Stop crippling the game every so often trying to code some fancy nonsensical floating leaf decay, and instead simply make leaves that do not have a wood block within 3 squares (the spread distance of fire) simply vanish in a puff...immediately. This allows people to make and keep treehouses AND allows them to chop down trees efficiently.
And this will also free you up to break the game in new and more interesting ways.
I agree as well. There must be some easier way to instantly remove the leaves. I like the idea of leaves just vanishing whenever there is no wood nearby to sustain it, instead of leaf blocks disappearing over time.
How does this let people KEEP tree houses anymore than the existing type?
turning trees into falling entities is a terrible solution at this point. It fundamentally changes the manner in which this game currently operates, and is a thing that would break many ways in which people have used trees and leaf blocks as objects for creative construction.
but a lot of people, probably in the tens of thousands actually, have used floating leaf blocks in different ways than intended, such as bushes or decorative parts. They also use them as floors and walls in tree houses. If a leaf block could stay where it was if there is a wood block near by it, much like redstone wires being activated, then it would allow people to purposefully keep leaves where they want to keep them. And it wouldn't involve complicated coding that breaks the game entirely.
but it would also make it really easy to chop down those random trees you don't want around and have their leaves instantly disappear. floating disconnected leaf blocks would not occur naturally because that is not how the game generates trees. If you see any floating leaves you don't want because you have been chopping away at other nearby leaves, either you are doing it on purpose (which is a good thing as stated above) you can get rid of them the old fashioned way, or you can simply find the very nearby wood that is keeping them alive - a pretty unf*ckwithable solution
Or Notch could implement branches that have leaves growing off of them simply getting rid of the problem of floating leaves. Also when you break the block of wood that the branches are on the branches break.
Branches sometimes drop:
Logs still drop:
Leaves sometimes drop:
If sticks become to common with this method Notch could simply make them craft less when using wood.
I don't think that the problem isn't that we didn't read the first post, it's that we DO NOT UNDERSTAND IT!
The way you typed it is very confusing. Can you try retyping it? It seems that the way you are suggesting is ot make leaves instantly dissappear if they are more than 3 blocks away from a log, correct?
Well, the way it works now, from what I can tell, is that each leaf begins to disappear if it is not "rooted" to a log block somehow. If it is not connected to a log block in some way, it begins to deteriorate until it is completely destroyed. This method helps.
Oh, and about what you said about "trees as entities breaking the game", what is your reasoning behind that? How would trees actually falling after they are disconnected from the ground break the game? It would make trees ACTUALLY fall like a real tree, and there wouldn't be ANY floating leaf blocks, because they would have fallen over onto the ground.
If you're talking about leaf decay you're an idiot. Notch has rewritten it 17 times.
On topic: I think this method makes a whole lot more sense than Notch's magic staggered decaying leaves, since leaves don't just hang around in the air and then pop, they're gone, one by one, they all fall with the trunk.

Zombie pigmen will organize into well-coordinated search and destroy teams with weapons open, and creepers will develop the ability to determine certain eigenvalues of the voxel-based matrix that is the minecraft world.
I have to agree with the option of chosing wether or not we want leaf decay. Like the choice of peaceful mode, it gives us a chance to collect wood and do things without the lag for the not so top of the line pcs. I also like the option of the leaves just disappearing after the wood is harvested but this would make getting the saplings harder unless they just appeared on the ground and that would make getting them to easy.
Wouldn't this prevent me from having leaf blocks in the front of my house as hedges? Unless I made my house out of logs...
make sure you've read and at least attempted to understand the OP before replying to topics yeesh
I did, and the way I read it, it came off as "If there's no log block within three blocks of a leaf block, the leaf vanishes." Of course, as replied to me, the simple solution is putting a log underneath your hedge. That's why I never made a new reply, my question was answered.
Make sure you're not an asshole and at least attempt to be intelligent before replying to someone.
