocks is 25% faster, including digging and cutting wood. your hits to mobs is also 25% more powerful. (a possible 25% increase to walking speed?) this will encourage keeping hunger mode on.
= full
After the 20 min, the bar slowly starts to drop, one quarter of the total bar per 20 min. the bar will show as green, no buffs, or nerfs will happen to your character.
[]
= a bit hungry
As the bar goes down, you get more hungry, and still no buffs or nerfs will happen.
[]
[]
= hungry
As you get to starvation mode, you begin to feel weak, that's because you are. all destruction of blocks, mining, digging everything is slowed by 25%. Also, damage to other mobs is decreased be 25%, (maybe even movement speed?)
[]
[] = starvation mode
[]
When the bar is completely empty you die. simple as that.
the total process from completely full to death is 5 minecraft days.
i also mentioned different foods effect your hunger differently depending on the type of food. its easy to figure that out. for every 4 hearts the food heals, one quarter of the bar is replenished. that means pork steaks replenishes 1 quarter of the bar, bread replenishes a bit more than 2/8 of he bar, so does raw pork, ect
the hunger mode can be turned on and off, however no matter what, when you turn it from off to on you are moderately hungry (bar is half empty).
i believe a bar, instead of an icon is more accurate, and the replenishment is more realistic.
in this, you don't die in 2 days, 5 days in total, but it's still short enough to add a small challenge to the game, and make those unlimited mining trips shorter, or make you have to pack a lunch
I say 7 days from completely full to dead. if you are in the top 2 levels you do everything 10% faster, and if you are in the bottom 2 levels you do everything 10% slower. 1 day cycle is 1 level lower, 1 food item is 1 level higher. Simple as that.
I really like this. It's simple and easy to understand, which is important!
i like a lot the idea, as you said, it a survival game!, and you implement the hunger mod really nice... the only thing left to add after would be some liquor like beer! (made of grain of course!) to share it with friends in SMP lol
the fact that it's complicated, is the fact that if that way is used, you would have to google the effects.

Perhaps when you are in the red you become weaker. You take 1.5 times as long to break down/mine/chop blocks. Or something of that nature.

Although you made great points, I hate the fact that you die of starvation in two days. I mean, come on. It seems STILL too much like a hassle to me.
Yet hunger still must be a mild challenge, so if you say three days, it will seem less like a hassle.
It'd be easy to do, and yet it would still have it's moments where your stuck in the middle of mining and your screwed.
