I know there is a tool out there which will map your Minecraft world for you. But it feels like that kind of ruins the expansiveness of the world. I'd love to be able to actively explore my world and map it myself.
And I don't mean I walk around and suddenly I have a map. (That would be auto-mapping, as in the poll above)
Now I am not entirely sure how this might be accomplished, but here are just some thoughts on how it might be done.
Details
First off, you would need to make a canvas. This would likely be crafted using just a full 3x3 grid of wool. Alternatively paper could be used.*
Next take it with you, out into the wilds, and take a look around. Then switch to your canvas and right-click.
This would open up some kind of dialog where you could create a basic map, nothing complex. Like everything, it would probably be blocky. Perhaps a 20x20 grid, which would allow you in each square to place a water, sand, snow, or grass block. And perhaps some way to indicate that this area is a hill, that area is frozen over with ice, this region is a mountain etc. Obviously you could make the map as detailed or vague as you like and still maintain a fairly useful image.
Perhaps then you could store these in Library blocks even. It would also be cool if you could put names for the locations on the maps, but that might be a bit much.
Additional Possibilities
I posted this idea primarily as an aid for exploration, however the maps could potentially also be placed on walls or tables, either along or alongside other maps to form larger area maps.*
It could also easily be used for creating paintings if people are so inclined.*
Seems somewhat unlikely that such a feature will be added, but I'll make the suggestion anyways. :smile.gif:
Perhaps the map would indicate your current position at all times and would scroll with you as you walk. To make the map, you would have tools at your disposal, such as a pencil, line, and fill tool to draw out the map. A text tool would generate text where placed. Maps could also be placed on walls in a similar way to signs. In SMP, maps would be stored client-side until the player places the map on a wall, at which point the map would upload to the server. Another player could then find the map and copy it to their own. In the server settings, you can choose to upload an image as the blank map, keeping tools like Cartograph in use. If the player exceeds the dimensions of the image, the image would not tile or stretch, allowing there to be uncharted space.

I think it would be more interesting and fun, if you had to do it yourself. That way it is prone to human error.
Though yes that could be a possibility, though personally I would prefer no map, to that kind of map.
This is exactly what I don't want.
I love the idea of being able to map out the world yourself though.

Also added a poll. Since they are a convenient way to sum up people's thoughts on the matter.

Something like that would be implemented in essentially the same way, so yeah that could work.
